UNABLE to access Trainz updates, Downloads etc

HI
I have been looking in on Trainz website for about two years. As a registered member, I recieve frequent updates via e'mail.
Everything was fine up until a few months ago, when I went to access some new stuff that was announced. I logged in with my screen name, and password. This window pops up asking for a "Serial number."
What serial number? I do not have a serial number, and I was never issued one. Where do I find this serial number they keep asking for.
As of the last few months, Trainz updates are totally useless to me, as I cannot access any of the new stuff.
I have purchased and recieved as gifts some of Trainz products, Regional Add-On Pack for USA & Canada, LTV Mining, and others.
A few days ago, my son surprised me with PAINT SHED, which I had been talking about. It looks very nice, but there are no instructions how to use it. Finally figured out some of the Paint Shop stuff, but the Consist section is useless.
On the back of the box, is a short note stating "Additional Templates released for "FREE" download at virtualtrainz.com
I access the virtualtrainz site, and that is as far as I got. I am denied access due to my lack of a "SERIAL NUMBER"
NOTE: TRAINZ is the only website that asks for a serial number. Whats with the serial number requirment??
Please, I could really use some help here.

Hi,As far as I know, the serial number is the number in the case of the Trainz CD. You must have used that number when you installed Trainz.
Auran wants you to register that number on their site, so they have control of piracy.Dick van den Hoven

Now I'm really confused. I don't have Trainz installed, and never had a Trainz CD to install Trainz, unless you are talking about the CD's in the Paint Shed or Regional Add-On Pack.
There are numbers on the backs of those two CD's, but I'm not sure which one is the serial number.
Other than that, I do not have Trainz installed, and was unaware I had to have it installed. When did this requirment begin?
On two ocassions during 2002, I had to go and help out my son in Virginia, due to a family emergency, which took me away from train simming for three to four weeks each time, so I might have missed this serial number Ruling.
How do I get this Trainz CD, and is it free or what is the cost??

Hi,Daniel, I assumed you have installed the Trainz CD.
Well, I have Trainz from the first version on, so there were no problems for me. I registered from the first version.
I believe the registration of the serial number at the Auran site, started with the introduction of Service Pack 3. With that pack, they changed the installer and the installer leads you through the registration process.To obtain Trainz, you can get it from Auran, but it is in the stores that sell Electronic games too. And I did a search at Amazon and they have it too.The newest version, Ultimate Train Collection, shortly called UTC, in fact version 1.5 cost $39.99 at Amazon.
The version of UTC, I purchased directly from the Auran, came with the newest version of Paintshed. I don't know if all versions of UTC have Paintshed included.As yes, I remember your name from an e-mail some days ago. Great fan of Ohio Rails too.Dick van den Hoven

You'll find that the paintshed that has been bought for you wont work at all without Trainz of any version installed.. DVD up above is correct.. if you are going to go ahead and buy Trainz, the best thing to do would be to buy Trainz UTC 1.5.
But.. The paint Shed that was bought for you.. was it for MSTS ? as Auran also make a Paint Shed program for MSTS.. If it is for MSTS then I suggest you post your questions for it over in this Forum -- > http://www.auran.com/trainz/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=7e393059d6fc3455ac9edd3d62edae08&forumid=8 As someone at Auran or another fellow MSTSr may be able to help you with it as Ive never used the MSTS version As for access onto the Auran Download Station to download new skins or Trains, buildings etc.. You have to have the game. When you install the game you'll be prompted for the serial number.. Then you go to the Auran website and create yourself a profile.. Once your serial number is inputed to the profile, you then have access to the Download Station along with many other features.Aurans Trainz UTC does come complete with the Auran Trainz Paintshed Good Luck.Catchya

THANK YOU Boweaval and Dvd;Both of you have really saved the day for me. Now I understand more about the serial number requirement.
I live on Long Island, in NY, and apparently while I was out of state in Virginia without access to my computer, I missed what was going on with Auran Trainz.
I was unaware that I had to purchase Service Pack 3 to get a serial number for Trainz web site and downloads. I was also not aware that Trainz also made Paint Shed for MSTS, which is aparently the one I have.
I went to the other Forum you mention via the link you were so kind to provide for me. Really apreciate that!
The new Trainz/MSTS forum is now added to my Favorites, so I may browse through it as needed.
The Paint Shop program my son bought me is very nice, and once we figured how to use it, I created three locomotives and a caboose in my Home road H.O. scale Midland Valley RR colors. Wait till Rich see's these plying the Ohio Rails.
I may purchase Trainz UTC, after I check out their Demo version, which I just recently downloaded, but have not had a chance to operate.

No problems .. Glad its sorted, Apparently the MSTS Paint Shed has a consist editor that is much easier to use than the default MSTS one too.. You can still join the Auran forum and create a profile.. Its just that you'll be limited to posting in General Off Topic, General Trainz Discussions, the MSTS forum I linked above, and I think F.A.Q and Technical forum but you can still read all the others.If you happen to buy Trainz ,All the service packs are free to download and all you have to do is go to this page http://www.auran.com/trainz/servicepacks.htm and select the cover that matches yours. They can be purchased from the shop on that site if you dont wish to download them Catchya

If you do purchase Trainz in the future, make sure you get Trainz Ulimate Collection, and not any previous version. Currently UTC is the newest version and you don't need to download SP3.While you are over at Aurans Trainz fourms, browse the other topic areas and say g'day RegardsAXE
