I wonder why nobody has made any Norfolk Southern covered hoppers yet? The ADM, Cargill, CSX, ect all look really good. Ribbed side and rounded side, but NS has tons of these cars. Heres a few pics of cars I'm talking about.... , also need some CSYX ( Central Soya ) cars. (note: CSYX car photo not taken by me, others are mine)

Have you visited this site yet?http://www.alabamarailfan.com/msts/cars.phpThe CSX Grain Express car has already been done. AND he has blank skins for the ACF CenterFlow(tm) 2 - 3 and 4 bay hoppers available too.Hope this helps. Some nice photos BTW. Where were they taken if I may ask (a couple remind me of rural northwestern Ohio).Dave Mikulec (dmikulec@bellsouth.net)

Those arent NS grain hoppers. They are the plastic pellet hoppers cause I see them everyday going to the Donora plastic plant with a few tankers followed by a Conrail U-Boat.

RE: Norfolk Southern grain hoppers?? pics of kind w

Hate to burst your bubble marcus, but not one of those are plastic pellet cars. I work for NS and plastic pellet cars having pipe looking attachments on each end of the bays underneath for unloading, since they are unloaded through vacuum tubes and blew into silos. Grain cars do look simular, but they have a sliding hatch door to unload with, pellt cars do not, and they are also a longer car than a grain car. And, those picts were taken in NC. Most were taken sitting at the "feed mill" (not plastic transfer facility...lol) where they were being unloaded, and the others were taken on the road while being hauled back to the interchange with NS from the shortline.

Yeah, it's hard to tell from a distance. Just by the bays, otherwise they all look the same.

But the ones I see are most definately Plastic Pellet hoppers. Cause there are no grain plants near.

CSX Grain Express Trinity Cars

LAST EDITED ON Jan-27-03 AT 11:06 AM (EST)

I'd like to see this one re-done myself. The one that was already made was done as a four-bay ACF Center Flow. However, all of the prototypes (such as the one in the photo) are three-bay Trinity hoppers. Contrary to what the round sides may lead you to believe, these Trinity cars are not Center Flows. Structurally, they have more in common with the ribside cars than with Center Flows; you can see the center sill running through the bays.Other owners of similar/identical Trinity cars:
BNSF (the default BNSF grain hopper was a half-a**ed attempt at one of these)NS (no lettering or logos, just reporting marks; I beleive these may have been purchased second-hand)
Edit: In one of the photo above, NS 294139 is one of these; the one with the logo (292734) is a Thrall car, which is a true center-flow design.Dakota, Minnesota, and Eastern (I've seen these in both gray and yellow color schemes)Cargill (CGEX and CGOX)Staley (STLX, no logos)Southern Illinois Railcar (SIRX, most with logos)This probably isn't an exhaustive list; if anyone decides to build one of these, there will be a lot of paint-ups to do!

They do look really good, I will get you more pics as well. Really like your work. Also, I am still trying for the ADM car, been really busy at work this week so far, 12-13 hr days. Yes NS does have Big John cars, heres 2 pics. I didn't take either but I see these cars alot at work. Theres 2 versions, one was Southern's version...I don't really care for it and then the modern version. The Sou version is on the car that has the badly faded and dirty paint. It's in the corner on the left.
