Well as many of you know, I have gotten back to thehang of repaints, My last one, the Conrail SD9, Was good, But one thing bothered me.. The doors could have been a tad better. With Quality stuck in my head and a urge to improve my self, I tinkered around and see what I could improve, and here's the results, Letter A is the old style doors I did, Letter B is the new style, Please, Tell me what you think of this changeBetter Door's? "A" might be better for a weathered version while "B" might be better for a newer version. That's the way I've usually done repaints of Marc Nelson's GP9 doors, too.

Shawn"B" is definitely the way to go. You need that "pop" that the lighter colour provides to make it look more than just lines on a flat surface.- Andrew

I would have to say that "B" gives a more 3-dimensional appearance. One thing that I can see, though, is that the louvers look indented on "B". You might try flipping them or mirroring them to see what that will do.Otherwise, looking good!Henry

LAST EDITED ON Mar-26-03 AT 08:22 PM (EDT)

Hey Shawn,The effect of extended metal parts needs to be set in the real world shadow and light...for believable effect....the sunken metal parts of your example are fine because the light comming from the upper left would reflect correctly on them as you show....however the light on metal that protrudes from the object (or has the appearance of protrusion) needs to be lighted in the opposite way so that the light would reflect from the top and left side of the protruding object for realistic effect. I have amended your example with the correct lighting appearance on the upper louver and left the lower as you had it so you can see the differences....I hope this is helpful.Rick
