Was looking at CNN the other day and I noticed that it said that the feds had a teen arrested for causing the MSBlast.exe/Lovsan worm. I
was kinda surprised when I saw it. But they had him in custody. They tracked him to a site that he has and had the code for the worm on the site.

Yes,he left his "handle" on his modified code.Considering the cost of lost computer time $1B,and rising, plus the extra expense of anti virus software, loss of HDD space, illegal stealing of your computer processor for their use,it's time that such "jokers" are treated with the same severity as terrorists, because that's what they are, economic terrorists. There's yet to be a firm denial that such worms didn't contribute to the recent grid failure either.

Shawn, I agree 100% with you. The person who originally wrote the code should be the one punished. This kid only added a few things.

I hope he gets the full 10 years and the $250,000 fine. It's only adding a few things to his life. He's not a kid, soon he will be a convicted felon of a extremly serious crime.I can see a new novel defense, "I didn't make the gun, I just used it so I shouldn't be held responsible."

Just think how many incompetent administrators lost there job due to an exploit being uncovered? I say we leave stupidity and incompetence running the internet, and we got what we deserved, The wake up call has been made, but how many people will just shrug it off and let it happen again?

I'm not saying he shouldn't be punished, I'm saying he don't deserve any credit for it, anyone can modify somebody's something, But on a personal note, This guy will probably land a job with the CIA though, working as a white hat hacker

Agreed 100%, It's about time we stop with the "Oh ain't that cute" attitude with these morons,If one disrupts computer systems worldwide in the name of Allah they can expect an airstrike or in the very least a squad of Marines intent on serious bodily harm, Do the exact same thing just because you can or because you've got it out Bill Gates and some people want to go soft on them.(IIRC I thought I heard this guy was from Seattle if so I would not be terribly surprised that this clown would have been found front row at these anti capitalisim marches)
As far as I'm concerned this little twit should get the maximum jail time and be held liable in civil court for monetary damages he caused, I know he most likely doesn't have squat in the way of assets but I'd be happy with this numbskull living in a cardboard box for the rest of his years.
Now in the case of the bozo who came up with Sobig since he intends for his little toy to turn all our systems into spam servers for his own gain,I'm torn between medievil torture devices or just one bullet to the back of the head and then billing the next of kin for the cost of the bullet.(boy! can't you just tell how I feel about spammers?)Gary S

No wonder middle eastern people don't want to live in the US anymore, cause of people with this kind of attitude.

Sadly this loser was a home grown "christian" from the woods of Minnesota I beleive.....
And little he ain't, the local news had him at 6'4" and 315lbs....
That's big enough to scare Shep AND I! LOL!I too think they should hang him or at least send him to sleep with Bubba and the Neo-Nazis at the local "correctional institution" for a while... BNSF
I am no racist!Did I say Arabs? My response was to Larkies post refering to terrorists.
I used Islamic extremists in my example due to the fact that that it happens to be the majority of terrorist acts have been carried out by extremists acting under color of the Islamic faith.
for example
Unabomber : homegrown nutbar
First attempt on WTC : Islamic extremists
Kobar Towers : Islamic extremists
Bali : Islamic extremists
USS Cole : Islamic extermists
US embassies(sp?) Africa : Islamic extermists
Federal Building Oklahoma City :homegrown US nut case.
Pentagon/WTC/intended target unknown,9/11/01 : Islamic extremists
shoe bomber: Islamic extremist
I think there's a bit of a pattern there,I've just listed 9 terrorist events over the last 10 or so years 2 were home grown nutcases,if you were to ask those involved in the other seven why they did what they did, don't you think striking the infidels in Ahllah's name would be right up there?
No Muslim does not equal terrorist, nor did I state that it did but one should not be so blinded by political correctness as not to see that there is a small but extremely bloodthirsty percentage of that faith that presents a danger not only to the non Muslim world but as proved by the bombing of the mosque in Baghdad just the other day,to those of the Islamic faith that this small percentage deems not quite faithful enoughGary S

>I think there's a bit of a pattern there,I've just listed 9
>terrorist events over the last 10 or so years 2 were home
>grown nutcases
But the two home-grown cases weren't terrorists?
You could have added quite a few more to the list of homegrown terrorists, and if you start adding in those from other western nations then the list would look more equal.e.g. The guy who is under arrest in the U.S. for shooting at doctors who perform a surgical procedure he doesn't like (abortion) and is also wanted in Canada for a similar murder.I.R.A & U.D.FThose were just a few examples, there are plenty more.

The same (or similar remarks) can be said of "Christian" extremists, or Hindu, Sikh, etc, exremists. It's not just Islam which produces violent radical, all religions and non-religions produce them. Problem is that the news coverage of late has tended to gloss over the others. If the violent nutters happen to be nominally Christian, the there is never any mention made of their religious background, while if the happen to be Moslems, or Sikhs, then that is always mentioned - whether or not it's relavent to the news story in question.

RE: Blaster Attack Caused By Teen.

John
I posted that response fairly late in the day and was having trouble drawing examples from the ol MK1a1 noggin.
By no means were the two homegrown nutters being excused, a terrorist is a terrorist and should be dealt with in the way one deals with a mad dog.
I intentionally avoided the lone nutbar that shoots a single abortion doctor(though they should still be dealt with in the same manner)to focus on those with a larger body count.
It also seems that in general a good deal of the other incidents you've mentioned revolve also around long seated cultural/ tribal dissputes in addition to religious disputes.
You've made some very good points my response was more intended towards those who jump to the kneejerk reaction of crying racist everytime they're confronted with an ugly truth.
This next comment is not aimed at you, I just wish to make where I stand crystal clear.
I do not dislike anyone due to their race, religion,or what part of the world they live(though I still now and then like to poke a bit of good natured fun as I do with myself),I try my absolute best to try to use phrases that do not paint with a broad brush,I do however, have a problem with groups, countries, and such, that through their actions have threatened the lives of myself,my countymen and anyone else in this world who will not bend a knee to tyrants.
Finally in the context of the post that set this off,I was attempting to use a more dynamic approach rather than the dry "If terrorists"
I had assumed that most reading that post would have picked up on context of a virus attack by a hacker being compared to a similar disruption caused by terrorists and since (1) Muslim extremists of late have been the most active and (2) since groups such as Al Queda are working their mayhem in name of Allah, that they would put 2+2 together.Gary S

Well seeing how that what this individual had done by modifying an existing code, it would seem that the powers to be at Microsoft with all thier collective resources should have been more on the ball to patch up the existing security hole. I mean it's not like this went unnoticed before????, or maybe it got past them the first time around. I dunno, If I were a software engineer at Microsoft involved with writing the codes that go into the operating system I'd be rather ashamed that an 18 year old would show me up! In all reality I have to wonder with all the bugs in the various operating systems, and one must admit there are quite a few, just what do all those high profile software developers at Microsoft really do? Write the codes to just get by with, enough to make the big bucks for Bill and forego the integrity of the product for profit to time to develop constraints?, Kind of makes one wonder. As far a punishment goes what can an adequate punishment be for a minor? All I can say is in my day of that age there'd be a serious come to Jesus meeting out back of the woodshed! Oh how the times have changed. This is going to happen again, and it will in one form or another, thus proving the benifits of doing regular backup's, at least once a month of files on your computer especially where a project in the works is concerned. Thats about the best we all can do from our end. John

As far as I'm concerned these guys are vandals - plain pure vandals, and as guilty as any other criminal who cause wanton damage. I don't care whether this teen just fiddled and tweaked or added extra code, he must have known that what he was attempting to do was wrong. No excuses. Anyone involved with computers knows what viruses do. In my book this teenager is just as guilty as the a$$hole who wrote the virus in the first place, because he knowingly applied the code. As far as this giving ol uncle Bill a wakeup call,I don't think so until the day comes that Bill has to do his own updating/virus fixing of his own comp,as long as he can have one of the MS IT boys stop in and do the work we'll all be paying for the honor of beta testing the latest MS product.Gary S

Subic, especially before they paved the roads and made Carmen's get rid of the croc (ca 1968), was a truely amazing place. I have been asked several times over the years to describe it (especially since "The Flight of the Intruder" movie) and find that it cannot be done. It is totally unlike anything else I have ever seen or even heard tell of, but its relationship to the state of the net seems clear to me.Brad Meyer

In responce to your responce to my point of view on things, well lets say I do have all my ducks in a row on my end, and I have done a good deal of research on the lower end O/S's of microsoft, A yes quite frankly the product is quite shoddy in some respects. Pretty tough to choose an alternative O/S when the vast majority of applications are written for the primary system in use through out the world today, believe me I'd use a alternative if there was one comprarable. And I have one more point to make, If one pays for a product, in this case the MS O/S, then that product should thus recieve attention to the integrity and maintaing that which should go with the product.

And I'll point blank tell you Brad that there are known issues with some of the Msoft O/S's that have never been patched despite of consumer complaints to Microsoft, and I see absolutly no viability in your defence of Microsoft! John

RE: Blaster Attack Caused By Teen.

Good point,
Have you ever driven behind a 11/2 yr old Cadillac driven by a blue haired widow, with smoke belching from the exhaust? I am sure she thinks that since she only drives it to the store 1/4 mile twice a week, the oil changes aren't necessary, but the drivers following her would surely disagree!
I am not defending the little twerp (OK he may weigh 365 pounds, but he does nontheless have little good judgement or maturity), but who of us did make really good judgements all the time as a 14-15 year old? I do think the punishment ought to be severe (and maybe the parents should be held somewhat acountable for failure to supervise adequately), but I am also not sure sending a kid to prison for a long time is doing anybody any favors. First of all, you would be training a very bright criminal in the process. Second, he will be ill equiped once out, to do anything else with his life other than more criminal action. At that age, maybe a LOT of community service and a very harsh fine would be the better choice, along with very strict court supervision until he is an adult??

Certainly, but I also take responsibility for my opwn actions and decisions instead of trying to off load it on the dealer, or manufacturer, or anyone else. That sort of complaining is nothing more then whining ("You want some cheese to go with that whine?") which I find annoying in children and pathetic in anyone claiming to be an adult. There have been many threads on these boards about the "proper" settings for any number of engine/wagon variables in MSTS -- length, mass, bounding box, pivot point, Ro, etc., etc., etc. I maintain that in the end, the condition of my trainset is my responsibility and no one else's. Not the modeler or the skinner, or the operator of the download site, or the author of the 4.5 physics, or anyone else. Mine alone. The same is true of my computer. Its condition and proper function is my responsibility, not Bill Gates', nor Peter Norton's, nor the ISP's, nor anyone else's. Mine. > Some people just dont get it, Indeed. The only real question is just which people those are.

No Brad, I don't go for that cheese and whine crap, I settle myself with beer and sausage, and if it's one thing I cant stand it's a whiner complaining about a whiner. I do not know where your high horse got it's start from. My origional message in this post did not attack anyone much less you, just states a basic simple fact of how buisness seems to operate these days with it's less than adequate integrity. So you seem to target me, it appears you cant handle someone elses opinion, and if there's any truth to that which it also appears to be, then you ought not to be here if it annoys you as you as much as you let on! So if you want to make a major case of it take it to the mod's John

I do not dispute this, I only say it is immaterial.>So you seem to target me . . .No, I target the point you are trying to make because I respectfully disagree with it, but I can see how, if you are the sort of person who will not accept responsibility for your actions, you would see yourself, rather then your position, as the point of attack. > . . . it appears you

My position is that people how don't take responibility for their actions get little sympathy from me when they complain of the results of those actions. A corolary to the position is that complaining under such circumstances is whinning. So far as I can tell, everyone who spread the bolld of current updates on the lintel of their OS had the worm pass over them. Whether or not the rest got what they deserved, the fact remains they got what they got and could have avoided it by doing what they ought. (Assuming, of course, that they bought into the proposition that the condition of their systems is their responsibility. Otherwise, it should read "doing what they could easily have done".)> So if you want to make a major case of it take it to the
>mod's For what purpose? To tell them your views are different then mine? Anyone can read the thread and find that out. To tell them you shouldn't be allowed to post your views because I disagree with them? No, you have as much right to post your views as I do to opine they are mistaken. To complain of being picked on? No, I take full responsibility for the content of my posts and the consequences of my posting them. If I wasn't prepared to defend them myself I wouldn't have posted them in the first place.Brad Meyer

RE: Blaster Attack Caused By Teen.

Brad, lets not even go the route of responcibility, after 15+ years in the USAF I can safely say I burdened more than my fair share of it. You are entitled to your opinion as I am mine, but if you want to enter the realm of what one possesses in thier own maintenence of personal responcibility that sir you are not qualified to do so, Unless you know what someones real background is. Now you seem to attack now my position within my sence of responcibility, and for that you are being a complete ASS. You dont even know a fraction of my personality much less how I conduct my life. As far as what I have to show for my personal integrity, for the record I have amassed numerous decorations and awards throughout my military career which includes Master ICBM Technician. So don't even enter my personal record. Oh and by the way I'm sure you as well as I have made many sacracifices due to the incompetence of others and I can understand your mindset,I on the otherhand choose to handle it in a different manner than you. So to set the record straight, I have nothing personal against you, what I do have against you is the way you attack someone without knowing even a fraction about who they really are. And one other thing, throughout my military carreer I have been viewed by many others with enough respect for my sence of responcibility that many have said they would fully trust me with thier life!

So if you want to continue this on the personal level you are going to have to go it alone because I'll prove to be the better man and let this whole thing go. John
