I have checked here and a few other sites, and have not seen any GP7/9's in the B&O Black/Grey/Blue paint. Has anyone seen one of these for MSTS (either freeware repaint or payware?)Thanks.Duane Rezac

Any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey, blue? – image 3 might depict what your're referring to. I don't think anybody's done this, freeware or payware. There are some F and E models in these colors but, to my knowledge, no geeps.EDIT: From the FallnFlags website, of course.

Hey, ceeanoh man! Hell yes you ought to!BTW, dadbill, looks like all the geeps in this scheme depicted on George's site are set up long-hood-forward, and most road numbers are in the 3400's.

Geez, do we want to get that in-depth? There isn't a way to make an engine long hood forward in the eng file unless you change all the coordinates around. Maybe just run it reversed. Maybe in MSTS2...

RE: any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey,blue?

Actually it's no problem, dadbill. You just need the shape file manager utility in the file library, by Paul Gausden, mod by Okrasa Ghia. This utility allows you to rotate an .s file 180 degrees in seconds. You have to uncompress the .s file first (you may have to use Route_Riter or another utility for that part, because for some reason I've been unsuccessful in uncompressing the .s file in sfm itself, though it has that feature). And afterward you may have to adjust the position of the locomotive lights. As you probably know, this is done in the .eng file, not the .s file. You look at the reversed loco in the game, and if the light positions need changed, you open the .eng in wordpad and find the lines for the light locations. The first number series is lateral location, the second is vertical and the third is longitudinal. If the headlight(s) are out in front of the loco, for example, you need to change the longitudinal call. You have to experiment. If the location is 7.233, try changing it to 7.213, and see how much it moves. You can move the lights forward and back, up and down and away from centerline this way. You have to change each light individually. I searched for months for a way to change to prototypical long-hood operations on some favorite models; Paul Gausden's utility is cool beans in my book, and I credit enocell for the helpful steer to it. Another useful tidbit: some locos with over-and-under headlights have a severe flicker (can't recall the technical name for this phenomenon), which can sometimes be solved by moving either the top or bottom light forward or backward of the other by about .002 or .003 units, which gets the lights in different vertical planes. I've even "buried" redundant headlights within the loco bodywork on E-units that were supposed to be single-headlight models.BTW, you're one of my favorite repainters. Hope I'm not showing my rear by trying to tell you a bunch of stuff you already know! And if you like, I'd be glad to do the shape file rotation and lights mod.Oh yeah, one problem with reversing a model: the engineer's seat ends up facing the wrong way on the wrong side, of course! I'd like to see someone come up with a fix for that.

That really is a good looking paint scheme; kind of wish Maple Leaf Tracks had included examples of it in their B&O Heritage pack. Hope you can find time for it. Another thing about shape file manager: you can reverse trailing units to make their trucks swivel in the right direction.

RE: any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey,blue?

That's the one - I'll check out the heritage pack. about 10 -15 years or so ago I saw one in operation near lancaster Ohio on the Indiana and Ohio - They frequently purchase used motive power, and it usualy stays in it's original paint for a while - they don't seem to be in too much of a hurry to re-paint. It just shows that you can run whatever paint you want and be just like the real railroad...thanks.

Shouldn't the grey stripe at the top be more grey. It has a lot of blue in it. I think the original units were more of a lighter grey much like the E units I've seen for earlier. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Wow, that's great help. Yes I noticed that too and I fixed the grey last night. What I couldn't tell was the black at the top, I couldn't tell if it was blue or black from most of the pictures there. I will make the corrections and adjustments and get another progress shot off as soon as I'm done...

Man, those colors are subtle, aren't they? It's tempting to yell "bring it on!" But Steve mentioned the gray having too much blue, and I believe he's right - in fact, it still looks a bit violet compared to the pix.

(edit) I dunno, I was going on the colors in the picture in #2, and I like the colors in #24 better... Tell you what- the grey looks more grey and not so violet in the sim, it looks grey!!

Any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey, blue? – image 13Here's another wrinkle. The gray or violet band, whichever it is, definitely looks gray here, in what admittedly isn't a great picture; and there's a narrow band above it, where other versions have dark blue, that looks violet! Or mauve! Or ... hey, wait a minute, I think it's time to stop and watch some arena football. Next we'll be rushing out to a shoe sale.Seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if any or all the variations you've experimented with would represent the model very well within a range of fading, wear, dirt and light conditions. You might have to choose between what you objectively judge to be prototypical and what just looks better.

Having seen the actual unit at the B&O railroad museum and having an HO model of it myself, it is grey and a lighter shade at that on the band, the blue and the rest of the paint job of course is just as dadbill has it.

I'd say "743" in the middle shot is closest to prototype. Are all three the same color, or is the variation due to lighting differences?

RE: any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey,blue?

It looks great to me.Interesting, that all the photo's I've seen posted here from the fallen flags site are with the extended fuel tank with the air tanks on top and no dynamic brakes - the one I saw several years ago (and the athern model) had dynamic brakes and the air tanks next to the fuel tank. I wonder what most of the prototypes were?Hard to belive all this came just from a question if anyone had seen one for MSTS....

I suspect that the ones with no dynamic brakes and the air tanks on top were for passenger service. The air tanks are on top to make room for an extended fuel tank. With the standard tank the air tanks were mounted crossways next to the tank.
By the way, I found this interesting site for rail pictures:http://www.railpictures.net/you can search by railroad/locomotive type..

RE: any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey,blue?

I replaced a couple of sw1500's on one of the Ohio Rail Activities with the gp7s and gave them a try last night - they're working great. One strange thing happened (I think it's just a MSTS quirk) - the first time I ran one, the smoke came out of the air intakes in front of the cab!!, but after re-starting MSTS, the smoke was in the correct place every time. I have reached the point with Microsoft that I'm supprised when things work right (I am a programmer and work with low-level windows programming, and it's just as bad as train-sim in parts..) This is the first time I have used the newview cabs (I had to install it along with the gp's), and I think I may have done something wrong. The cab's animated controls don't sync up with the rest of the cab graphics ( needles float near but on on the dials, throttle controls misplaced).Any thoughts on what I may have done wrong? I installed both the newview and newview2 downloads. I suspect that I may not have something installed that is needed for the cab views. Thanks - the gp's are great. That paint job has always been my favorite.

RE: any GP7/9's in B&O Black, grey,blue?

Okay If you used my newview, it has to be installed in the default gp38 cabview folder. Just follow the instructions in the newview readme. The smoke coming out of the windows was mine. I set it up that way to take that smokin' shot on the 'torpedo run' post, and I forgot to change the file back. however, if you run either batch file in the 743 folder it will fix this permanently!

Okay, I believe what you have there is a Bessemer & Lake Erie, B&O purchased the units as an attempt to beef up their fleet around 1961, rather than repainting, they mearly painted over their logo. These units were eventually traded in for new GP38s and 40s near the end of the sixties. Oops! Early seventies!
