Dear members of this community!I just want to get something off me, which is troubling me a bit. There is this post about Kenya. In it, CalR states, that everybody who is only here for taking, is a troll.I haven't contributed anything yet. Am I a troll??? Well, I invite and encourage you to answer this one, but let me also share with you my own point of view! You think I am a troll? In this case, let me tell you, that IMO, supporting the community, answering questions, buying lots of payware addons and so on, is also a form of contributing. I neither have the patience, the abilities nor the time to get myself down to use a 3D design program to built locos, routes or else. From time to time I am working on activities, which will be eventually finished. But again, time is money and I have to earn it.I never caused flame wars, yet I have my opinions and stick to them. If I say something wrong, you can burn me, but I will stick to it and take the consequences. My screen name "sstyrnol" is my only screenname here and I have it since I signed in after I got train-sim. I am a charter member, which speaks for it self.I do not attack other members unless they are pi$$ing me off. I have my opinions of the stuff provided by this community and would like everybody to bear with reasonable constructive criticism.Cal, I understand your opinion, but I just have to clarify, that I do not fall into this category. Now, tell me, what you think!Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

To me, a troll is someone here on the forums who posts to cause flame wars, ONLY posts off-topic stuff, and refuses to help themselves.Take Kenya for example. He has in the past asked reasonable questions, but we can't ever understand what she's trying to say because she doesn't structure her words right. We've told her to get a spell check, but she always wants to say "I can't help it", and refuses to help herself.BCDEF, is also a troll, because he will post things in the forums that many people will find offensive, for the purpose of causing a flame war. Now, there are several trolls here on the forums, most of them are the kids here who don't know how to act in public (even in a public forum). If you want something, don't go around demanding that somebody make it for you. Try doing it yourself. If you completely fail, THEN you might could post that it WOULD BE NICE if someone made it, you just might want the same thing that a skinner here also wants. When you make a post, use proper english and sentence structure! I realize that there are people here from all around the world, but this forum is predominantly english, so if you can't learn to type in english and form proper sentences, go to another forum that is in your language. My $0.02

I think, the major problem with some people here is that they do not think! They just post away, like they would be chatting away.People posting here (I said that before!), should be aware, that in a written medium, words have a very different impact!

You see every typo, grammar error and lack of punctuation etc...
You tend to realise the words written down much more intense, hence you think more about what you are reading than what you are hearing.
You don't see the other's faces, hence you don't see there mimics, hence you don't see (or hear) whether what they said was meant to be true, ironic, humouristic, sardonic, etc.
You have time to think about what you answer, hence there is the tendency to overreact to a given phrase.

Given this, people should keep this in mind, when they are posting. Now, the next problem is, that there are people of different ages here. AFAIK, the range goes from as young as twelve to as old as 70 (???). Obviously, the way of communicating is very different. It comes to my knowledge, that the ability of proper writing has been lost during the last 10 years. Although the whole way of thinking has changed. And here comes what is called tolerance, ignorance and willingness to learn.Tolerance is needed, because both the youngsters and the grown-ups here act so differently. I don't mean to tolerate everything, just the right bit
Ignorance: Just ignore those buggers, when they post superfluous stuff!
Willingness to learn: It is possible to work on your spelling. It is also possible to learn what is okay and what not. It is possible to learn how to express clearly, what you want to say. I think, this is a great possibility especially for the younger ones here to learn this, as everybody here is more likely to accept and tolerate than others like in a job interview. If someone asks somebody to improve his spelling: What's the big deal about it. For sure it is only meant helpful. So, in a nutshell, Operation "Lifesaver" states: Look, Listen, Live, these forum states Operation "Flameproof": Read, Think, Type (in that order, not reverse!)If we all accept, what is the standard in good human behaviour, there should be no problem, should there? Just post in a way, you want to be treated yourself. If you want to be flamed, okay, post something flamey! If you want the others to talk to you like an adult, talk like an adult yourself!Alright, that's already enough $$$ for am MSTS addon!P.S.: It took me two years to reach a postcount as high as Kenya's after two months. Quality vs. Quantity!

My perception of a Troll is the non-enthusiast who probably behaves in a similar way on a number of boards, has no interest in contributing in any constructive way (either by offering their files to share, or by posting in any thoughtful manner) and generally behaves in a malevolent fashion....On that basis You are most certainly not a troll...RegardsReg'I don't post much but I do read a lot...'

I agree with you 100%. I think you misunderstood my comment. I didn't mean the taking and not giving referred only to items in the library. Sure I have contributed a few things to the library but I have contributed a lot more in other ways. Both are forms of giving. My reference to trolls was those people who download everything they can fit on their computer without a clue as to how to make these items work. Then they flood the forums with "how do I get this widget to work on that track?", etc. They are also the ones constantly asking for handouts. There are many people here who do a lot of downloading but who also give back to the forums in their own way. I find this perfectly acceptable. Just being a friend in the forums is a form of giving.I just get so tired of the people (mostly young people) who expect everything to be handed to them on a silver platter and are not willing to try to figure a few things out for themselves. No offense was meant to you or anyone else in the forums (two possible exceptions). I have been around here almost since train-sim.com went "on the air." I was a member before the forum update made all current members at that time, charter members. I have seen a lot of good people leave or relocate to other venues because of the "trolls". There is another train simulator website that is struggling to gain a foothold. It has a good selection of forums but the membership is low. One difference between that site and this one--no trolls. They won't allow it. They keep tight control on that kind of posting. They also have a good "fire department!" No flame wars.I hope I have made my position clear. If you would like to continue this discussion here or via private message or email, that is fine.Cal Rasmussen

RE: Being a troll...

Sanely put Sir;I observe a great deal (but post rarely) and have made occasional self-made offerings available for various programs, and in the main the mods here are quite forgiving; I am sure that some of the folk perceived as Trolls here would not last very long at all on some of the beta fora; a lifespan shorter than a mayfly and a banning being meted out to those who transgress certain rules; by comparison these fora are very relaxed and even some of the crasser questions get thoughtful intelligent answers!RegardsReg (back to my silent inscrutable self)

RE: Being a troll...

I would like to pick up on one of Sebatian's comments. Sebastian commented on the need for tolerance here. I've felt the same way for some time - especially with regard to the younger members of this forum. As Sebastian pointed out young people behave a bit differently from old people (this is hardly new - complaints about the way youngsters behave can be found in the records of most civilizations for about as far back as written records go). While there have been some postings from some of our young members which have not been as responsible as we might wish, the reaction of some of the oldsters here as been somewhat lacking in tolerance. I think it would be quite appropriate to remind ourselves that we were all young once, just as we were computer novices at one time and none of us were born as railway or train simulator experts - we all had to learn everything we now know from scratch.Just because some behaves or writes in a way which is different from what we like doesn't make them idiots, irresponsible, etc. There is a difference between deliberately trying to stir up trouble (which is what I take a troll to be) and simply not writing with the maturity of and elder. I'm one old geezer who isn't offended by the presence of young people behaving like young people. CheersJohn

Thank you for your answer. I think I would like to close this discussion for now.Cal, I did not misunderstand your statement, I just felt, others might do. However it became obvious, that something is needed round here.It is that we "charter members" (by means of time spent here) should stick together more. If we act a little bit more like a team and observe whats going on, there should be little less problems. And of course, if we learn to just ignore those trolls by not responding to them and just inform the moderators, well...???I hope, that this forum will stay as good as it used to be and that the trolls will eventually loose their interest. That's it then!Cheers!SebastianFeel free to IM me on: sstyrnol@hotmail.com

I'll start using google before I post all of my junk here again. Will I still be a troll after that?
