The EXE for TGA tool 2 won't work. It has to do with a problem on my computer, but I won't get into that. Is there any alternatives? I wann try my hand at repainting.JayTGA tool problem – image 1 TGA tool problem – image 2 http://www.freewebs.com/peterbiltsrule TGA tool problem – image 3 TGA tool problem – image 4Site now with new Message Board!

RE: TGA tool problem.

Not the best solution, but do you have a 2nd computer available? I have a video card issue with my good one that makes 'makeace' unable to run. I have an older, slower box that that I had networked and KVM'd to the fast one for other reasons, but it turns out that I can pass the '.ace' files to it for editting (no vid' card issues) and pull back for use.
This process could be done with floppies if you don't have network connections available. You'd need the file size to remain small enough for a single floppy, or use s'ware that knows how to split a file across two or more floppies. Clumsy, but it would work. But you need a 2nd pc for the above scenarios. A KVM switch at least keeps the keyboard, monitor, and mouse count down to one. BTW, these days USB ports would make this an easy connection.Lyle

RE: TGA tool problem.

Two reasons I can think of off the top of my head why an installation won't run, the exe that was downloaded is corrupt, obvious solution to that is try deleting it and download it again. The other possibility is anti-virus software, find out how to disable whatever firewalls/anti-virus might be thinking the install.exe is some kind of virus.

If you've got an ATI card (like me) and that's your "video card issue," there is a switch in the file library that makes turning off Direct Draw really simple. I made it a shortcut in my tool bar: TGA tool problem – image 10

I do have an ati card, but the script doesn't work on mine. It wants to edit a registry line that doesn't exist. I didn't install diredtdraw in the 1st place so it can't turn it off. I think I had read not to install it in regards to MSTS and didn't. Could be wrong on that. Maybe I should go back, reinstall, and then see what happens. I'm relunctant as I had to jump through hoops to get these WinME drivers installed in the 1st place (I'm a major detractor of WinME, gonna get rid of this piece-o-.... when I can). Directdraw is a prog' , so maybe I'll bite the big one and try. On the other hand, installing so I can disable it seems wrong.

RE: TGA tool problem.

Sniper. I have my defualt XP firewall off due to file sharing programs. Is there another one? and I have tried disabling Norton during installation to no sucess. What else should I turn off.I've also heard that XP has compatability issues with these type of installers, true? And someone suggested that I may have a corrupt DLL file.Clayton...I don't know much about video cards but the name of mine is a Nvidia GeForce MX 100/200, I think. Is that an ATI card or is ATI another company? I do have RivaTuner for my card though.Do I turn DirectDraw off?JayTGA tool problem – image 12 TGA tool problem – image 13 http://www.freewebs.com/peterbiltsrule TGA tool problem – image 14 TGA tool problem – image 15Site now with new Message Board!

Nope, FDL, you don't have an ATI card. Slyone- -MSTS requires DirectX8, and therefore uses Direct Draw regardless of whether or not you installed or didn't install it from somewhere else. My guess is you've got it installed and didn't know it (I think MSTS installs it, actually). I think it's MakeAce that doesn't cooperate with Direct Draw, so you only turn it off while working with MakeAce/TGATool2, but turn it back on while running MSTS (thus the little switch).

RE: TGA tool problem.

you're right ... as soon as I read the post I went ...DOHH!!!!! I went out of my way to get directx onto the machine. However, the key in the registry that the switch is trying to modify doesn't exist in my registry, the script line registryval.RegWrite "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DirectDraw\EmulationOnly", 0 ,"REG_DWORD"I don't have the line with directdraw references. I was thinking of directdraw when I said directX

RE: TGA tool problem.

FDL ,there is an alternative. I make repaints and don't
use TGA tool 2. The hard part will be explaining it clearly!
Here's how I do it.
Make a folder on your c drive .I call mine "skins",you can use any name that you like.
Make a copy of "makeace" , found in the UTILS directory in MSTS.
Place your copy of "makeace" in the "skins" folder.
Now you can begin. Go to the directory which has your bmp or tga
file and the corresponding ace file. Make a copy of the bmp or tga file and also the corresponding ace file.Paste both files into the "skins" folder.
Now you should have in the "skins" folder
makeace
yourskin.bmp or .tga ( for me its sd45e.bmp)
yourskin.ace ( sd45e.ace)Left click on the "start" button and click on "run".
A box should come up. In the box type. c:\skins\makeace.exe yourskin.bmp yourskin.ace
For my example it would be
c:\skins\makeace.exe sd45e.bmp sd45e.ace Now press "Enter" on the keyboard, and a black box should come
up for a couple of seconds and then vanish.
Now click on the ace file and make a copy.
Go to the folder where you first copied the bmp or tga file and
the ace file.Paste the ace file into the folder. A box will come
up asking if you want to overwrite the file. Press yes. That should do it.
Clear as mud I bet.

RE: TGA tool problem.

I think Martin also included a "makacewin", unless I got that from somewhere else.I might be missing something here, but everyone is talking as if the problem is TGAtool2.exe won't run on his system."I just wish I knew why my comp won't run these dang installation exe's. I just bought a MP3 cd player with music manager software but the cd wont install!"That sounds to me like he can't get TGAtool2 installed, and since he also mentioned another program that won't install, the problem has to be in firewall/installshield wizard, something to do with XP. The installer for TGAtool2, tgatl2.exe, is a winzip self extractor, so possibly XP is somehow interrupting that process. I've been using winzip for so long now I wasn't interested in XP's built in zip thing, so I changed the file association to winzip by selecting "open with", browsing to winzip.exe, and checking the box for "always use this program".I uninstalled Norton when I first got this computer, some of those blasted virus shields act like viruses themselves. I prefer to manually scan individual files before extracting rather than having a virus shield always running in the background anyway.

Maybe the "problem" is that TGATool2 doesn't have an installation exe, just a program exe. Maybe the original author is confused about what sort of file he's working with.

RE: TGA tool problem.

TgaTool2 has both. The "new" version is a self-extracting zip-exe combined with my own installer to let you browse to where you want to install it. Now I have fixed it it should also offer to create desktop and start menu shortcuts to TgaTool2The "old" version (still available) is just the program in a zip file (extract it to wherever you want to put the program. Make your own shortcuts).Neither should have any problem on any particular system.Except......there seems to be a trend towards XP machines organised so that there is no C: drive. This could potentially cause problems with installs that utilise the C: drive for temoporary storage. It`s possible that the winzip self-extractor is falling foul of this. It may also be affecting other installs. If this is the case (no C: drive) then you can use the XP Drive mapping functions to map C: to a folder on your HD.The other thing with XP is that for most installs you need to be logged on with Administrator rights. Either way you should be able to open up the install file (zip or exe) with WinZip and manually extract the contents to a folder.

Yeah, that's my thinking, double clicking on a winzip self extractor in 98SE makes it unzip itself regardless of whether winzip is installed on that computer or not. WinXP has its own zip utility, but since I installed winzip and made it the default I don't get XP popping up to screw up the zip files. I don't know about EXEs, never tried it on XP before installing winzip. I do still have something calling WinXP's zipper thingy, cuz when I single click on a zipfile in the left window that has subfolders it shows me the contents without unzipping it. Possibly reinstalling winzip might help.First thing is to confirm the actual problem tho, tgatl2.exe won't run or it does run and extracts TGAtool2.exe, then that won't run? One thing I noted, since the extractor works so quickly, you might think it didn't work, but run it again, this time pay attention to the install path. Then go to that folder and find TGAtool2.exe.BTW, thanks again, my brother did get his E:\ drive problems sorted out, and is happily vandalising his engines and wagons with TGAtool2 and PSP-8.

RE: TGA tool problem.

Yep
Winzip Self-extractors actually have "unzipping" code built into them so should extract regardless of whether you have any zip program installed. They should also bypass XP`s tendency to try to take zips and treat them as Folders as they just execute their own internal code without calling on Windows for any help. This makes them better than normal zips in a lot of ways for distributing stuff. The latest TgaTool2 self extractor *should* put a shortcut on the Desktop which would confirm that it has actually installed. As you say - the question is....is it the self-extractor or the program itself we are talking about here. A failure to install is one problem. A failure of the program itself is a different problem entirely.
