Sep-21-01, 08:29 AM (EST) 1. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" Yes! Especially the W-3 Mike! The photo shown must be from the early 40's, as most lost their extended piston rods before the war. Also there were number boards mounted on the smokebox about 1947 or 8. If anyone decide to tackle this or make the USRA mike more like it, I have a huge photo collection of NP stuff. Check out my website at www.geocities.com/eve_n_stephen for lots of NP stuff. There's a whole page on the 2-8-2's, and another on the very popular S-4 4-6-0's they had. The only change that's crucial is the headlight, very distinctive on the NP!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-21-01, 02:37 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-01 AT 02:45 PM (EST)Well, having done a few NP skins already (one of the Freight F7's, the Loewy F9's, and the SW-1200), I'll gladly volunteer to do the SD-45. I'm also planning to do a W-3 Mikado at some point in the near future, but right now I'm still deciding whether to fork out $50 for 3D Canvas Pro or wait for TS Design Studio to come along. But once I get going, the W-3 and a 24-foot NP wood caboose are high on the priority list. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Man, if you do the 24' hack, well, that would be excellent!TimOh, yah, I have been meaning to tell you that I love your Freight F-Unit. Is there a "B" unit for it on it's way?

Sep-23-01, 01:59 PM (EST) 17. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" Thanks! When I did the freight F7's there weren't any B units available, so I didn't make any at the time. Since then I've been busy with other things, so I haven't done any B's yet. However, when I made the Loewy green F9's I created the files in PhotoShop with the colors in a separate layer from the surface detail (rivets, panel lines, louvers, etc.), and did the weathering on a separate layer too, and then saved that multi-layered .psd file as well as the flattened .bmp and .tga versions. That way, I can go back into that .psd file and change color schemes easily without having to re-do all the other details, so I can create a freight scheme B unit very quickly now. When I do the W-3, it's going to be an entirely new model, so it will definitely have the doghouse and the NP headlight. Too bad MSTS doesn't allow more than one passenger view, I'd really like to add one for the doghouse, but I suppose the view from the caboose would be better. I'll probably do several versions to represent coal-fired and oil-fired engines (including the SP&S ones), with and without piston rod extensions, different sand dome placements, etc. I may even have to do a W-5 while I'm at it! I saw the SP&S 539 in Battleground, WA when I was out there to ride the SP&S 700 trip in April, and got a bunch of pictures of it. I've also been working on a W-3 in N scale using the Kato mike and the GHQ conversion kit, and I collected some photos while I was researching for that project. I can always use more though! There are some basic line drawings in the book "NP Classic Steam Era" (which I have), but if anybody could point me towards something more detailed, I'd really appreciate it!Richard Jenkins Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-21-01, 05:01 PM (EST) 7. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" As far as a W-3 Mike, I have reskinned one in the NP livery. If anyone is interested and I get enough response I will post it for the general public in the files section of this website. It still needs some minor work (i.e. the name is backwards on the tender and I havent found the sand dome on top to place the small number) but it is a really nice unit to operate. Kevin Ruhoff

Sep-21-01, 06:15 PM (EST) 8. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" I have a very large collection of NP photos (mostly black and white, but some color slides from the 40's and 50's) also many books and magazines with plans and dimensional drawings. I probably have 100 negs of W-3's and quite a few of 24 foot cabooses. I can't do the modeling or skinning, but can provide info to those who can. I have about 1/4 of the collection scanned (I can scan up to 4x5 negs). Let me know if I can help bring back the NP!Even though it won't be right, I wouldn't mind having the Mike in an NP skin! Also, the GN mallet is roughly the same as the NP Z class (hint). Something odd I noticed when running the mallet as a helper with the USRA Mike, the mallet's drivers turn quite a bit slower than the mikes! I'm not sure which is to blame, but it looks rather strange to have a low drivered engine's wheels going slow, while the mike's are really churning (not slipping, this even happens with the throttle closed on the level!).Thanks for the NP caboose!Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-23-01, 12:01 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" Ken,I've got that shot and one straight on front shot. Also, do you have the Nov. 1993 Model Railroader magazine? It has a good set of color drawings, front side and rear, both A and B units. I can scan and send that to you as well. Would you prefer I send the photos to you as email attachments or post them here. The MR drawings probably shouldn't be posted, I don't know about copyright issues involved. I imagine it would be OK to email a scan to you though. Steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-23-01, 01:23 PM (EST) 16. "RE: Wanted -- Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" Hi Ken,
Let me know how far along you are with that early passenger scheme skin - I've been working on a set of those too, but I don't suppose there's much point in duplicating each other's efforts. I was also planning to do a set of heavyweight passenger cars in that scheme, so if your engines are almost done, I might as well abandon mine and get working on the passenger cars.Btw, I'm planning to get the SD-45 finished up tomorrow, so that should be available for download on Tuesday.Richard Jenkins Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-24-01, 11:01 PM (EST) 18. "northern pacific 24 foot wood caboose" Funny that this should get mentioned over and over again. I was looking for a first model to build in 3d studio max. My first choice would be an NP steamer, but after really looking at how complex they are, I decided to start with something a little easier. So I began working on a 24 foot NP/SP&S wood caboose. Will be based on drawings and pictures from the SP&S caboose book. Currently about 75% done, just needs a little work to the end platforms, the smoke stack, and the ladder. If I get it far enough along to play with, I was looking for some beta testers.I have three questions about these, what material is the roof made of, is it just bare painted wood, or some kind of covering? Roof Walkway, steel mesh, or wood? End platforms look to me to have been steel mesh, is that correct? I haven't found a good pic of the NP version, so will probably release this painted for the SP&S. Unless someone wants to share an NP photo of one with me.Frank Gabbard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-24-01, 11:47 PM (EST) 19. "RE: northern pacific 24 foot wood caboose" I have the "Mainstreeter" (NP Hist. soc. mag) issue on NP wood cabooses, complete with lettering, dimensions, and photos. All in B&W, of course. Also probably some color shots, I know I have one or the end. I have the Ambroid model in HO, I could scan it and post these as well. It will be tomorrow afternoon though.StevePS The wood caboose is one I've really wanted! I rode in many of them. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Message Areas - "Wanted – Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" – image 7
Tonight I'm mapping the textures to the 3d body, sort of a slow process. That is why the roof looks so weird. I had not thought of looking through the Mainstreeters, I have them only back to 1998, what issue were the wood cabooses in? I'm looking for input on this, so any suggestions anyone has, fire away.Frank Gabbard Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-25-01, 07:47 AM (EST) 21. "RE: northern pacific 24 foot wood caboose" Hi Frank,This is one I had to send for, Fall 1987, only available as a photocopy. Here's a bit of info that might help.
Message Areas - "Wanted – Someone to Skin SD-45 in Northern Pacific's scheme:-)" – image 8
The roofs were generally black, although now and then, painted silver. They were canvas cloth stretched over the wood, about like tent material. The end details changed. As originally built, they had ornate curved back rails, only 26" tall. Several ment were pitched over these when slack ran out in starting (rough engineers). After many complaints and injuries, 20 or so years worth, they were changed, in the late 30's and 40's. I'll dig out some of my photos later today.steve Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-26-01, 11:14 AM (EST) 23. "RE: northern pacific 24 foot wood caboose" Steve,Thanks for the pics and diagram there exactly what I need. I've got the monad on the model allready, just gotta find "Main Street of the Northwest", and it will look a lot like an NP unit. I've noticed some minor differences in the Cabooses, the last photo you sent has the side of the cupola flush with the side of the caboose, the other pics I have show some of them recessed.Anyway, I had a little setback last night, after 3 hours of texture mapping the roof, and the front of the cupola, I accidently deleted the center on one side, I was deleting unused (unseen) polygons on the inside of the caboose, and accidently clicked o the side, had it saved before I realized what I had done. Fortunately I back her up every day, so I just lost one days worth of work. Good news, the more I do this, the faster I get. Watch this board and I'll drop a message when I have it done enough to send out.Once again, thanks for the photos and drawings.Frank Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Sep-26-01, 01:59 PM (EST) 24. "RE: northern pacific 24 foot wood caboose" The cupolas were originally set in from the side by about an inch or two, and the sides of the cupola then slanted in a couple more inches from there. Most were rebuilt around the 1950's I believe (don't have the specific info in front of me right now) with the sides of the cupola flush with the sides. Some also had the letterboard removed. There were also a few other variations worth noting. The 1200-series cabooses only had two windows per side (not including the cuplola) with an additional small window on one side only. The 1700-series cabooses were similar, but the spacing of the windows was slightly different. The 1700's also had steel underframes as built, the other classes were similarly rebuilt in the 1920's. The 1600-series cabooses (which it looks like yours is) were rebuilt from 4-wheel bobbers around 1910. They had three windows on each side, and the cupola was located further in from the end than on the 1200 and 1700 series cars. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
