USRA Consolidation - Seabord AirLine RR 2-8-0 #905 07-17-02Model and textures by Clifford Timm Repaint to SAL by Chris Noble Engine tuning by Chris LeeI've come upon a stumbling block. There's only one texture file for both sides of the cab, and I assume it has been mapped as flipped somehow. I've not yet mapped a 3D shape so don't know it that's an option. The left side (facing front) is correct (sorry it's dark). The right side is *partially* correct, and that's what has me stumped. You see the number is correct but the SAL Herald isn't. There was an alpha channel missing from Mr. Nobel's repaint download and that's been replaced with an identical one from Cliffords original (Erie). All is good in that department now.But as for the flipped herald, am I skunked here? I suspect I am.Mike
When I originally mapped the cab, I didn't expect any text to be used in the upper half of the cab, so I mirrored the texture to save space on the texture. With the original .s file, you will not be able to add the herald without one side being mirrored. I feel bad that you went to the trouble to edit the texture only to have it not work, so I edited the mesh to allow your herald to appear correctly. The window is still mirrored because it has to be to look right, but the area in front of the window is now a seperate mesh area with unmirrored mapping. The texture you have now should work without any modification hopefully.Download the revised consol.s here, and replace the old one. http://users.erols.com/true2scale/consol.sI haven't kept track of all the repaints of this loco, but if any of them involved adding more windows to the cab, this new .s file might cause problems with those schemes. If you only use this .s file for your reapint and keep the old .s file for all your existing versions of the consol, there should be no problems.Good luck with the repaint, looks good so far.Cliff
hello, Cliff, long time no post? i know you already posted once a while back but this is my welcome to you back to the forums here. i'm gonna be making 3 versions of the sd60 as soon as i get my grades up in a few classes here at college. using 3dc pro. Hauling America one pixel at a time Bill Hemb train sim repainter, 3d modeler Ah, the country's going down the tubes. What Tubes? I don't see any tubes.-George Carlin
Thanks Bill, I've been keeping up with the board since the beginning, but haven't been very active making anything for the Sim lately. I just uploaded a repaint of John's CR SD40-2, so I'm not entirely out of the loop.Good luck on the SD60, creating 3d stuff is very satisfying.Cliff
Cliff,That was so good of you to respond to my post both in reply and with something to fix my dead-end! How very nice.Lately, I've become attracted to the SAL history and wanted a proper engine for that wonderful Heavy passenger consist enocell recently uploaded. It inspired me to purchase the SAL font intent on lettering the batch.I'll head straightaway for your download with many thanks in advance for the work you did. I understand your comments about windows and the caveat of applying the shape to other repaints of your engine. I'll be careful.EDIT: It works great Cliff! Thank you.Cheers!MikeA
I am not certain that the Seaboard used the unique font on anything but lightweight passenger cars. The heavyweights probably used old railroad roman, at least until a few were modernized. Need to check some Seaboard picture books.
Thanks for commenting. My research so far shows that indeed Railroad Roman was the early font, and I have no record of when (what year) the proprietary font began appearing.I also cannot credit or date this photo, but it implies the font was indeed applied to heav passengers and has been around. If I were to guess, I'd it looks like a late 40s early 50s font, designed for readability at speed (note the double-spaces between letters). All the SAL Baldwin Mountain loco photos I have found so far are strictly Railroad Roman. Later ones, carry a small "S.A.L. R.R." beneath the number--also in Railroad Roman.SAL owned 71 "Mountains." The first numbered "200" was delivered in 1914, the last, #270 was delivered in 1926. All were 4-8-2s and all were Railroad Roman lettered. It's safe to assume in those years the coaches were also bedecked in Railroad Roman.I am grateful to fallen-flags.org for much of what I've learned so far, and I'm not nearly finished yet.MikeA
