"Should I get Trainz?"

Hi everyone,I bought MSTS about 2 years ago. I have been farting around with that but since it is way to complicated for me I have given up on it. After being a model railroader all my life (13 years) Trainz looks like the kind of program for me. A couple questions.1. Is the route builder as easy as it looks?2. Are there any east coast engines or cars that are downloadable?
(CR, CSX, NS)3. How are the graphics on a low end computer?
(Don't know the specs but I have a Dell Genuine Intel, Windows ME)4. Is inserting downloaded things as hard as MSTS?ThanksTRAINBOY101Long Live the Snail

Hi,
If you going to get Trainz.
I'd say wait untill Trainz Simulator 2004 comes out. Also, i found that altough Trainz is easy to make routes, that running the train wasn't as realistic.( altough sounds were better)

RE: Should I get Trainz?

Personal opinion, do NOT wait till TRS2004 comes out if you can afford that.
UTC has so much to offer and it will NOT become obsolete even after the TRS2004 comes out.
Also when UTC came out Auran offered 22.5% discount for registered member who bough UTC online direct from Auran,
so I think it is pretty safe to guess (and Auran themselves have given clue) that there will be discount.Georgi

Hello everyone, I'm chinese. I bought a copy of TRAINZ in China two days ago. Then I found that there's no serial number in this copy. So I can't download those adds on the site. I wonder why. Who can help me?
Sorry for my poor English.

RE: Should I get Trainz?

The copies sold in China is defintely legal (Trainz has
a Chinese version and sell the copies through a Chinese
company), but much cheaper to cope with the Chinese
buying power, so Trainz didn't give the serial number
to Chinese consumers. I won't tell you the price they
sell in China )

I dare say that there's no problem in law about those copies but the serial number. I think it might be the problem between Auran and the Chinese company. We should have our serial number.

RE: Should I get Trainz?

I dare to suggest you mail the Auran support about this issue. Given how legal copies of Trainz sold in Eastern Europe come with serial number although their 'buying power' is comparable to the Chinese, i think it might be you were simply ripped off.

Hi, TrainBoy,If you haven't already done so, definitely download the free demo of UTC. I downloaded it two days ago and I'm absolutely blown away, first of all by the way the thing works, and secondly by all the info that is available on the official website. I also have a "budget" system, (eMachines, Athlon 1600+ 1.4Ghz processor, 256MB DDRAM, and an S3 ProSavage8 on-board video chipset.) I tried to install and run MSTS last weekend and it crashed my system. Not compatible with my video/driver. TrainZ works on my system and looks pretty good. There are several sliders you can move to control the amount of detail you get, so you can dial it in to the best you can get for any particular system config. Try the demo and let the rest of us know what you think.Bill

RE: Should I get Trainz?

I have been looking at Trainz. Is it possible to use the various Routes developed for MSTS with Trainz? It appears the trains and cars used in MSTS are compatible and interchangable with Trainz. Is this correct?Bob Edwards

MSTS Routes cannot be switched over to Trainz.. and vice versa...MSTS Cars\Locomotives and other objects usually have to be converted to suit the Trainz game, So they cant be thrown straight into Trainz, but if the original creator fiddles with the models.. then yes its not too hard for them to get it in Trainz Catchya

RE: Should I get Trainz?

Thanks Catchya for the info on cross over between MSTS and Trainz. I have seen forum messages indicating that "bogeys" must be added along with engines when you download. Does bogeys apply to the trucks of the engines and cars? Or just what does it mean? Being an Aussie company, there must be some words that just don't connect with us Americans. In viewing comments about routes (MSTS) OR layouts (Trainz) just how many good prototype layouts concerning US railroads are there on Trainz--either via product or download? I don't want to get into Trainz if it means driving a BNSF dash9 across tracks in eastern Austrailia--if you know what I mean. Thanks for your assist.Bob Edwards

RE: Should I get Trainz?

Well Auran are moving more to Train Simming now more than ever with the new TRS2004. However there already is a huge prototypical following in UTC. Check out http://www.trainzproroutes.com/ for a couple of proto routes including Tehachapi. Take a look at the screenshots and judge for yourself. Or do a search here on the screenshot forum for Trainz Tehachapi, and check out the cool screenshots. There are plenty more out there aswell.RegardsAXE

Bogey's or 'Trucks' as you may know them.. Are so simple its really not worth the fuss alot of people kick up.Easiest way to look at it this , 1 piece of rolling stock is 2 objects.. (Not Loco's etc.. they can have multiple parts) The car body itself is one and the second part is the Bogey\Truck..
The Body will have its own personal KUID and so will the bogey\truck. In the config file for the car the bogey's KUID will be listed in it, Trainz will know from that just which bogey the car uses. Many cars created by many creators could all use the one single set of bogey's.. Therefore you would end up just downloading the Body's and not the bogey\truck at the same time - EVERY time you download a new car using that uses that bogey.Sometimes people will not download the 'dependency' clearly listed in the pop-up window with the information of the car your about to download, Or a 'Pack' that a creator made, may not have the bogey in it as he may of uploaded the bogey\truck to the Auran DS allready with a previous model. What happens on your machine is that your cars will simply have no bogeys\trucks.. Everything will still work, Its just that your cars will hover
Trainz UTC (and TRS2004) should tell you as soon as you load up the game, If an asset is missing. Its then a case of exiting back to desktop and opening up a program that comes with trainz called 'Content Manager'. Open that, View the Error log (found under the 'File' IE tab) And it should tell you the KUID (Dependencies) missing. If the Item is on Aurans DS then a simple click on the highlighted missing KUID will open up a new IE window for you and if alls going well, the Auran download station (DS) should load up and have the missing object for you to download. Then its simply a case of downloading it, installing it and your done. The only time ive seen it be a real problem is getting hold of a great foriegn train that is also on a foriegn website.. And simply not being able to read the web page. But a simple post to the main Auran forums and you usually find out where it is pretty quick The real beauty of it is if you dont like the look of the bogey\trucks.. You can simply open up the config file and swap the KUID listed under the 'Bogey' section for the bogey\trucks, that you like I did this for about 200 reskins of Aurans original models designed for paint shed... And it works a treat Hope that made sense..Catchya

RE: Should I get Trainz?

I have installed the UTC Demo on my grandson's computer. Since doing so, I sent AURAN a request concerning some of it's features. I have not had a reply in over a week. Here are some of my questions concerning the Demo and the real thing.
1. The Demo has signals that are merely cosmetic. A red light means nothing in the Demo, are the signal lights in the complete package of UTC applicable to the movement of the train? 2. The Demo can be played with as much train speed as possible in very bad track conditions to the point speed limits are meaningless. Is this also true in the complete application?3. The Demo allows for coupling at high rates of speed. Is this true with the complete application of UTC.4. Points 2 & 3 seem to indicate that a derailment is not possible with UTC--is this the case? I've heard that some railways are wanting games to be fixed to prevent any wrecks--very unrealistic! Can you have a wreck with UTC?5. In checking with various webpages, it seems that everyone connected with Trainz wants an extra shilling here and and extra dollar there for engines, rolling stock, routes, etc. I have found some places where that is not true, but when compared with MSTS it seems if I go to UTC it will cost me more to get add ons. Is this true?6. Also in checking various webpages, it seems that a route in Trainz is more related to a model train route than with prototype routes that are available and becoming available with MSTS. Just how many prototype routes are available other than Trainzproroute or whatever it is called? Thanks for you help.Bob Edwards

RE: Should I get Trainz?

Bob,There are prototypical routes available in Trainz other than what TrainzProtoRoutes is offering. Some are fictional but based off of several sections of different railroads. Such as the Erie Limited Route.I know that "Grogstop" is working on several proto routes in the Eastern USA. And I'm still buidling the NEC from NYC to Newark Penn as well as the rest of the NY Metro Area routes on one map.I've taken a breather though and gotten back into MSTS, mostly due to the various different types of equipment that offer passenger views in MSTS. Something not as common in Trainz for the time being. But regardless I love both Sims.Keep your eyes open and I'm sure you'll see more proto routes for Trainz as time goes on.Cheers
