It is advisable NOT to post that you saw such "main" train as they were called in WWII, much less even post photos of them. The US Government (the DODX cars - Department of Defense) frowns upon such info.

Americans are so scared of their government it is sad. I dont think it is to much of a secret if you can see it on the train lineup and watch it travel by. They were probably going to suffield or somewhere to do a exercise for the week or something.rob20

RE: ARMY TRAIN

Yep, Wainright, Alberta, Canada is their location. And pictures are up now!And Rob20, yeah good point! If they train oes right through this small town with a railfan, and he flashes pictures...big deal (fly them over then)And, i am on public property.... I mean, if you do hijack this train, are you really going to get far with a tank??? Think about it?They probaby would send a plane after you and shoot you down faster then you can get on top of the railcar So ya, ChrisChris WilsonMP 63 CP's Heron Bay Sub

Chris, the problem is that the bad guys now know where those troops are located, and where they AREN'T located. Imagine being able to track troop movements by watching railfan sites.Yes, you have the right to photograph and publish those photos. Do really want to help the bad guys do their job?I'm sure they're good photos. Couldn't you just hold them for a couple of weeks, please?

There may very well be....
Or not...
No telling how much "co-operation" the Canadian DND is allowed to give the UK troops given the current position of the Government in Ottawa??????FWIW a C-5 or C-17 can only carry a small fraction of the payload of a train and at a significantly higher cost.BTW, We have a grip! you do not!

Every single spring, and I mean every single spring this happens. It is general public knowledge that the British conduct training every summer in Canada. If "the bad guys" wanted to find out about it, going to a railfan site would be too much effort, there are easier ways to find out.Stop being so paranoid, these movements have nothing to do with the war, and they have being going on like this for years now. Anyone who cares would already know before a railfan posted pictures. - Andrew

>rail-fan posted pictures. Andrew my son, I beg to differ with you on this.... {Whisper aside: You realize your post and several others here comes close to violating our agreement don't you? So I will respond 1 time only.}
I understand that you personally may not approve of this war, but even if they are British Troops or other Commonwealth Troops who are engaging in a war, under orders of their duly chosen legal governments they are deserving of our support and protection Eh?
The alternative is the moral equivalent of traveling to Baghdad and volunteering for duty with the Fedayeen Saddam IMO!
Now having gored your ox let me explain myself....The terrorists or any terrorists or other irregular forces for that matter don't care whether or not they are "Main Combatants" or merely on an exercise. Speaking for myself as a retired officer with some experience being on the receiving end of this "stuff", if I was the "enemy commander" I would think troops on a training exercise were the perfect target. No bullets only exercise ammunition or mostly exercise ammunition, lower state of readiness because they are far from the conflict, in a neutral country, (That that country as a matter of policy is opposed to the war is a lesser known fact) On a fixed schedule and down a fixed predictable path! Yum! Yum! Eat them up.... Almost as sporting as shooting fish in a barrel, with a hand grenade! Of course everyone knows that the UK and Commonwealth forces conduct training in that area and about that time. And you are correct any idiot can find that out. Especially if he talks to a Canadian such as yourself who doesn't understand the need for operational security. What he doesn't know is Where and When those targets are moving thru the area. The Train Symbols would be useful in that he could listen on a scanner and attack only that specific train and not waste his efforts on Potatoes or Wheat or Soybeans or Garbage! Or pacifists on their way to Montreal to demonstrate? <VBSEG>It costs us nothing to refrain from posting this kind of stuff for the duration of hostilities and there is the chance, no matter how remote, that withholding the train spotting data on military trains in the US, UK, Canada, Spain, and Australia will make the terrorists job more difficult. Now I am all for making their job more difficult, aren't you? After all innocent Canadians, maybe even a train spotter or two, could be in the area and killed or injured if anything goes wrong!FWIW, If I was the "said Irregular commander" I'd already be in Canada and have Canadian access to the web. I'd be looking for just such a target which would have political and propaganda value all out of proportion to its actual military value if any. If you want to call me paranoid then feel free to do so. However I have never felt the desire to make "Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic" my life's work. We can insist on our individual rights all we want. But we have to temper that with some discretion concerning the common good, or in this case the good of "our" troops. You do agree with that don't you? Here in the states we have a saying that the Constitution is not a Suicide Pact. After, all how would you feel if Commonwealth Troops got hurt or killed because you insisted on your "god given right" to report military train movements in an open forum and f*ck all the costs to the troops involved if the wrong guys key on the information you provide?
For me it would be easier on my Soul/Conscience if I didn't say anything for now.I suggested before and I make this suggestion again.
That Military movements of any kind by any of the combatants, Including the Iraqis (though I think the Mukhabarat has all 3 of the Iraqi train fans with access to the internet in jail by now) by any mode be it Train, Plane, Goat Cart, Foot, Rickshaw or Mule be prohibited as a topic of posts until the hostilities cease. Not a sermon or a political argument just some common sense.I'll go back to sleep now.

Those soldiers who defend your freedom along with ours and that of the UK have the right not to have their movements broadcast to the world and "Possibly" putting them at risk. Especially since the request has been made on many forums not to post those kind of pictures and more importantly dates and consists until after the hostilities...
Note I didn't say you couldn't do it...
I just said that the request was made to hold it in abeyance until after the hostilities...
IN point of fact those pictures were probably OK as long as he didn't attach a date/time - direction of travel - consist make up to them. All of which he did. Also note he gave an analyst the ability to estimate the security by noting the number and make up of "armed" cabeese.

And were completely off point! In fact the only operative thing you should have remembered before you and your friends jumped in was that the Forum Moderator requested that no posts like this be made at this time! Period.
If you and friends don't like those rules you are obviously free to go elsewhere.
I and my friends are staying.
The moderator has plainly stated that he doesn't want any repercussions legal and otherwise for the Board that may be a result of these kinds of posts.
That is his legal right to make and enforce those rules. He goes on further to say that there have been repercussions for other forums for posting this material AT THIS TIME! What is so difficult about that?It doesn't matter if a couple of Train-Sim Fans in east snowshoe think that it isn't fair or may not be a legally enforceable restriction in lower slobovia! Just in Case your forgot here is my entire original post on the subject..."Or at least not be so specific about when you actually shot the picture... OK where is the personal attack or belligerence there????

Now you have given every Tom, Dick, and Harry info theyy need to cause harm to the train, crew, equipment, railroad.
I must say I agree with Chuck (and its only very rarely I disagree with Chuck). Please cease and desist posting military movements at least until hostilities cease, and our guys are back home. If I am railfanning, and a Military train comes by, I put my camera up in a hurry. I have no desire to be detained as a terrorist. Have you read Trains Magazine lately? I know both of the people in the article from Texas over email. It's not fun to be detained for hours by th FBI.Support your troops. Help do your part to keep them safe... If someone were to attack the train based on your info, you have just impeded the VERY important war effort on the home front. THink a while about what you just did.

Although I doubt any harm would come from us posting military info on these forums, I think it would be a good idea to wait about a week after you saw the train and then post about it. I don't think taking pictures of military trains will get you into any trouble as long as you photograph the power on the train and not the actual cars. I've never been questioned when photographing military trains and have just gotten friendly waves from the crews.Jordan

Or ban photos of crashes in MSTS in case terrorists decide to attempt crashing a train! Or ban MSTS altogether because terrorists could use it to plan attacks! It's just stupid! That would be like me taking a picture of a military truck on a motorway in Britain, posting it on a vintage vehicles website, and being arrested for it because terrorists could target that truck! You do not know what you are talking about in my opinion! The posting of pictures and schedules and locations of military movements is ALWAYS prescribed during time of war.
This request has been made repeatedly by the UK and US governments (Those are UK troops are they not?)Your analogy of the train and a truck is a false one.
Military Movements of any kind are routinely considered for targeting.
The key here is not to make the information gathering phase any easier for the enemy. If you can't see and understand that then we are wasting our time talking here. And you need to go back to playing in a sandbox. And I am spot on calling CP91202 a supporter of Saddam and Osama! He is refusing to conform to a request from the moderator of this board, the UK MOD, US DOD, US Dept. of Homeland Security and Probably the Canadian MOD (though I couldn't find any evidence of that) and various RRs including CSX, NS, BNSF and others. There is nothing childish in what I say. Your uninformed naivety on the other had betrays your age and lack of experience in life. If you are right and I am wrong why tell him to pull the pictures...
after all the FBI and RCMP shouldn't be any threat to him, if he is in the right!

RE: ARMY TRAIN

Ok,
IF the army wanted these trains moved without notice, they would have run it during the middle of the nite when people cant get a good look, not put it on the line up and take other measures. If you guys dont like the post dont read it. And as Chris said, ALL canadian railfans know where these milatary trains go.

RE: ARMY TRAIN

It's still Canadian Forces which identifies those of us in uniform (27 years and counting here). DND is the collective name for the department identifying civilian and military combined the same way as is done with the US DoD and the UK MOD.Stew
