Aug-10-01, 05:03 PM (EST) 2. "RE: New Haven F7" The New Haven never owned F7's.However, the Connecticut DOT does (did?) run F7's that are painted in New Haven livery; your photo is an example of one of them in commuter train service. I've been trying to track down the details, as I was going to do an F7 repaint of the CDOT locos.I labelled today's upload as fictional because the number on it is from an FL9, not one of the CDOT F7's. There are also some differences in appearance from it and from the CDOT F7's. For example, the CDOT units do not have the round windows on the side, they do not have the large lower headlight but they do have a pair of ditch lights. The CDOT logo is also prominently visible near the rear of the unit.Hey, I told you I'd been researching this I suspect most other people would not have noticed this stuff.

Aug-11-01, 04:24 PM (EST) 6. "RE: New Haven F7" Nels, the correct designation was the FL9B A1A. New Haven had most converted to electric use on third rail lines or with overhead lines. From the encylopedia of modern locomotives" ....."General Motors FP-9 could be easily converted to work as an electric locomotive when required."Rich

Aug-12-01, 01:35 AM (EST) 7. "RE: New Haven F7" Rich, I grew up on the New Haven and that book is dead wrong, but it is a common error based on erroneous interpretation of some early pix! The "dual power" Engine that NH had was known as the GM FL9... It had a B+A1A Truck layout and the A1A was to support the weight of the steam generation and extra equipment for the DC Third rail powered internal electrical equipment. It normally ran on diesel but had 3rd rail shoes to allow it to run on DC power into and out of GCT. The first few had "mini pantographs" for the overhead suspended 3rd rail that GCT had over complex switch work. They didn't work out and were later removed. The direct successor to these engines is the P40 Genesis II Dual Power units... Unlike the FL9 these are reliable and don't catch fire in the 3rd rail equipment area... The FL9 was a beautiful Loco but problematic.... Its long life is probably attributable to their being no replacement for it until the advent of the GE Genesis dual power units.....
Hope This helps your under standing..... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-12-01, 05:40 PM (EST) 8. "RE: New Haven F7" What Chuck said I'm pretty familiar with these...got my copy of "Diesels to Park Avenue -- The FL-9 Story" sitting right here next to the computer. It's a pretty interesting story too...a special purpose electric-diesel/electric developed for commuter use into New York City, with the locos passing from New Haven to Penn Central to Conrail to Amtrak to Metro North and CDOT...They were also the last of the breed...the last F units built. And by the way the "L" in the name is for "lengthened" as they are longer than other F units. That B-A1A truck arrangement is pretty special too.And for anyone who doesn't know, that's an FL9 in the Train-Sim.Com logo.Oh, and I've got an official Microsoft Train Simulator tee shirt and whistle for anyone who can make me one...but it has to be the real thing, no doctored up F7.
