They are not like the real railroads. The front classification lights are either white or green, depending on what follows, but are red only to the rear.
Howdy, If I am correct, I did those originally. I had them (or ones like it) set up to be prototypical, and only be on if the unit was in a trail, or pusher position. CMO is correct, red is to be shown to the rear, or in an emergency ONLY. That being said, Pete Willard says he sees the ex-CR units on the old CSX with them on all the time. I pity the crews if the FRA shows up! The hogger will either get fined, or removed from service for a little "vacation," or BOTH. So it is up to you. It looks cool, I will give you that, but it is against the rules, and is taboo on the railroads. You don't want your virtual engineer's card revoked do you??Take care!Kelley D. Ellison
Hey Pete, OK, my bust! I musta missunderstood J. R. when he told me that. If you seen them on in the rear of the train, it is correct! The CR red "bug eyes" were added to many locos AFTER the use of class lights had been abolished. The only aspect you could have WAS the red!Although I did see a CR Streator connection train in 1997 at Galesburgh (Yost actually) with the lead SD40-2 displaying white lights from the original EMD installed class lights!! Even though it was a fau pax, It made me MISS the days of real class lights! THanks!!Kelley D. Ellison
>They are not like the real railroads. The front >classification lights are either white or green, depending >on what follows, but are red only to the rear. Not true. I see ex-Conrail widecabs on CSX all the time with red class lights on the nose. I've seen them lit from time to time, and are really wild looking on dark, foggy nights. Bugeyes! Yes you are right about mostly used in the Rear of the Train But I have seen only a few with the red light on in the front in Charleston WV I have a few pic of that I will try and scan..Thats why I edited the file a bit
The red classification lights were equipped on almost every Conrail locomotive besides those inheirited from previous roads in other words, Conrail specified these lights to be installed on locos they ordered. NS is slowly removing the classification lights from their former Conrail units (what they are hurting on the units, I will never know) often times just ripping out the light fixtures, leaving two empty holes. In my opinion it looks like a human skull with no eyes as classification lights were what made Conrail locomotives even more enjoyable to see.

>(what they are hurting on the units, I will never know)If the equipment is installed it has to be in working condition. In theory if one of the red marker lights was burned out or otherwise inoperative the unit would be bad-ordered. Unused equipment is often removed to avoid having to maintain it.Conn McCarthy
