Aug-05-01, 03:42 PM (EST) "My DD40 Modifications" Hi, I have posted and updated "mod" set of files for the Auran DD40 here... As soon as Nels vets them give it whirl and let me know what you think. Especially about the install since I am now using aliasing and I want to see if this will work in a distribution. I have either included the files you need or told you where to get them.... Maybe I can cut my 15meg downloads to 1 or 2 megs this way??????
The changes I made were in tweaking the Eng File for more prototypical performance. The mouse now works on all controlls. I Modified a GP38 cab to work with it including eliminating the Beacon reflection in the windshield and correcting the speed recorder to read above 80mph. The sound files I used were the SD40 ones posted in several places and I fixed the dynamic sounds to be louder and more GM. (KUJU swapped the GM and GE dynamics on us along with the air compressors. Must have been a hell of a party that day?)... I did forget to tell you to swap the aircompressors sounds between the Dash9 and the GP38 so you might want to do that just on general principles...
Enjoy and Please let me know what you think...
Chuck

Aug-05-01, 08:11 PM (EST) 3. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" BTW Thanks, I got some of the mods from examining your eng files and reading your posts here..... What I saw on this engine and several others is that everybody has one or more pieces but no one had yet put it all in one package.... I hope I have succeeded here.... Aug-06-01, 09:31 AM (EST) 7. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" Here is consist file based on the K Train activity previously loaded here.... It is 2 DD40s and 54 Intermodal Cars... Works great on the NEC and after a mile or two gets the speed up to the 70mph freight limit... I haven't tried it on Marias yet! I would recommend that you don't try this with Auran ENG files! I guess cause its Freeware they have castrated the DD40s performance.... Works fine with My ENG file....

Aug-06-01, 11:30 AM (EST) 9. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" Hi Chuck,
I think they just had the mumps during that 4th grade lesson on how to read information in a reference book? The information was in the book correctly, they just didn't use as directed. I really think whoever made the file didn't understand anything about locomotive physics. Great art work though!

Aug-15-01, 00:53 AM (EST) 11. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-01 AT 00:57 AM (EST)Hello gentlemen, Thanks for the DD40 update. It works and sounds much better, but I still don't like it.I too have tried tweaking the ENG files to make them perform better, but I have given up on the physics of MTS - it is not what I call a simulation. The maximum continuous tractive effort of a DD40 was indeed around 88kN @ 90mph, just as Planet Auran's ENG file suggests so I suspect it is more a problem with "Train Simulator" (I use the term loosely!), than mumps and use of the reference material. The updated DD40 ENG file suggests that 515kN is available at 90mph, which is really quite a stretch!! Another thing that behaves quite unlike any loco I have worked on is the braking - the rate of application and release with a 50 car train attached is as though you are running light!!!Does anyone know a way to improve this? Does anyone know why the physics are so poor in general? I really think the level of simulation was intentionally degraded for some reason - maybe for mass market appeal I don't know, but as a railroad man I am quite disappointed. Thanks Big Dave

Aug-15-01, 01:54 AM (EST) 12. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" I don't have the document to examine as to how the info was writen up, but the 515 kN Maximum Continous Tractive Effort was achieved at about 12-15 mph. The CTE drops as speed increases. The 88 kN while a valid measure of CTE at maximum speed is NOT the Maximum CTE!! I don't care how someone refered to the change, the program is using the value of 515 kN at the correct speed unless the value of "DieselEngineSpeedOfMaxTractiveEffort" was changed to 90 mph, which would be absurd.

Aug-15-01, 09:15 AM (EST) 13. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" Thanks Bob,
sorry, my mistake, I was looking at the wrong file.
Let me say that I meant no slight toward your DD40
mods, I am in favour of it.Big Dave

Aug-15-01, 12:20 PM (EST) 14. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" Although I researched some of the data, the mods are by Chuck.
Glad we got everything all clear and we can all enjoy these trains!

Aug-18-01, 04:50 PM (EST) 16. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" Thanks Bob.... The 515 is in fact the Max T/e which as Bob noted is available "way down low".... "Continuously" without the Amp Meter being in the Red.... The short time is 605kN. But that is definately with the "meter in the red" and as you well know is time limited (they ought to model Traction Motor "overheats" too)....... The real problem is the way KuJu/MS modeled the physics..... Auran assumed that the max T/E was 80kN or so and ignored the fact that number is at 90mph as Bob said.... the Tractive Effort Curve is just that and is a graph with speed going up one side and kN accross the base.... Also there would be a seperate curve for the "short time ratings" especially for Electric "Motors", which can some times almost double their T/E rating while in "short time mode"......
We works with what we get..... Maybe in ver 2 they will update/revise their physics.... After all that is what they did with every Flight Simulator.... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-18-01, 04:52 PM (EST) 17. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" FWIW, Also track grades and rolling stock physics are not very accurate either.... So I tend to be a little "fat" sometimes on some of my eng files in order to compensate..... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Aug-18-01, 02:24 PM (EST) 15. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-01 AT 02:29 PM (EST)For more relistic roll restistance (for cars and engines)you might try to take a look at MSTS Friction Calculator by Joseph T. Realmuto.
He includes a caculator program that will compute the restistance for all rolling stock as well as complete replacement for MSTS default cars and engines of the WAG files. If you want to better undersand how this works take the time to read the docs.Don

Aug-19-01, 04:46 PM (EST) 18. "RE: My DD40 Modifications" I would love to Don... The problem is I can't assume every one will put those changes in. I am already getting questions from a few people who are having trouble installing, even a complete archive.... I'm afraid to open the flood gates this early... especially since this is a hobby and not my job.... I'm sure that they guys who know how are already busy at work redoing all their rolling stock physics as we speak... Those same people are easily capable of modifying ENG files, many are much better at it than me..... When I get some more time I may start to assemble "premier quality sets" with realistic numbers on everything but right now I don't have enough time.... And I think it is almost too early in the product cycle.... I'm betting MS/KuJu will release a Service Pack for this within the next 6 months..... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
