After cleaning up my TRAINSET folder, I realized that I needed some good NS C30-7s (now there's an oxymoron and a half!). My basic research got me noticing that the original NS C30-7s were former N&W C30-7s. I've found a couple of good shots over at railpictures.net and George Elwood's Fallen Flags site, but are there any other places out there to find good roster shots of N&W C30-7s? John Peterson's model is calling me. . . (BTW, don't tell Tim Hunter or Claude Debnam I'm looking for these. . . )

Ooooo Clayton you're a stinker man.I'll check my books and let you know something by PM.There are a few C30-7s in the library. They were numbered in the 8100 which is wrong. At least for the NS.C30-7s are 8000 series and the C36-7 are in the 8500 series on the NS.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastNS/N&W C30-7S – image 1

RE: NS/N&W C30-7s

Aha Clayton, caught you! An NS huh??? Good man. Now, the c30-7 is one of my all time favorite engines. I have one reskinned in my ARR livery because I like it so well. So if you do one, I will expect to get a copy of it!!! I mean if you don't want constant harassment if you don't!! See, Claude, I knew I would rub off on him! Hehehehe.....And you are definitely getting the right guys model to use for it too. That's the one I used. Anyway, in all seriousness, I would like to have a copy once you get it done. Hey Jake, thanks for that site. I wasn't even aware that existed. I may even try my hand at an NS here soon. I am going to watch the NS that roll by my house and pick a number out and do it, I think. I don't come on here often Clayton, but I never miss a post from you so you are caught red, or should I say, NS blackhanded!!!! Get on him too Claude!TimWestern Maryland

RE: NS/N&W C30-7s

Claude--I had those from the file library, but just got tired of looking at the incorrect stuff, so I deleted them just last night (which is what got me thinking about doing a new one myself.) Jake--Thanks for the site! That's what I needed! Hey, do you know if NS still uses the marker lights on the ex-CR units? CSX sometimes does, but I don't know about NS practices.SPSF--You're free to upload that to the file library if you want! I'll probably work on more "heritate" units (i.e. those NS units without ditchlights, plus N&W units) and may do Jake's requested unit (8107). Tim--Rats!! You caught me! The SD40-2 is my all-time favorite loco, but the C30-7 is my 2nd. Not sure why--must be it's ugly-factor. . .

NS has scrapped the use of marker lights. Most, if not all locomotives are now rid of them, including the ex-CR units which had red marker lights. IMO, units still in CR paint just don't look the same without the "beady red eyes".

ATF 1224 I'd forgotten about the ex CR units.Prior to the merger the NS didn't have 8100 series C30-7 units.Clayton I'll be waiting for your units to hit the files.SPSF can I try that unit? Check your PM.Claude Debnam NS Piedmont Division Raleigh EastNS/N&W C30-7S – image 7

Yeah, aren't those 81xx units C30-7As? Anybody know what the difference is, b/c I haven't a clue. Anyway, I should get a chance to work on these some tomorrow, so I'll post some progress shots as I get em.

RE: NS/N&W C30-7s

I believe that the main difference would be the C30-7As have 12-cylinder prime movers as opposed to the 16-cylinder prime mover in a standard C30-7. This difference would probably change the number/location of doors on the long hood.In addition, the C30-7As should be more fuel-efficient.Take care,Henry

RE: NS/N&W C30-7s

Kyle, I have seen a few of the ex-CR's go by my house here at night with the red marker lights working. Maybe it is just because this place is out of the mainstream of NS running but I have seen them still being used. Not much but every once in a while I will see one.TimWestern Maryland

Below is a VERY EARLY screen shot of a N&W C30-7 in the red/yellow scheme. What do you think of the red color? I don't know much about N&W, but it looks way off to me when compared to the real deal. <http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=46485>
<http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=46167>I got my color numbers from the 3DTrains color chart, but they still look off. Please just comment on the red color at this point--I know there's still LOTS of stuff to fix otherwise!

Jake, I have a question for you....sorry to jump into your thread Clayton, please forgive. Yesterday, I saw a couple of engines (Well, actually that is the problem I only got a glance at them after they were pulling away from me....the NS track is right across the street from me but I am up on hill a little ways away) on a five engine NS consist that had two engines (and they looked like D9's) that were painted with a white cab and a large white stripe on a black background for the body. I could see no markings anywhere, no numbers no logos, nothing. Was just wondering if you might be able to clue me in on what they could or might be? They looked very nice. I thought perhaps they were old CR units that were being repainted but if so why would the paint a white stripe down the side and the cab white? Have never seen this before. Just thought you might have a clue! Thanks.TimWestern Maryland

Clayton, I saw one of those cars go by a couple of days ago, not sure why unless they were carrying some NS bigwhigs around as the car looked brand new. Anyway, the color was definitely more maroon in color than what you have. Almost a brown with just a hint of red.
Almost like the color of a mahogany table if you know what I mean?!Definitely want it when you are done with it! Looking good so far.TimWestern Maryland

Hey Clayton,
Sorry to be slow - we are in the midst of finishing up the spring semester at school with a total of two tests this week and a final next week, so I have been pretty busy. I will try and get you another shape file as soon as I can. BTW, I think the file I sent you was actually the U36C and not the C30-7, but I have to check. The overall dimensions are the same, but the U36C has the "step" in the long hood right at the beginning of the cooling "wings" whereas the C30-7 has this step farther forward (around 6' or so). I hate to say it, but I may have accidentally lost the shape file for the C30-7 in a hard drive crash last year. Worst comes to worst, I might be able to restore it in gMAX and re-convert it. I will let you know something via email as soon as I can, dude! Highball!John D. Peterson

No problem, John! I just told Claude Debnam in an e-mail that you were either really busy or I had ticked you off by being so anal and picky about minor details. Glad it was the former (for my sake, anyway)! My wife is in the same boat, finishing up her last semester here. Take your time, I'm in no hurry. I just posted that silly "this project has been delayed" message as a light-hearted way of saying that this project wasn't "vaporware." I hope you didn't interpret it as a flame or slam or something. BTW, below are screens from Shape File Viewer of the .s you sent me with the paint from above. I love the super details you added with the plow/mus/etc. Let me know if you have any questions about the particulars I'm looking for. I really appreciate you going the extra mile for me--I'll try to make my skin reflect all the work you do to make the models superb! (And if I don't, you can always refuse upload! ) EDIT: I also told Claude that if I'd accidentally ticked you off, he may have to send you an e-mail to redeem me. You may get something from him anyway, just to cover my tail!

Haha! No problem at all, my friend. I just didn't want you to think I wasn't willing to work on it. Just have to bare with me a little longer! LOL! Got the last test of the semester turned in today and got two finals next week. What kinda crazy teacher gives a test one week before the finals?!?! Oh, I guess that would be my BIO103 teacher! LOL! I'll try to send you something this weekend if I can, Clayton! Take care!Highball!John D. Peterson

Hey Clayton,
Well, I have searched and searched and somehow I have managed to lose the TSM source file for the FLS version of the C30-7. Ughhh! But, the good news is that I have managed to reverse engineer the final model and get it in to GMAX, so hopefully, I can still make the changes we talked about! Take your time, John--I'm in no rush. My wife graduates this weekend anyway, so even if you had it done, I won't be able to work on it again for a little while. I appreciate you going to all the trouble, though! Just send me an e-mail when you get her all fixed up.
