Does anybody have a chart explaining the function of every icon inside a steam or diesel file?.. I have been trying to get a Monon engine to work, and I am at my personal technological capacity.. (Computers are not my forte, and my generation didn't even have them till I got out of college).I know I can't really use age as an excuse because I know there are still some retired engineers in here.... HHHEEEELLLLPPPPPPP??????? Thank you..Bob
Greetings, I am not sure if there is a chart about each icon within an engine/car folder, but basically what you find is: 1) .ace files are texture files. These give each unit its paint scheme 2) .sd file is used by MSTS to determine the basic shape of each unit, drawing a box around the unit for "contact" purposes (coupling, derailments, etc...) 3) .s file is the 3d model shape. This is what represents the model in question, whether it is an SD-40-2 or a boxcar. 4) .eng file is the "engine" or physics of the model. For locomotives it will tell the simulation how well the engine performs and will also tell the sim where lights are located, what color they are; exhaust location and how much; and other important features for specific engines. 5) .wag file is basically the same as an .eng file, except it is intended for rolling stock, non-powered stuff. Also there is a search option on the forums and you can look back through old posts and find a lot more info on these files, and ways to edit them. I would highly recommend this before trying to edit any of these files. The sim is very picky about files and one small error can crash the whole game. Another good tip that many will tell you, ALWAYS back up anything before you try editing any files. Simply copy and paste files into a temp folder, just incase something goes wrong. As for your particular problem, if you can give an idea of what is happening, it will help others to know what your problem is and offer better advice for correcting it. Hope this helps you and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Enjoy the day!Mykel EDIT: Seems I forgot 2 important files. 6) .cvf file is for the cab view. This is what you see when driving the engine in normal view. 7) .sms file is for sounds. This will bring your engine (or car) to life with lots of noises, from an idling engine to horns and bells. For locomotives, you will typically have 2 .sms files, one for sounds while outside the cab, and the other for sounds while inside the cab.If you do a search through the file library, you can find some excellent add-ons that will replace and be a great improvement over the default cabs and sounds. And I believe these come with instructions on how to properly replace the files so you can use them. All the above mentioned files are important, and if missing any may cause the sim to crash. There are programs you can download that will check files to make sure all is ok within a folder. One such program is ConBuilder. Highly recommended and will help you check folders to find problems.
Thank you!..I needed this really bad.Trying to get an engine to work and I needed to know why I was getting error messages, when I didn't know what they meant....
If you are trying to get the Monon F7's that are in the library to work, you will need Version 1.35 of the 3dtrains freeware model which can be found at www.aluminumcloud.com/msts_1.htm It's on the first page but you have to look real hard. John
