RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Hey, Neat Job!!! I was an engineer on BN1&2 when it still had that "new car" smell to it. One of the neat things was all the handrails were stainless steel (both outside and in the engine room) and the engine, believe it or not, was so clean you could cook eggs on it. The cab was fully updated with a new control stand similar to the sd40-2's and accompanying air brake stand. Of course, nothing but the best for our upper management, huh. Glad to see at least BNSF donated those units instead of giving them to the scrapper.

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Hey hi there, chazlee1, I think your just the one that Kevin the builder of this beautifull engine maybe looking for.
Kevin and I had a question about the oval plate just above the Burlington name on the side. What was written in that plate?
From what I could see on my HO scale decal set a R in the middle and what looked like a 6 on the right and some doodeling on the left, I guessed that it had the initials of the president of Burlington Northern in it, PRG, President Russell Grebbs. Was this right or totaly off the wall?
If you know, let Kevin know so that he can adjust it. Thanks

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Wow...that's a tough one! I believe (just an uneducated guess, as I just cannot remember the oval plate) it might have been PRK...maybe standing for President R. Krebs..I think he was pres during the rebuilds of those engines. Maybe someone else here might shed a little light on this also.

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Chaz-
Thats awesome you got to drive those engines...I have gotten a cab ride in BN-1 and I agree...it is VERY nice. They donated them to the Illinois Railway Museum a few years ago along with BN-3, another old BN E-9 and ATSF FP45 #92.
They run BN1 alot, sometimes with BN2 and BN3 occasionally. from what i understand ATSF 92 is in need of so much work it may never run again.
Im doing this project with the MASW, and it should be out late next week aling with BN-2.

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

What do BNSF use for their executive train now then? Hired locos from Amtrak? SDP40Fs or F45s?

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Thats a real good question....All the SDP40F's that were of ATSF lineage are all retired and gone. I think for their passenger trains they usually put SD70MAC('s) in the green/cream scheme...thats how ive seen photos, that or they use steam like MILW 261 every so often as well. I know BNSF doesnt run a lot of business/excursion trains like UP does cus if they did, theyd sure get a lot more publicity....too bad they dont have any huge steamers like UP's 3985. oh well!

Nice job on BN-1. I always wondered what happened to her. The only little crtique I have to make the F-9 sign on the side smaller and more narrow. Other than that, good job!Nick

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Hey Kel, ya, the cab is way different. Has an SD40 style control stand with a weird horn lever. If you guys would like more info on the release and about two sentences of backround knowledge, go to www.freewebs.com/klwtrainsim They will be either the first or second release by MASW. Reason we are doing them is because when Ken did BN1 and 2, they are of the 3dtrains v2.0 models, which not many people have anymore, so, we are using the v3.0 model as a base and as you can see, it's turning out pretty good.

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Hey John! Good to hear from you again!Nice looking BN1 there. You have done a nice job re-creating it with the pinstripes and all, and have came really close to how it actually looks. In fact, you even placed the headlites in the right position (Mars light vertical, and lower headlite horizontal.) Not many noticed that variation. I think the reason that they were arranged that way is because they were ex-NP units. Anyway, nice work and I will look forward to having them in my collection.

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

lol thanks...but john's not doing these engines, I am. im doing them as part of what me and john think of as promotional material to start getting attention to our new site, the MASW...link is above.
I didnt know Ken did these before...oh well now we have more.
The headlights and BN emblem were taken off photos, and if you look closely, you'll see i have the small strobe lights on there too....Im trying to make these engines as close to real as possible witht he exception of the horn...BN-1 has an S3K while the model has what appears to be a pair of A200s. oh well. we're including an S3K sound so it at least sounds right. The lighting will be redone so it is not so yellow...there will be a lot to look forward to with these engines! they will not disappoint!
It felt so good to be done with the Illinois Northern and then John slapped me with this project...will I ever get a break??? lol!
(btw...me and john were wondering...whatever happened to robert learmont (not that we miss him)?)
thanks for the feedback...the F9 plate along with about 2 or 3 other things are all going to be adjusted...thanks,

LAST EDITED ON Jan-17-04 AT 01:33 PM (EST)

sorry about that, Kev! (with old age, confusion reigns). Still, all in all, you are doing a beautiful job on it. Hope my input on that plate helps. As for Krebs, I think there are a lot of BN guys here that would like to take him for a ride in ol' No. 1, (maybe, one way?)LOL. Any ideas of a custom cabview using a F7 view with a SD40 control stand? I'm still a rookie at cabviews, so I don't know what that would entail.BTW: The Q SW1 is in Stew's hands at this moment; hopefully it won't be too long before it is ready, but I want to make sure Stew has time to check things out. Will post in my thread when it is ready to go.

Chaz-
thats a good idea about the cabview...I'll look into that for sure!
As for Krebbs...i know he was CEO of BNSF but i believe he's gone now...I think he left last year if Im correct (and thats a big IF!)Well I'll look into that cabview cus thats a really good idea...lol but I would like to get the BNSF ceo up in that cab and see how nice those engines run and put them back into service...yeah like that'll ever happen, right? They ride so well! Im thinking maybe I'll go to the IRM and make a cabview...but theyre not open until April, so we may be waiting awhile....maybe do full photo textures too!

RE: BN-1 almost ready to begin testing....take a look!

Hey Kev:Just had another thing I remember about BN1..it's horns were relocated to just behind the exhaust stacks; they did that to reduce the horn noise inside the cab...not sure how much problem it is to relocate them, and I think they were the 3 chime type.

I used to wish Krebs would keep these and re-paint them into the Santa Fe warbonnet scheme for the business train. This would have brought a lot of publicity to BNSF. Unfortunately, Krebs decided to do away with the warbonnet scheme. Too bad Anyway, thats a beautiful loco you have there and I await the finished product.BN-1 almost ready to begin testing… take a look! – image 11

You got it Kev. I'm not doin the repainting, in fact, I can't repaint to save my life! But! I will be including an all new S3K recording, maybe not directly from BN 1, but I have heard her horn enough times to know what she sounds like.
