SD50 Alpha Problem – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-04 AT 12:14 PM (EST)

I'm having a slight problem skinning Dick Cowen's New SD50, and I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with the alpha. as you can see in the attached photo, the black mapped to SD50-02.ace comes out alot darker than SD50-01.ace, even though it is in fact the exact same color when I did the skins. Is there any way to fix this? Thanks a bunch!

RE: SD50 Alpha Problem

Well you have been around long enough I suspect to know this is a problem in a lot of reskinning. Most builders are building for a specific model and not thinking of someone else taking it and reskinning it. Just a fact of life. My suggestion, and it won't be a simple task, but I have had to do it plenty of time, is to try different shades of black until you hit the right one. I know it is time consuming but for an example, I spent one entire week fixing one small area of the nose on a unit because of the way the shape file had it mapped to a section that was the wrong color. I ended up having to compromise but it still looked good enough for me and apparently many others by the amount of downloads.
You have to have a lot of patience and just keep trying to match the colors. Save the 01 ace to a targa file or bitmap, then load it into the opened 02 ace file you are working on. That way it will be easier to get the right match, as you will be able to see it right there in the paint program. If you are using psp you can split the windows and get a good chance to view it. I have had to do that on a lot of things besides colors. Lining up stripes, lettering, etc.Just a thought. Hope you can get it straight. Or you might email Dick and see how he mapped the ace files.Good luckRangerWestern Maryland Railroad

1. Its designed for skinning
2. Its a problem beause the locomotives shape is made up of two parts
3. 1 of the two parts has an alpha (therefore less colour depth) and the other has no alpha (therefore more colour depth)
