I've just got Trainz (not the 2004 version) loaded and running after finally getting a decent graphics card sorted, and decide to see what else if available out there on the web.A nice GT boxcar seems a simple sort of addition, so I try with that. It comes as a Zip, which is no problem, except that there's nothing to tell me where to put it - no smart remarks please - and the not-very-wonderful manual doesn't seem to say, so I figure out that it probably goes in the Custom folder; I unzip to there, and it duly creates a set of subfolders, which seems sensible. But Trainz doesn't recognise that the new item is there, and there's nothing I can find that will let me tell Trainz that it exists. It's time to ask the more experienced, thinks I - and so I do!TIA for help!

RE: Newbie download question

Hi JohnI cannot exactly remember but have a look for a directory called custom or something similar in world directory.
Failing that jump onto the forums at http://forums.auran.com/TRS2004/forum/default.htm and do a search. You will need to be specific as there are a lot of posts involving TRS2004.
You will also get great help if you post on the above forum in the Tech support location.
cheersDave

RE: Newbie download question

Thanks for that, Dave - nice that someone replied!I went back into the ghastly Auran website - which may be easy to navigate when you know your way round, but certainly isn't straightforward for a first-time visitor - and found some instructions, which I duly applied. Result - the downloaded box-car finally shows up in the My Collection window, but clicking on it causes the program to terminate with no real explanation. Have these people been taking lessons on error messages from Microsoft?I think that maybe it's a duff file in some way, so I try again. This time it's not a zip but a 'cdp' file that I download; what the heck's that? Nothing to say anywhere visible on the Trainz website, but there is a 'download helper'. Try that, and I constantly get the old 'Page does not exist' error. So the reward for trying again is a download that I can't expand (if that's what it needs? Who knows? Maybe you dip it in bat's blood at full moon?)How can anyone use this stuff without getting a nervous breakdown? The instructions are inadequate or don't work, the manual doesn't tell you what you need to know, the file-types are something I've never heard of (and I've been in computing since the mid-1970s!) there seem to be several different versions and builds which have interesting incompatibilities, and all in all it looks like a horrible unprofessional mess; and I'm not exactly naive at this stuff - indeed, I write custom software for a living.I'll dump it, I think, and get back to something that works

RE: Newbie download question

Go to "auran.com/trainz", click on "service packs". You should need to get three. Then go to "content creators" and get "content dispatcher"

RE: Newbie download question

Sincere thanks for that, so I tried it; 'Web site not available' is the message received on each of four separate attempts.I really do appreciate your help, but I've got to the point of saying 'This software, and the website that is apparently meant to support it, are badly put together and the creators seem to lack the nous, the competence or the will to do things right, so stuff it.'Sorry for the rant, but I want to do this for fun; hassle I can get any working day from my customers - and I can at least make them pay for it John

That's because all of the auran.com/ etc. sites don't seem to be up right now. only the forums, so try again in a little while. You shouldn't need anything from auran.com/TRS2004, as it is not truly relevant to your version.EDIT: It's working now

>EDIT: It's working now No-one can accuse me of not beiong persistent...Back to the Auran website, which is as you say now back on line; find the relevant area, download the first two packs. The third turns out to be a stonking 218Mb, but there's a CD available - except that it apparently isn't, as there's no way to order it and the text dithers about whether or not it actually exists yet or will exist at some unspecified time in the future. So I either do a 218Mb download, buy the latest Trainz 2004 for another thirty quid, or accept that I'm stuck where I am, with a product which even the originators admit has a pile of 'issues' a mile long. Brilliant!Sincere thanks anyway!

>EDIT: It's working now Indeed it is - so back I go; no-one can accuse me of not being persistent! My original version was 1.1, so I download the first two appropriate service packs - more about that in a moment. The third is a stonking 218Mb, but the site says that there's a CD available, except that it apparently isn't as there's no way to order it and the text is rather unclear about whether it really does exist or will exist at some time in the future. So at best I'm stuck with something that even the originators admit has a list of 'issues' a mile long. I say a couple of rude words, get off the web and run the two service packs I've got, both of which say that they've upgraded Trainz correctly.Guess what? That's right, Trainz now doesn't run at all. Presumably I'll now have to uninstall it and start all over again without those service packs that I've spent the last 45 minutes downloading - and all I originally wanted to do was download a simple boxcar! There's something mad about this; the more I try, the worse the product seems to be, and yet the more time I invest in it the less willing I am to just throw it all away, but now I really have reached that stage. So my final question is this - is the Uninstall safe, or will that trash my hard drive or do something else antisocial?

I suggest that you try this: uninstall/reinstall trainz. Run it once. Go back to the Service Packs page for your product. If you scroll down the page, there is one that is a complete upgrade from "retail" to "1.3". These are not just bug-fixers. Sp3 has many, many new features, almost like getting a newer program, for free. So I suggest you keep trying, as it is well worth the download hassel. After you download it and install, try to open Trainz again, then close it. From the same page, you will now need to get the "content update pack". This should be applied after Sp3, and alows you to unpack those .cdp files, and automatically puts them in the right folder.EDIT: For the CD, go to http://www.auran.com/trainz/shop/Display_Product.php?PID=18

>http://www.auran.com/trainz/shop/Display_Product.php?PID=18 ... where, as'd noted earlier, there is nowhere that lets you actually order the CD. Is Auran a serious company or a stale joke?I really do appreciate your help, but anyone making a half-decent product wouldn't need to rely on the users getting the help of passers-by!

Heaven help me, I buy plenty on the web, and this is the first time that I've not even been able to find the right place to do it!

Follow the link for the CD, I've tried it numerous times, and it leads straight to the page with the green CD and the "Buy Online" link. Does it take you somwhere different?EDIT: Is yours by any chance a UK-specific version?

RE: Newbie download question

>Are you registered with Auran? Of course Going into the Shop allows me to buy a whole host of things, but for the item I need (Trainz Service Pack 3, which for some bizarre Auran reason is coded as TRAINZ04) I get a screen which has all the appropriate information but no BUY option. But it does tell me at length what a great product it is. Typical incompetent Auran, I'm afraid.
