I emailed MLT while ago, and no reply. I am asking permission to Upload a pacl of reskins of the BOcoal car from the Sandpatch Route. I did repaints of Main Central's 100 ton coal hoppers. #3000-3007. They are based on the real paint, and Non Graffitti. #3007 is based on the real number. But I added graffitti to it and covered pretty much the whole side. I will post pics later. and I really hope MLT gives me permission..
I will NOT upload the .s file.

RE: Permission Needed by MLT

Can't you find a freeware model for those hoppers? That would make it more accessible for us and it wouldn't be quite as sticky to go about getting permission. You need to respect the wishes of the developer, ESPECIALLY if it is a payware model.Maine with Harvest Gold, Tricolor, and Blue: The Way Life Should Have Been!

RE: Permission Needed by MLT

All, Just for clarification - - - Has MLT changed their repaint policy ??? I posed this question on the MLT boards several months ago and I believe it was Andy (MLT) who answered... He stated that their official policy was that products could be repainted - as long as you did not upload the shape file... This was back around the time Don Shriner released his great looking repaints of the SD70... As most are aware - their seems to be a substatntial change in the MLT organization - did this change as well ???Thanks,
Scott

>err... crap.. I already Uploaded it... well now we got 2

Even though MLT is pretty easy with it's repaint policy, it is always courteous to contact the developer about it and possible show them what your repaint looks like. It would be different if it was freeware, but since it is payware, letting them know would be nice, since you are using their textures.

RE: Permission Needed by MLT

Ok, my bad...misunderstood your post, you didn't specify what was uploaded, so just assumed everything went up. Pretty easy to do when you state "oops, already uploaded it(whatever it is). Be more specific and you'll draw less attention.

>And I was talking about me uploading the CPrail GP40. so dont flip out so easy. Next time, proofread, and if nessesary, clarify your original wording. From your previous posts, I highly doubt that anyone would have guessed that you were referring to the CP Rail GP40 - don't be surprised that everyone assumed that you uploaded the hoppers...after all, that is what this thread is (was?) about, right?

>letting them know would be nice, since you are using their textures.Letting them know? It's not just common courtesy in this case - it is required. The model is payware, for one, and furthermore, so are the textures. I address the below to the newbies of the reskinning community:Think about it. Just because the 3D model is required to run the piece, and so happens to be the most vital component of making a MSTS model work, doesn't exclude the textures from being just as important - you pay for the textures too. Most payware groups allow reskins based on their original textures, for the reasons below:#1: It helps to contribute to the hobby, and allow those who own the models (but may not have the time or patience to reskin them) to run high-quality models in not one, but many roadnames. #2: It helps to bring more customers to buy addons which they may not have considered purchasing, if it weren't for the 3rd party reskins available for the the units included in that specific payware addon. While most all payware groups to my knowledge allow reskins for these very reasons, don't let it appear to you that this is the "norm." There's no such thing as a payware addon you cannot NOT reskin. This ain't the case! Any payware group can ban all reskins of their textures to everyone, just the same as they may grant them to anyone. The textures that are included in payware addons have been laboriously perfected, just like the 3D models that these textures are mapped too. The 3D model isn't the only thing that requires careful courtesy - textures are just as important, and be grateful that you are allowed the privilege to reskin and publicly release these textures, which may vary only by a few pixels to the base textures by the original developers. It doesn't matter that the end user of your reskin also shelled out the bucks to buy the pack as well. It's not the end user that created the pack, and it's not the end user that you ask permission for. It's the developers that are important when you reach the permission stage - the developers who put a LOT (and I AM emphasizing this) of time and effort to build the pack that you plan to re-release. In part, or whole, it doesn't matter whether you reskin the whole kitten-kaboodle, whether you tweak one pixel in the textures, or if you change one line in the engine file (yes, engine files count to, along with EVERYTHING else).Every developer has his or her preferences. Do not take anything as a "given." I cannot stress this enough. Treat the contents with respect, as they rightly deserve.

I must say, MLT is by far the easest to get permission from. I just e-mailed their general inquiries and told them what I was doing and that I wasn't going to upload their .s, and got an E-mail back that looked somthing like this: Dave,
Sounds good to me.

Letting them know? It's not just common courtesy in this case - it is required. The model is payware, for one, and furthermore, so are the textures. Guess I could have worded it a little better, but you had made several valid points and I hope that people that reskin would remember them. I being an extreme novice at TSM modeling, I can understand the time and frustration some model builders put into their models and textures, which is why whether it be freeware or payware I try to contact the person who did the textures to get their permission, unless the texture is from a default trainset.
