Dash 9-40CW in NS colors… 1/2 way there?

What's an NS train pack without a Dash 9-40CW, right?Well, it would be possible to create one using Danny's Dash 9-44CW and his textures for the NS Dash 9-40C. There are some differences in the shapes, but it could be a solution for now. I replaced the regular "dash9a.ACE" texture with the NS one, and it works! All that is needed is for someone to make the "dash9b.ACE" and that's it. The "dash9a.ACE" is already done if you use the one from MLT's NS Engine Pack.I'm no good at doing any repaints, so if someone wants to make it, it'll make many people out there happy. This is only a suggestion, if anyone cares/is interested.P.S.- I hope Danny don't mind me using his C40-9 textures on a C44-9W Maybe Danny will make an NS C40-9W?

There's a reason we didn't include the wide cab dash9... it would have required a whole new cab view. And like many other TS companies we decided to stick with a line-up in which we could reuse our standard cab and just get the pack released.

However Danny, That is just about the only cabview not yet available for msts (a wide cab with a control stand, rather than desk top controls). Unless you make a proper cabview for a CN Dash 9 in the upcoming route? Won't be exact, but I wouldn't complain. We definetly need this cabview for msts. Also, what is an NS pack without C40-9W? Not arguing, just my opinion. Dave

Well actually Dave,TKW released a set of reskins of our FREEWARE C9-40W with a custom cabview from Graeme Cox (Sam Spade) that was a Control Stand vice desktop....

I remember last week watching a stopped BNSF Z-train on the TransCon near Laguna, NM, led by three BNSF C44-9W's and a NS C40-9W, and I was kinda wonderin' why I couldn't see no light through the cab windows of the NS unit......because the control stand was blocking out the light! I'd love to see MLT make a cabview of those, and sounds too, because I know for a fact that the 4000HP 7FDL16 sounds a lot different than the usual 4400HP 7FDL16. I was there, but they sure put out the same choking cloud of smoke when they get the highball...Too bad they don't mandate control stands. I don't like desktop controls. In a desktop cab, all of the controls are right in front of you too, so you don't have to reach far to use any controls or look to your left to read the guages. (Norfolk Southern's SD70M's conveniently have the computer display located right in front of the engineer, though).

I was all set to purchase the NS pack....then I realized there was no wide cab Dash9 I could really care less about the cab, as I usually run with shift1 view (no cab showing). But actually I would have made the NS loco an AI loco without a cabview. I run BNSF trains and would have loved to have a run through NS C44-9W in the consist. You see them all the time nowadays.I wish someone will do a reskin of the C44-9W in NS colors.

Actually gentlemen they are pretty much identical mechanically...
What NS did was take a good hard look at mechanical reliability and the actual demands for power on their line and decided that they would have GE de-rate their dash9s by about 10%... This produced almost a 20% improvement, IIRC, in both maintenance costs and fuel consumption... Also since they are the same weight the TE is the same so they can start the same sized trains. Because of Route Profile NS decided that they really didn't need the extra 400hp and attendant extra fuel consumption and maintenance costs.... This is also the reason the SD40 and SD40-2 outsold the SD45 series by at least 10 to 1.
However a microcode update to the Engine Control Computer and some fuel rack adjustments are all that is required to bring them up to 4400hp.
Similar thinking went into NS opting for Dash 9s instead of AC44s since they could get 3 dash 9s for the cost of 2 AC44s......Chuck Schneider

To be completely correct, there is a switch on NS D9-40CW's that can be set for either 4000 or 4400 HP. It is against company policy to set it to 4400, but there are several units running around in that mode.

Wrong. The rumor of the switch to increase the output of a C40-9W to 4400 HP is false. I've talked to many engineers and they all say there is no such switch on these locomotives. The way the power is reduced is via the fuel rack computer, which limits the fuel to the engine so that only 4000 HP is produced. This is basically what Chuck said above, I'm just mainly trying to put to rest the rumor of the switch once and for all.- - Nick Wilson

Apparently some units are some units aren't then. I assume that the older units are the ones that would not be equipped with the switch. In any case it's likely that many people don't even know it's there since it is never used. I will have to start looking on the next few D9-40Cw's I get and see if they are or are not equipped.

I finally have to ask this question....Are you not aware that we released a whole series of Dash8s and 9s with wide cabs? Complete with Cabs and Sounds. Are you also not aware that The Keystone Works as partners in the venture produced the NS versions of that package?????

The NALW models of Dash 8`s and 9`s are very nice. With minimal work you could do so much with them. They were ahead of the game long time ago......the cabviews are great.....never should these models be dissed.CG

I like the NALW stuff , and I really look forward to whats coming from them in the way of Keith Getter *Cough* GEVO *Cough* ACe *Cough*
( Sorry, all the LA smog is messing with me )But I have to admit, not all train engines look alike, and while I still use the NALW stuff, it's nice to have more then one make of engine on a train, for instance it's nice to use the NALW stuff with any MLT stuff due to the use that BNSF and UP is putting their leasing units through up here

To answer your question Chuck, yes, I am aware that you guys made a whole series of Norfolk Southern Dash 9-40CW's, but what bothers me most is that there is no 'good enough' cabview for one.
But your models are some of the best, in fact, I was stunned at how well the ones from your NS Dash 9-40C pack blend in with Danny Beck's, payware model, you can't even tell the difference, and in some ways I actually think yours is better.
I only think that one should have been included in MLT's NS pack, even if it aliased the cabview to the default Dash 9.BTW, I would never diss on peoples' models unless I could do better or if they were made by K***. And I don't know how to model, so I can only diss on K***. And there is nothing 'wrong' with NALW models, other than the very first ones which may have been 'dimensionally incorrect' but very few people can produce 'brass locomotives for MSTS' but I'm hardly a GE fan, so I don't know why I caused all this fuss. As for the different light configurations on GE Wide-Cabs owned by NS, I can live with having the main headlights in the nose, as most of my models are like that anyways. The only thing I can hardly wait for is for MLT to make Santa Fe C44-9W's and Chicago & NorthWestern C44-9W's and CNW AC4400CW's, because they got the ditch lights pilot-mounted below the anticlimber.As long as there are good models of SD40-2's in MSTS and in HO scale, I can be happy .

Actually the cabviews Sam Spade builds for us are supposed to be "Impressions of" and not actual photo quality renderings....
We originally did that for ease of operation as most of us like to run trains as opposed to look at them... Also early on we and everyone else in the freeware community were stuck in 2d as that was the original Kuju design...
there will probably be some improvements (for instance look at what we did for the sharks) but we probably won't do anything as dramatic as what is on the PacSurfliner Package or the SW1500 drawings just posted..... IMHO there are no good payware 3D GE cabs either....

Mousy,there is one issue that i think has been overlooked,The NS -9 has the "headlight" mounted above the cab windows,not in the nose like the BNSF unit.I already put a NS -9 using the dash9(bnsf) shape file together,and it looks ok,but again the headlight position isn't correct.As far as i know all the NS C40-9's had this headlight configuration?

Ok.That's more like it.Earlier during the summer Bill Hemb did comment that he and Dick Cowen were working on an NS SD70 spartan cab IIRC.I have seen or heard anything since.I guess Danny's model will be king until someone else produces one.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh East
