RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

Alpha'ing them out is easy on the TA model. Here's what you do (you may actually have done some of this already): 1) Send the image to your editor using TGATool2
2) Send the alpha channel to your editor using TGATool2
3) Create a new channel on the RGB image (which will be called the alpha channel)
4) Cut the "alpha channel (i.e. the black and white image)" and paste it into the new channel (alpha channel) on RGB image file
5) Save the RGB image file as a Targa (*.tga)
6) Select the RGB channel
7) Select your rectangular marquee tool
8) Use the marquee tool and create a box to highlight the ditchlight area on the RGB image
9) With the ditchlight area highlighted, click to switch over to the alpha channel
10) With the ditchlight area highlighted, select the paint bucket tool
11) With the ditchlight area highlighted and the paint bucket tool selected, color the highlighted area black
12) Switch back to the RBG channel
13) Save the targa
14) Convert tga to ace with TGATool2
15) Remove the ditchlights section(s) of the eng fileViola, ditchlights gone. If you get "ghost ditchlights," select the ditchlight area on the RGB channel with the rectangular marquee and black out that area on the RGB channel too.

Whoah. Norfolk & Western motive power. Cue the footage of me drooling like Homer Simpson. I'll start looking right away for some other stuff, but here's what I found at railpictures:N&W SD40 #1608:
railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=13514N&W SD40 #1604:
railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=2142Add 'www' if necessary. The side rails on those appear to be solid black. From the looks of it, the 'NW' logo goes on the nose; since they were in the habit of running the hood forward from time to time, it might do to have it on the "rear" of the thing as well. Couldn't talk you into making one of them a hood forward, could I?Thanks for the N&W effort!

Don, they look great. It's funny, because I'm working on N&W SD40-2's # 1638 (spelled out), 1649 (NW logo) and 6085 (NW logo) to release with my upcoming N&W cabeese. Nobody's released N&W motive power for a while, and now we both have SD40-2's goin on. Chris Denbow - Baltimore, MD

Don,If you haven't heard back from John, then he's probably out on the road (he's a conductor with NS), but I'd say go for it. As long as you credit him, I've never known him to have issues.I'd upload your NW units. I always say, the more, the merrier. Just look at all the CSX reskins that Phil Andre and I have done of the same stuff. As far as the ditchlights, I have no idea about the TA model. I use Justin Cornell's SD40-2 model. I don't think I've ever even seen the .ace files for the TA model. And as for the Chessie stuff, go for it. I've done a few (with more in the works, that have been about 85% finished since about January) wearing CSX numbers, and planned on eventually going back and giving them Chessie numbers and ownership, but who knows if and when I'll ever get around to re-Chessie-ing them.

RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

The only other thing I can think of is that for the SCL units, the headlight would probably be in the nose. I can't find info to confirm this 100%, though. The paint jobs look great, though!

RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

Hi Clayton, actually i have pics of some sd40 units, and they have headlights in the "nose" and above the windshield, and since these are fictional,i decided to go with the "above the windshield version" I'm not quite sure if there is a shape file avaliable for both?...Is there?Any idea of the arrangement on "KCS" units? Thanks

RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

Yep, headlight in the nose, gyralight in the top. Talk to Kellie Ellison about these- -he's a gyralight whiz! Once again, this is all about alpha channels. On the TA SD40-2 model, you can alpha out the headlight in the top, or the one in the nose, or both, or neither. I'd recommend keeping the one in the nose alpha'ed out, though, since SCL didn't use the same sort of nose configuration depicted by the TA SD40-2. Just paint one on in the spot on the nose, light her up, and you'll be sent!

RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

That's a great-looking paint job there. Very impressive! I think you'll find that number's been taken though on the SCL roster - by an SD45-2. Maybe #2220 onwards would be ok because I don't think these were taken, #2213 being a C630 (last # on my lists).I'm working on an SCL U36C at the mo, but it will need a few physical alts before release.Cheers

RE: SD40-2...Re-paints

I know the SCL had SD35s.Anyone considered doing a repaint or building this model. The Maple Leaf SD35 or the Dekosoft SD35 would make nice candidates.Anyone willing to give it a go? The SD35s were numbered in the 1900s if I'm not mistaken.
