Being a total newbie in this realm, what will I need to do to go ahead and upload some of this stuff that I've been painting? Is it common to just upload the engine and let the end user fend for themselves on a cabview, sound, etc? (I use cabviews created by others.) Should I upload the .eng file with aliasing for the default GP38 cvf and sound?Who all has to be recognized in the repaint readme's? For example, my GP7 repaints started off as a 3DTrains demo that was first repainted by Clayton Notgrass into a Clinchfield Geep, and then repainted by me into a Frisco geep! (The first Frisco one anyway!)My Mop geeps have customized horns to sound appropriate for the Mop... should I upload the sound folder with them?Any input from experienced skinners in good standing with the sim community would be much appreciated! So much to learn...Andre "Coonskin" Ming

Packaging for Upload – image 2

first make sure yoy have marcs permisson to upload. alias the gp38 cabview and sound. and yes if your mopac geeps have 1 custom horn you must alias all the gp38 sound files expect the horn. but the .sms files that have the sound aliasing in them and put them in the sound folder put your mopac horns in the sound folder you MUST alias all the .ace files. start with a copy of the gp38 .cvf file and alias all the .ace files, exple "GP38Right.ace" becomes "..\\..\\GP38\\Cabview\\GP38Right.ace".greetings from atspw

RE: Packaging for Upload

Hi Andre, You could go either way on the upload including cab's and sounds, want to make sure to read the cabview and sound doc's because I suppose an author of those may not want them to be included in another authors files. You can upload without the cab and sound but denote in your read me you prepare what cab and sound file you use from the library.
I know the default GP38 sound file is used for a lot of diesel locos more or less for the simplicity of installing the loco to get it up and running without much fiddleing of ammending the loco installation. Your read me has to include the origional author of the model and any other acknowledgements to the model others may have contributed to in the makeing of the model, and of course your name as the repainter!, The read me needs install instructions with any notes you feel necessary to include. Probably the easiest thing to do is look at the read me for the locomotive you've repainted and use it as your guide in makeing up your version, the existing read me should allready have all the required info in it, you just basically need to change the info on the cab's and sound files to suit your upload configuration and you as it's repaint author. If the horns are your creation theres no big thing to that, but if you used a existing horn sound file and made changes to pitch and note of the sound you may have to seek permission from whomever created that sound file to include it in modified form with your upload. Sounds like a lot to do in preparation of the read me file, but it's not that bad, these are the criteria I follow in the repaints I have done in the past. Take care, John

RE: Packaging for Upload

Hi Andre, Yes there is opportunity to upset somebody, but would hate to miss out on your creations. Maybe start out uploading the loco file with just the repaint files as it was origionally downloaded and just change the line in the read me that denotes the repaint done by yourself, then as you get more comfortable with uploading start including the special things like horns and such, You can do it bud! Take care, John

RE: Packaging for Upload

Hi Andre,The Geep-9's are without much restrictions, provided someone doesn't: a) claim the model as their own work; and/or b) sell it. Just zip the model with the ACE files and you're set. This also goes for the textures on the Geep, but don't use any of the (3DTrains) Geep textures on someone else's model (such as on a TA, NALW, or Dekosoft set) or vis versa. This is probably a no-no with just about everyone. However, if your textures aren't 100% original, then credit must be given to the original author (ie: Clayton Notgrass, Ken Martello, etc.). If you overwrite all of Clayton's work, but still have some 3DTrains textures in there, then that's OK by me, but credit to Clayton wouldn't be needed.Cheers!

RE: Packaging for Upload

Okay...So maybe I can do some of this upload stuff. As for the models, they were all based on freeware/shareware. (Yours, Marc!)As a precaution, I'll need to zip one up with the modified .eng file, a "readme", and send it to "someone" to see if their unzipper works with my zipper, and how the install went. Any takers? If'n I can do this... then I can unleash the Frisco and the Mop on the unsuspecting hoardes. It will probably be even more fun once I can share the fun?Wait, I just happened to think... I'll need to make a "loco.ace" depicting the loco, right? Aw well... no biggie... just a screen shot, resize... huh?Andre

RE: Packaging for Upload

Hey, Andre. I can't remember how I aliased all of my CRR gp7 skins- -I think I left them all default when I uploaded (though I've not got them aliased to the cool cabview in the library). If you want, use the File ID and Readme that I included with the CRR models and just erase my name and put yours in, leaving all the other stuff (except dates and roadnames, of course) the same. That would be an easy way of doing it. Good luck! Uploading is a pain in the rear-end, IMHO!

RE: Packaging for Upload

Thanks Clayton. It's a done deal.Don't know about the uploading part yet... packaging wasn't as bad as I expected. I just hope the loco.ace and the little .gif things are done correctly.BTW, you're included in the "readme".Andre

RE: Packaging for Upload

The engines are great. I did a little switching exercise in the Fort Smith yards and alleys. Beautiful!!!!
There is a problem with the MoPac though. It kept stopping in front of the green house and refused to budge for about an hour each time. I eventually gave up trying to pass the house and took it back to Van Buren.:0
Wish I had more time though. I'm busy programming for election coverage and have to get all the tabulation computers talking to the TV systems as well as sending results to the web page. Just for the record, work computing stinks!
