DO you think the 35ft Ore Car that is new in the library could be used for the ore car Penn Central and Conrail used in Northern Ohio? I`m not an expert on it but what do you think PC/CR guys?Chuck
I've never seen a CR ore car in person (all that ever ran on the Indianapolis Line was manifest freight and intermodal), but judging by the pictures I've seen it should be pretty close. At least it would be a good "stand-in" until an actual CR model is available.
I have the QNS&L-IOCC ore drawings for all three ore car versions used on that property. If anybody wants them, send the e-mail address, and I will forward in 4 separate files. This skeleton car by Teemu Vehkaoja is a close match dimensionally. The Conrail cars were built to a similar design. With the included TSM Project file, detail addition based on the drawings (handbrakes, ladders, and air brake equipment are very visible on this equipment)should not be too difficult. After that I will reskin for IOCC, which is the designation for all ore cars at QNS&L. See the in-game shot behind QNS&L power. 145-car ore trains are frame rate killers unless you lower the detail level in the sim, even with low-poly cars and a high-end system. I would not even attempt a 240-car distributed power train in MSTS, and I drove the things for years!!
I opened Teemu's Project File in TSM and dug up my e-copy of the ore car drawings as a template, and decided to go for it, since I know the equipment well and was contemplating doing the project anyway. Here is a progress shot, which took about 2 hours to do using Teemu's model as a base. Thanks, Teemu!! I will add bare details such as ribbing, dreanought ends, rotary dumper pusher pads, ladders, ore sampling platforms, handbrake and air brake equipment for the Marine Industries batch of cars, and build the original low side rebuilt hi-side modifieds afterwards, and post them all when finished. The original low-side version of the cars were also used by Kaiser Steel(Take note, all you SP types!). I will do the IOCC textures, and leave the other Canadian and U.S. road reskins up to the paint gang out there. These designs was built by Eastern Car in Trenton, N.S. by Paccar for Kaiser, and the modern ones by Marine Industries for QNS&L, CP, and CN
Update,The car has been redimensioned in line with the drawings. The MIL version comes first. You will be able to redo in Conrail colors (CP as well)as it is the same design and dimensions. I am starting to add details. To keep the poly count low, the secondary side ribbing will be textures only. When the whole thing is done, there will be two loaded versions (one with taconite pellets, the other with sintered ore concentrate) and one empty one, with 3 different IOCC road numbers.I will include the TSM project files in the upload. Remember, big trains have LOW FRAME RATES, and ALL ore trains are BIG TRAINS! See TSM progress shot.
