Hi all, I'm Will.I'm fairly new to the world of train sims (I only bought MSTS a few weeks ago) and I'm becoming very intrigued by the Trainz demo I just downloaded. It looks gorgeous. Trainz is definitely something I'd invest in but I have a question which I've been unable to answer by browsing forums for a few hours. In another post someone stated that the basic difference between MSTS and Trainz is that MSTS is geared towards real-life train simulation, whereas Trainz is more about simulating model trains -- the kind you'd set up in your basement. Well, does that mean that there are/will be very few "real-life" tracks for Trainz? MSTS comes with the six real-life tracks and some people have created beautiful real-life add-on tracks, and I find that this is the greatest appeal to me -- the pretense of conducting a train through a real place. Basically, then, my question is this -- in the Trainz community, is there an effort to simulate real-life tracks, or do people mostly create tracks that are fun and beautiful but fictional?Sorry for the long-windedness, and thanks in advance for any replies.W.

RE:

The current Trainz comes with 4 model like and 1 real world layout.
There are custom made real world long routes, but wehn comparing numbers of real world v.s. model, there are many more model ones.
If you are gonna buy Trainz, wait untill november. You will be able to purchase "Ultimate Trainz collection" which will have 130 additional rolling stock (including Locos) and mroe layouts too.
Even if you buy now, you will get $20 AUS discount, but waiting till november will be cheaper.
Making layouts with Trainz is really easy - you might have seen if from DEMO even you can't save.
Expect numbers of long routes to continue to grow.
I myself am making one real wolrd route which should be ready right after Ulitmate Trainz comes out.

The available ones are only models with steam sound and disel like physics made by users - not by auran.

RE:

>"Ultimate Trainz collection" which will
>have 130 additional rolling stock (including Locos) Please notice Tony Hilliam's statement about the 130:"Btw, the 130 locos, passenger cars, freight wagons and cabooses means total, not of each type. I think there are well over 50 locos."He does NOT use the word "additional." This was in response to your thread you started about what was included in UTC.In another thread, Tony says this, "Over 130 locos, passenger cars, freight wagons and cabooses (cabeese?)." He does not say "additional."In fact, here is his list from that post.New Scenarios
New maps and new content - routes from USA, Europe and Australia
New features
Over 130 locos, passenger cars, freight wagons and cabooses (cabeese?)
Over 1000 scenery, trackside and spline objects
Thousands more objects and stock available for free download from the Trainz Download Station
Trainz Paint Shed - repaint your favorite locos and rolling stock. Content Manager - to help you sort all your custom content
Content Dispatcher - to package your creations for distribution to others
Content Foundry - content configuration file utility for custom content creators
Gmax V1.1 by Discreet - a fully featured 3D modelling package to create 3D objects (based on 3D Studio Max)
Trainz Asset Creation Studio - Gmax gamepack that allows gmax objects to be imported into Trainz
Trainz Browser - for quick and easy in-game access to thousands of custom objects online So you may want to be careful about what you say will be in UTC or not.Lawrence

I wouldn't think so. So I am being careful.

RE: "real-life"?

Contrary to my distinguished collegues who have already answered, both MSTS and Trainz can do both--model railroad and prototypical railroad. They both have their strengths, they both have their weaknesses. They both have learning curves, they both are easy to use after going through the learning curve. They both have those who love the particular program, and they both have those who hate the particular program.Sometimes it comes down to actual personal preference rather than objective statements.I will, however, cite two objective facts that cannot be disputed:1. Auran (the creator of Trainz) has kept in contact with their user base better than MSTS--in fact, MSTS's contact is virtually zero.2. Trainz takes up less disk space than MSTS.Those are two facts that cannot be argued.Lawrence

RE: "real-life"?

Hi all, I just finished demonstrating Trainz at a local ( liverpool, NSW, Australia ) Exhibition, and I may be biased but let me say that we sold out of the copies we had, and in fact had to ship down extra copies. ( I am not sure if I can say how many we sold, but it was a substantual amount. )All I did all weekend was demo surveyor. I built a small point to point route/layout, ( which will be released soon )and then gave them a look of that in the Driver module. On that alone I sold many copies of Trainz. When people see trainz in operation for them selves there is no question in there minds........ok sure there are always people who will just say no, no matter what, but even a few of these people where convinced. I will tell you what...... How long does it take for MSTS to calculate a section of tiles when you want to build a new route ? what 5-10 + minutes ????? In surveyor I would already have a track layed down with a few switches and signals, maybe even some landscaping and with a quick save, I would be out of surveyor and into driver, then on my new route. ( in a matter of seconds ). What about the fact that the money you spend on Auran goes to a small Australian games developer and not into the hands of a world wide corporation like Microsoft. How much of that does KUJI get ???What does it matter anyway. I have both products anyway, and the world still turns......RegardsAXE

However more support for smaller company's wouldn't go astray, Especially when a smaller company has the guts, determination and or a better product than a multinational Billion doller corp. Just becuase a product has the name microsoft attached to it doesn't make a better product, and I think this is why many people prefer MSTS.Having said that though, I love Windose, I love most of their games, and I even enjoy MSTS, ( however at the momment it sits on the shelf gathering dust as do my real model Trains....

RE: "real-life"?

Microsoft is just the publisher of MSTS. The game was made by a small UK company named Kuju.Almost all computer games are made by small local companies, and are then published by a handful of big games publishers such as Microsoft, Electronic Arts or Strategy First. A recent example is Battlefield 1942 which is published by EA but made by a small Swedish company named Digital Illusions CE. So Auran is not unique in any way.And I bet the owner/owners of Auran would jump with joy if Microsoft wanted to publish Trainz. So your entire post reeks with envy.....

yeah true I guess that the point wasn't well made. I got a bit excited. It doesn't matter who makes or produces the product anyway. RegardsAXE/me takes foot from mouth.
