I haven't got MSTS, but I've heard that creating routes in Trainz is much easier than that part of MSTS. When I was looking at which of these to purchase recently, I chose Trainz, partly because most of the information and downloads are at one place. Also, the downlaods are all packaged in the same way, so that its ridiculously easy to install downloads (no manually moving files from folder to folder).I haven't seen UTC in shops - the closest I've seen in the UK is Trainz v1.1 (the very old version, long since superseded) for sale at Amazon. You could try purchasing UTC from the auran shop on their website, or if you only have a debit card, see what uktrainsim can offer. They recently had a lot of UTC arrive in stock, but it went pretty quickly.

RE: Trainz UTC

I've been using MSTS for almost a year and just recently got UTC. Here's my take:I like the UTC sounds better (the rain sounds so good you think you are getting wet - also, the lightning effects are neat).UTC lets you control more than one locomotive, individually; MSTS permits only one.Uncoupling cars with UTC is nice - just point to the spot and click.UTC lets you get the camera down to eye level and also lets you zoom way out (too far sometimes - you too often see the edge of the layout); but MSTS has two external cameras (vs 1 for UTC) and permits changing the field of view.Placing and changing a consist is more direct and convenient in UTC.UTC baseboard concept lends iteslf to modular layout building, even by groups of people.UTC has actual tech support.UTC routes are easier to build.UTC has operating turntables; MSTS doesn't.UTC manual is too small to read. I enlarged it on my copier. On the other hand, there are many more add-ons, utilities, and guides for MSTS.It sounds as though I favor UTC, but that's not yet the case. I'm still weighing them.Cheers, AlTrainz UTC – image 2

RE: Trainz UTC

There's plenty of good stuff, no doubt, but the number can be misleading since one loco may require 4 or 5 separate items. I suppose this enables greater reuse of common parts such a sbogies and pantographs, etc.?AlTrainz UTC – image 3

The download size in Trainz is much smaller then with MSTS.Dick van den HovenTrainz UTC – image 4

Hi,Compared to MSTS, Trainz have, IMHO, the better cards now.
When you see what can be achieved by the - difficult - Scripting language of Trainz, it's amazing. And far more then can be done with the Activity Builder of MSTS.
Simple example:
You arrive at a yard with a freight train. A switcher comes from a spur, picks a bunch of cars of your train and you depart.
Very simple, indeed. Impossible in MSTS, possible in Trainz. The signalling of Trainz is still not very good and the signalling system of MSTS is better but have problems too. Some people state that Trainz looks toyish. Well when you see what third party builder have achieved in Trainz by now, you never will agree with that statement. This doesn't look toyish, IMHO:Trainz UTC – image 5Dick van den HovenTrainz UTC – image 6

RE: Trainz UTC

Sorry for veering off on a tangent, but the logging picture brings up a question. I've downloaded a really neat Dunkirk narrow gauge loco and plan to download a narrow gauge layout or two, but I haven't spotted any narrow gauge rolling stock. I must be searching with the wrong text strings. I assume there's NG rolling stock available. Right? If so, can anyone give some search tips. Cheers, Al

It looks kinda Toyish actually MSTS rails fit precicely, whereas I can SEE the FACINATING little dents and non-fitting joint to the bridge. The Scenery is VERY impressive though!Hopefully their new version will be prettier from a track perspective

No.. ScottandTara's right.. the tracks do look shyte Some folks have gone to the effort to make sweet looking junctions and curves that blows the default spline styled track away.. But unless you have a good system, the polly count of the nice ones can blow you away Checkout the Surveyor movies to see how track is laid.. Kinda gives ya an insight as to why the tracks dont look to crash hot..http://www.auran.com/trainz/moviez.htmIm sure improvments are one the way Catchya's

RE: Trainz UTC

Hi guysWell, I read all your posts and concluded that there were several differing opinions about Trainz v. MSTS as I might have expected.I decided to d/l the demo from Auran to see for myself and being honest, I have to admit to being slightly disappointed. I don't like the rails or the textures generally. MSTS looks almost cinema like on my rig and Trainz didn't. The included scenario didn't function correctly because some of the required consists didn't/wouldn't load and therefore the 'activity' couldn't be completed because the points would not set correctly for the required paths!I think tha I will hold fire at least until the next version arrives and then see if there any improvements. Thanks for all your responses...I didn't expect such a response. All the greensFrankAll the greens

Hi guysI didn't play the scenario correctly Didn't realise that progress reports (& points) were added. It did work after all so apologies for the earlier unjustified critism regarding the scenario. In fact the scenario possibilities look interesting.....can the voices be added to a scenario easily?Thought the sounds were quite good. All the greens

RE: Trainz UTC

I recommend waiting for Trainz Railroad Simulator. There will be a senario editor included with it. Hopefully it will be as easy as Surveyor is to use. Currently there is a program called "stopgap" by smileyman which makes it easy to write Senarios in UTC. It has the abiltiy to put voices into senarios. Called a Yak Pak I think. If ya check out Aurans forum "Trainz on the Road" you might find a spot close to you that the fans are demostrating Trainz. It will give you a better idea on how it works. Better senarios are available for the full game. RegardsAXE
