Chicago & Illinois Midland SD9 – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-04 AT 10:56 AM (EDT)

Hi all, this is my first reskin of a locomotive besudes the Miss. Pacific stuff that I have done for my personal use...It is about 95 percent done except for the difficulty I am having finding the proper Heralds for the sides of the cab. It is a Justin Cornell model and so far it is looking like the prototype(C&IM #60 was actually an SD18 with a low nose) except for the herald. If anyone knows where I could find the proper herald, please let me know, I would surely appreciate it. Will upload it when it is done to the file library as there seems to be a shortage of C&IM stuff. Thanks in advance...FrankReskin- http://www.geocities.com/frankoburns/SIM1.html

Frank
This should help, took me a little time to track down the shot I got of CIM 65 out at Ill Railway Museum.
It's a fairly raw scan,I did some color adjustment and you might need to do a little Photoshop work to get the exact herald you need but it should give you a start.
(edit)
You might want to contact Carlos Gomes with pics of the CIM SD9's while Justin's SD is a fantastic model Carlos is willing to mod his model to fit your needs(ie no dynamics etc)Gary S

RE: Chicago & Illinois Midland SD9

As a matter of fact, I think Carlos is working on a lownose SD18 as we speak...

Chazz
Didn't want to say anything quite yet but the 18 would look pretty nice in C&IM colors too.
Since Carlos seems to like some of the stranger critters as well maybe if we ask him nice we might be able to get an RS1325 out of him.Gary S

Ok, I got it. Who has been gluing parts of different locomotives?
Some parts could be used from the SD18, but the long hood and the trucks would have to be completely rebuilded. After the SD26 if you are interested in that one I can try if there's enough info about it.

To my surprise, both #30 and 31, the only 2 units built, originally for Chicago& Illinois Midland, are still in service. The C&IM, now called the Illinois & Midland, repainted them and left their original numbers http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=52529
30 and 31 as the above photo shows............Frank

RE: Chicago & Illinois Midland SD9

It surely is an interesting loco... I think the long hood belongs to a RS1, or am I wrong? I'm interested in EMD units and the oldest ones are those that deserve to be made. MSTS is crawling with so many Dashes, SD40's and so on, it seems nobody cares for other types of locos. After I complete the SD18 I can use some of the parts for the RS1325 that is, of course, if there are any repainters out there willing to give it some colours.

Pete, thanks for that info....I have seen the "C" flexicoil truck, but didn't know there was a "B" version....Did this type offer a higher adheasion rate? Didn't these units get used for a lot of short haul road frieghts? hence the special trucks, higher horsepower rating, and a low short hood for collision protection? Frank

EMD was probably more interested in high volume sales, hence, the GP series really filled the road switcher need. This probably accounts for why EMD never really offered much competition to the RS-1 or 2.Anyway, it seems there there was a time when Road and Branchline Switchers were all the rage and EMD was not really in a position to compete... (Think...10 years earlier to the BL2) Obviously, the 1325 was kitbashed to meet the needs, but re-using standard switcher trucks under such a unit didn't make much sense if the unit would need to operate at road freight speeds so an early version of 2-axle Flexicoil was placed underneath.Pete Willard

Adhesion will be about 25% for these on good track, about the same as most non computer assisted units.

RE: Chicago & Illinois Midland SD9

Yes, it seems a SW1200. I can increase the trucks' detail a bit more since it's a 2 axle one. Is there any diagram for the SW1200?

I've found one thing to remember with adapting hearld photos, the magic wand select tool is your friend.Carlos
Since you've already got the "serious" response I'll go for the silly. The RS1325 is the love child of a GP20 and an SW 1200(or a 12" equals 1' kitbash from EMD's parts box)Gary S
