RE: MONON Heavyweights on the way for Christmas

When Mr Barriger took over at the Monon,he had to ressurect that railroad,(just coming out of bankruptcy from the war years).
He made big, major improvements on the railroad,(to include making it the first completely diesel road by 1947!)
The passenger equipment was given a fresh look, and the designs were those of Raymond Loewy. The Monon re-painted their existing heavyweights,(as shown above),and purchased ex-Army heavyweight hospital cars, which were in turn modified into real luxury rides at Monon's own shops in Lafayette Indiana,(the hub of the company).
The cars as seen above are prototypically "correct" for steam or diesel(YAY!).....
BTW,a lot of people do not realize there really was a train called "The Midnight Special"(when they hear the song).
That train was the Monon passenger leaving Indianapolis for Chicago on the Indianapolis Division of the route.....

RE: MONON Heavyweights on the way for Christmas

I have had the great pleasure to see one of the "finished" products of this consist, and I will say this:The external detail on these cars will set a new standard for authenticity and detail,(IMHO),or they will come very close!.
I own the "American Classics" pack, and I thought they were good, but these cars will be GREAT.
I have seen the real thing as a youth, and I cannot wait.

They should look familiar to you Dick. I could not have done this without your kits. I used both your Heavyweights and your F3. I hope you will be pleased with the result. Many thanks again for making your kits available.

It will have to wait until next time. Already uploaded to NELs. Do you have a file name for me on the canton? or a link would even be better. I will be doing more F3's in the future. Thanks again Dick

RE: MONON Heavyweights on the way for Christmas

You will need the files:-
Ctnneqp1.zip Ctnneqp2.zip Ctnneqp3.zip Ctnneqp4.zip Ctneqpu1.zip & Ctneqpu1.zip from the file library and pick what you want out of them. The ace files are not quite as straight forward as those that came with the kit. With a bit of thought you should be able to use the original psp files though.

Now Available on Train-Sim. These repaints are by Carl Venzke (the fallen flag tank car guy). Bob Clark of the MONON Historical Society
collaborated with me on this project and was invaluable to me in providing historical details and critically reviewing my work. The song “Up and down the MONON”, which plays in the passenger view mode in the observation car, was provided by Bob along with countless photos and dozens of helpful comments. The fact of the matter is that most of the credit should go to Dick Cowen. The F3 repaint was done from Dick Cowens’ F3 Re-skinning kit and the heavyweights repaints were done from Dick Cowens’ Heavyweight coach kit 09/10/04. With out Dick making these kits available, making this set would not have been possible. Thanks Dick. The mail/baggage car was done from the default us2freight7 shape file was re-textured by Michael Gilmore and then modified by me. The Horn sounds were from F7 Horn sounds by M. Ellis (sorry I could not find any F3 sound files) the remaining sounds are from the MSTS GP38. The Cabview/1 also uses views from the MSTS GP38 so it needs
to be available for this to work properly.

RE: MONON Heavyweights on the way for Christmas

I challenge anybody to sit in the observation car for a while, listen to the music, and not end up humming it for the rest of the day!
(If my arm could just reach that beer on the table at the end!)..
