"Downtown you'd probably want to visit Grand Central Station though."Nels, Grand Central is a Terminal, not a station!

If you go to Grand Central Terminal, make sure to be friendly to the employees. When I went to NY on vacation, I was lucky enough to befriend one of the guys that works there, and he showed me where Roosevelt's secret tunnels used to be. Grand Central Terminal is the place to go if you're going railfanning in NY.mrWM734Anouncement – image 7

mrWM734, do you have an idea of who you talked to? Is he a Token Booth Clerk, motorman, signal maintainer, or what?

He was one of the men that kept Grand Central running properly. I think he might have been a supervisor or something like that. He told me all about how Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onasis had the place fixed up to better than new condition.mrWM734Anouncement – image 10

Grand Central Station is Midtown and Jackie O had nothing to do with renovating the place. It is in much better condition now. Around the holidays they have model train layouts there.

Ride the subway! It's the most rapid subway system in N. America! (Occaisionally you might hear something on the PA about congestion ahead.) If possible, ride the (7) Train! No, not the stainless-steel ones, the red ones! The locals here call them Redbirds. Riding one will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience! They are currently being scrapped or dumped into the Delaware Harbor (for an artificial reef). 7 train starts in Times Square 42nd St. and ends in Flushing Main-St. Pick up a map from one of the Token Booths. That'll be an important piece of navigation. Don't pay attention to the movies you see about our subway. The Graffiti-covered trains are gone and it is a fairly safe subway. Don't act like you're from out-of-town!EDIT: $2.00 for a ride! We here slide a MetroCard through the turnstyles. The token was recently retired. Get a One-Day Fun-Pass! Those give you unlimited access for a day in the subway. Convenient vending machines for MetroCards in most stations.

Visit The sunnyside yards. Also, pay a visit to the NYC transit museum anex at GCT, it is in the shuttle passage. Also, take a Path from 33rd and Bradway to hoboken and take the Light rail in Jersey, A nice and pleasant trip(the light rail is)!-NHtrainAnouncement – image 17 Anouncement – image 18

Today while I was riding the (7) Train, there was a yard with Amtrak and a bit of NJ Transit equipment between 45 Rd. Courthouse Sq. and Hunterspoint Ave. stations, could anyone identify this yard? Also, I frequently see a cut of freight cars on a spur, also between 45 Rd. Courthouse and Hunterspoint stations, just before you enter or after you leave the tunnel. Does anyone know who these tracks belong to? Trying to identify a couple railfanning spots!EDIT: Also, a yard that had rusting rails and had a cut of what I could only identify as a cut of rusting ore cars (you try identifying railroad cars from a moving subway train through a throughly vandalized window!) somewhere south (?) of the Flushing River. It is now a field with patches of ground that were once railroad tracks. Does anyone know who this yard belonged to? (Interborough to the Rescue!)
