New GP38-2 – image 1

I just downloaded the new GP38-2 that appeared in the library today. Got it into skinnable format but am wondering why there are apparently two of the same maps made into .ace files:New GP38-2 – image 2I've desaturated them for my own reskinning purposes, but you get the idea. The one on the left has an alpha channel while the one on the right does not. It's obvious that they are turned 90 degrees of each other. Also, the one on the right appears to be mapped strangely with the fuel tank covering the bogies (which appear on a different map). Anyone know why and if both are needed? I'm assuming the one with the alpha channel is needed, but perhaps the other can be deleted. Surely the they didn't keep this skin purely for the fuel tank. . .

No, no, there are no SD40-2 trucks on the model. They just used the SD40-2 to make this model and used the same skins, etc. As I said in the first post, the trucks are on a totally different ace file. I guess I'll stick with my theory that this ace file is only used to map the fuel tank.

RE: New GP38-2

New GP38-2 – image 8

Hello Clayton! It's due to mapping limitations in TSM.The texture map you have to the left (GP38204.ace) maps the roof, walkway steps, and roof fans, while the one on the right (GP38201.ace), maps the sides, airtanks and gas tank. The reason for this is that TSM will not let you rotate a map on a model 90 degrees. Take for instance, if I tried to map the roof from GP38201.ace. It would end up showing the roof texture spanning the model from left to right, not front to back. Therefore, I was forced to rotate the actual texure 90 degrees, which, as you see, required a second texture file.I do hope that Mr. Sinclar does add the feature of rotating the mapping 90 degrees in the future (although I doubt it, emailing him does not good - you never recieve a response), as the current setup limits mapping extensively. I would use 3D Canvas, but I do not like the idea of modeling in a 3D enviroment, and GMAX is too complicated.I hope this clears up any confusion about the mapping!Take care!Kurt

Thanks, Kurt! I didn't put your name together with "the person who did the model" or I would have e-mailed you. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

I don't understand about not being able to map w/ TSM at 90 degrees. I believe the tutorial included w/ TSM shows how to do it when texturing the Diesel, Tutorial 3, Section 3. Or maybe, I don't understand what you are saying?

CMO: I hadn't looked at that section - true, it can be done in that fashion, but I consider it nonprofessional. To me, it sounds absurd to have to move the actual model to texture it correctly. The TSM manual says to texture a model like that, you should do the following:As you can see here, the cab is facing forward, it's correct direction:
New GP38-2 – image 12The tutorial says to move the object to be textured 90 degrees, like so:
New GP38-2 – image 13Then texture it, and restore it to it's original position.Personally, I would prefer a setup like the photo below.
Note: This is an edited photo, TSM does not have this feature!New GP38-2 – image 14ssw_96: I'm not sure exactly what type of horn it is, but I can give you a link to a .wav file of it, if you would like.yellowdog: No problem! Glad to be of service, anytime!Take care!Kurt

RE: New GP38-2

The reason I mentioned the procedure in TSM was because I just textured a seat in the Flag Stop that follows. Notice the black line in the seat to divide it into 2 boards. It looks like a triangular seat, and it is set at 45 degrees from the x and z axes. So, I simply went into TSM, selected the part, and then went to Transform|Rotate|Y - 45 degrees, then textrued the part, and then rotated it back -45 degrees. I though it worked pretty well, and sure was simple. (Don't judge the rest of the structure yet, I am still working on it).
Paul.

>The reason for this is that TSM will not let you rotate a map on a model 90 degrees.Just one more reason not to use TSM.>emailing him does not good - you never recieve a response...and another. Richard (3DC) has the best tech support in the industry IMHO.>I would use 3D Canvas, but I do not like the idea of modeling in a 3D enviromentOnce you get used to it, you'll wonder why you waited so long. True time saver, and you'll be kicking out models by the hour/day/week, instead of the week/month/year. Cheers!

Oh, noticed one thing - the locomotive lacks rear lights and FRED..
Have anyone successfully added this and would care to share the proper coordinates for them?

CMO: I'm not disputing the technique doesn't work - seems like it worked very well for you, but I would prefer the rotation feature on the window where the actual texturing process takes place. BTW, that flag stop looks like an item that would fit well with Seaview......TrainFreak: No chance of a texture edit - the original model was lost. I only was able to recover the actual trainsim model by digging up an old copy on my Geocities server. I don't know if anyone has put together a set of rear lights yet, but hopefully, someone will.Take care!Kurt

Kurt, I emailed you the QGRY files, and a request for the GP38.....it would also seem, that I would be in need of having the cab re-worked.....I don't have alpha capabilities, and I probably never will (the "ruler" of the computer deems no new software)

Hello John!Got the files - will try to have them done by tomorrow, however, I can't guarantee that they will be finished by then.I don't have the editing file for the GP38-2, however, I can add a smaller gas tank to it via the "FreightAnim" tag. It shouldn't be too hard to re-tint the default SD40-2 cab.....I'll do it for you when you finish the GP38s.Take care!Kurt
