Re skining locomotives – image 1

Hello everyone, This is my first post, I am a long time user of the file library but have just in the last few days become interested in crerating my own equipment. I downloaded the TGA tool2 and have sucsessfully repainted the locomotive I was working on. The problem is that when I place it in the trainset folder I get two locomotives with the same name in the consist editor. In addition the new locomotive brings up errors in the game and will not load. I would like too keep the original locomotive as well as the new one. I know it must have somting to do with the .s .sd or .eng files but I don't know what to use to open them. If anyone could point me to a utility or somting I could use, that would be wonderfull. I would also like to thank everyone for the great collection of locomotives, rolling stock, and routes in the file library.Happy Rails

You have to rename YOUR .s .sd .eng files to all the same shortname (Ex: BNSFSD40-2) Then you have to open the .sd file and change shape line to the name you named the .s file. Then open the eng file and change the shape engine and wagonS lines to the name you named the files (note the S theres two of them.) Then change the name line to any name you wish.-NickCentral Illinois Locomotive Works Founder

Thanks , I thought that was somting to do with it. My only other question is what do I need to use to open them? Somting I read said you could use Notepad or Wordpad, I tried them and got nothing. If anyone knows of a program that will open them please let me know what it is and where I can get it, if its free.Happy Rails

Use wordpad to open the files. Click "File" and "Open", but before finding your file, click on the down arrow next to "Text Documents (*.txt)" and change it to "all files". Hope that helps.

The problem actualy seems to be that when the file is oppened I see no readable text or code of any kind, just moastly squares. I'm assuming that this is some type of file compression or a font theat my computer dose not have. The spacific files I am trying to edit are the .s files in Dick Cowen's GP9 re-skining kit available in the file library. I have sent an E mail to him but as of this time he has not responded.

Ok the files have all been re named and edited, I guess the .s files are not editable, someone told me that I needed to edit them too. I do however still have a problem. Everything runs fine in the consist editor no errors there, but in the in game locomotive selection my locomotive apears 3 times. No matter which of the 3 I choose the loading status bar only gets about 2/5 of the way across the screen. I get an error report message that dosn't tell me anything other than "would you like to send an error report to Microsoft" any Ideas on what could cause this. I am assuming it is somting in the .eng file. Thanks to all who have helped me so far,

I have discovered my error. When looking at a coppy of the original .eng file I realised I had accedentely deleted a line of code. This has provided me with a valuble lesson though, Make shure your files are correct before you spend all day re-painting an engine. I had fun doing this and hope to soon have a locomotive that looks good enough to upload to the file library.

RE: Re skining locomotives

The .s file is normally compressed and as such cannot be read or edited. If you need to open the .s to change the references to .ace files that you have renamed, then you need a program called Shape File Manager (sfm.zip in the library). This when installed gives you the ability to uncompress and compress these files. It is capable of more that just that though.

RE: Re skining locomotives

I've been using Dick Cowen's reskin kit and have finished a GP7, and the first of about 4 GP9's. It's working just fine for me. The first two locos are NKP415.ZIP & NKP509.ZIP (509 should be in the lib dated about the 23rd) I just uploaded it today.

RE: Re skining locomotives

One problem you may be having also,is when you open a file, make sure the file "properties" is set to "archives",and (not) "read-only",you won't be able to edit a "read-only" file.Re skining locomotives – image 9
