As promised about a zillion years ago, I've finally finished my locomotive texturing tutorial. It should be suitable for both beginners and more experienced train-simmers.Please let me know if the the tutorial is any good and if changes or more info is needed. Thanks to James Hunt for kindly allowing me to use his model as the basis of this tutorial. You will need his SF SD45 #5346 model for this tutorial (you need to get it from the file library here) and it should come out similar to the pic below when you are done with it based on the information given in the tutorial.(The repainted model will be made available later this month).Regards:

Here's the same loco in MSTS. James did an excellent job with the model's specular lighting specifications on this one. The model will take quite a few different liveries quite well.

Excellent tutorial Sean. Congratulations on a fine job and for writing such a definitive explanation on a subject that can be bewildering at times to even the best re-skinners.

RE: New texturing tutorial ...

I think overall the texturing looks nice, but there are a couple of errors. The number on the side (8903) is too large when compared to the number on the side of the actual loco pictured on your site. Also, the CSX logo is too obscurred by the doors, etc, on you model (again, compare it to your picture). Finally, the door hatches on your model seem way too contrasted with the rest of the model--i.e. they stick out too much. Other than that, things look pretty good--thanks for creating the tutorial! (I've got to mess around with that SD45 some. . . )

Thank you for the catches, I've got them fixed now and have upgraded the download with the needed changes.I've added a credit line for you at the end of the tutorial by way of a thanks

RE: New texturing tutorial ...

I appreciate the courtesy, but you really didn't have to do that! I think you've got a great tutorial there for how it's done. I just happen to love the early/pre-CSX era, so don't mind me if I get a little anal. . .

>don't mind me if I get a little anal. . . You're very welcome, I always appreciate expert opinions. You're right about the CSX livery. When I was researching for a suitable livery to do for the tutorial, out of the dozens I looked at this one struck me from the onset as a "must do". It's a very simple and striking design, which should be easy for beginner to do and still be a challenge for the more experienced texture artists.Either way, you'll end up with a good model to add to any collection.

Sean, once again you have provided a much needed addition to MSTS.
Thanks for the great tutorial and I look forward to using it to get me started in re-skinning.

RE: New texturing tutorial ...

Thank you, Sean, you are the man! Reskinning to me has, up until now, been something akin to witchcraft and black magic - meaning I couldn't quite get the hang of it. I'd start reading through all the threads on the subject and before I got even a portion of the way through, I'd be completely lost and utterly confused.Your tutorial is a much needed addition to us novices and those of us who aren't well versed in using PSP or PaintShop. I'm not even halfway through it and already I can't wait to start creating my very own CSX version of MLT's new Dash 9.
Thank you for a very well written, concise, and detailed tutorial. It is exactly what a lot of us need.Take care -Larry Steiner

RE: New texturing tutorial ...

Thanks Sean for all the hard work that you did to get this out. Even though I have been reskinning for a while, it is nice to get a fresh perspective and some added information on techniques that I wasn't aware of.
Just wish you would have picked something other than a CSX. HeheheI am just baiting Clayton here. If there is anyone who knows the CSX it is Clayton so you got some good advice and glad you took it. I am looking forward to working on this (even though it is a CSX!!!!) Enough with the CSX already. Clayton, you still haven't sent me the ones you just did!!! I guess I am just going to have to become a CSX fan. I never thought I would ever say that. It is all your fault Clayton, and now you have Sean screwing my head up too!! Dang. Thanks again for the tutorial Sean. It is much needed and much appreciated believe me.TimWestern Maryland Railroad

RE: New texturing tutorial ...

I would say that Chris Denbow is the best "modern" CSX painter (and maybe the best CSX painter period). I'm by no means an expert repainter and some of my details (i.e. hatches, doors, etc) are no where near the best, but I try to get the paint scheme right, i.e. the lines match, the decals fit right, the numbers match the model (no SD40 numbers on an SD40-2, unless mentioned in the readme!), etc. But that has more to do with good research than good reskinning (which may be the one thing lacking from the tutorial). Anyway. . . Tim, I tried to send you those models, but the e-mails keep bouncing. Do you have an account that can handle 3+mb? I've got to rework the numberboards and I was told yesterday by my physical therapist that I need to spend less time at a desk (i.e. keeping my leg bent in a static state) and more time working on straightening/bending it, so that may cut down my skinning time for a while = delayed release.

"But that has more to do with good research than good reskinning (which may be the one thing lacking from the tutorial)."
"If there is anyone who knows the CSX it is Clayton so you got some good advice and glad you took it."
I think that these two are the most important points:

Research your topic well. Pay close attention to details (unlike me - *blush*). I did not get into Research at any great lengths as they are different way of doing this and it would have been too easy to go off topic.
Get a second opinion. Be prepared for some constructive critism and make use of some or all of the advice given. There's always someone who knows a little more than you do and their advice can be invaluable.
Thank You ... everyone for taking the time to review the tutorial and for the kind response.Very much appreciated, thanks.Regards:

Just a message for those Paint Shop Pro 7 and 8 users who think that they may have to get Photoshop in order to use and apply a cloud filter to your images.Try this one and it's FREE
http://www.geocities.com/murakuma/mmplugins.htmlDownload The Clouds 2.2 plug-in and extract with winzip into your Paint Shop Pro Plug-ins directory and away you go. I have both Paint shop Pro and Photoshop but this cloud filter smacks the pants of the one that comes standard with Photoshop as you can manipulate your results.
