Hey Folks,I had a little spare time, so I whipped up these skins for the great FA model. I'm surprised that nobody has done any Canadian reskins of the FAs yet. They are more or less complete, except I need a little help on the VIA skin. Around the road numbers at the back of the unit is some text. I can't read it, and I was hoping that someone could tell me what it says.Incidentally, would the modeller who created this fine model please contact me offline (v1perfan@cogeco.ca)? There's a small glitch on the skin that I would like to discuss. If anyone is interested in these reskins, let me know and I will upload them.Brian.

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

Great looking models! How'd 'ya like to do a Frisco FA1? BTW, that pic of the prototype VIA isn't an FA1, but is a variant of an FA2. I especially like your CP Rail version. It would look superb on a backdated Kicking Horse Pass!Andre Ming

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

I can do Frisco, as long as the graphics don't sweep down the nose - this model is pretty cranky about that. I've tried to reskin using heritage CP colours, but to no avail. In any event, here's the work done so far. I thought these things wouldn't look right without their respective B units, so they're done too. As you can see, I also had time to sneak in a CN FPA-4 as well.I need to ask the original modeller for permission to upload these schemes. Could he please contact me (v1perfan@cogeco.ca). Thanks.I also want to replace the existing .ENG files with something a little more realistic. These things shoot up to 60mph in a hurry.Let me know what you think of the new schemes.Brian.

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

Brian said:> I can do Frisco, as long as the graphics don't sweep down the noseI don't know exactly what you're describing there, but here's a couple pics of SLSF FA1 units. As you can see, the SLSF had FA1's with/without nosedoor lights. Also, this represents the "Original" scheme. They also had a "Simplified" scheme: Retain the nose bow wave w/coonskin that wraps around the side... but lop it off in front of the ladder. No full length lower stripe, and no top stripe. This "Simplified" scheme was commonly refered to as the "Cigar Band" scheme. Shoot, one of each scheme and a guy would be all set to represent both FA1 paint schemes on the alpha of the Frisco Ft. Smith Sub route I have in my possession!BTW, I just noticed you modeled FA2's! When I looked at your first post, I "assumed" you had modeled with an CLW FA1 model like the one I have. Silly me.As for your latest round of pics... those ought to tickle the Canadien modeler nicely!Andre Ming

BrianAlways good to see some more Canadian content! Here is some info from the CN Lines SIG webpage (http://www.cnlines.com/cycl/loco/clas_diesel.html) that might be useful:According to my calculations this should be what is under the road number:
MPA-4??a although in your photo it kind of looks like MPA-16b. Does this make sense to anyone except me?
Both CN and VIA use diesel locomotive classification numbers of the form: XYZ-nnna where:X is the manufacturer:
C - Canadian Locomotive Company or Fairbanks-Morse
E - General Electric
G - General Motors
M - Montreal Locomotive Works, Alco, or BombardierY is the type of use:
F - freight
H - hump use
S - switcher
Y - yard use
R - road switcher
P - passenger serviceZ (this parameter may be absent) is the configuration of the locomotive:
A - cab unit
G - equipped with steam generator for older passenger cars
L - equipped to lead a set of hump units
T - equipped to trail in a set of hump unitsnnn - two or three digits:
nn - hundreds of horsepower
4nn - locomotive has four axles; nn is hundreds of horsepower
6nn - locomotive has six axles; nn is hundreds of horsepowera (this parameter may be absent) is the order number. First batch of locomotives of this type received are "a", then "b", and so on. Examples: GF-30c - freight locomotive manufactured by GM, 3000 horsepower, third batch received (CN 5000 is an SD40 of this class)
GPA-30a - cab unit for passenger use manufactured by GM, 3000 horsepower, first batch received (VIA 6400 is an F40PH-2 of this class)
GR-412a - four-axle road unit manufactured by GM, 1200 horsepower, first batch received (CN 1400 is a GMD1u of this class)
EF-640b - six-axle freight unit manufactured by GE, 4000 horsepower, second batch received (CN 2430 is a Dash 8-40CM of this class)
GH-00a - slug (no diesel engine so zero horsepower) for hump service, built by GM, first batch received (CN 514 is of this class)

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

Hi Andrew,Thanks for the info. After I left this message I did a little bit of research myself. You're close! It should read MPA-18b under the road number. Since this is an FPA-4, it has 1800 hp. FA-1s and FA-2s all used Alco's model 244 engine, while the FPA-4s used the model 251b engine. The thing I found strange was the FPA-4s are numbered MPA-18b while the FPB-4s are numbered MPA-18a. You'd figure the A units would end with "A" and the B units with "B". Whatever! Thanks again for the info.Brian.

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

I've almost got a Tuscan/Grey Vintage CP version done, just have to figure out how to get around the roof textures reversing on the opposite edges, and the nose warp for the stripes.. I'll upload an A-B-A set with correct road numbers..Pics later...Cheers

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

This is where the hiccup happens...I added a two-tone stripe along the edges of the roof texture to see what happens with the mapping.. As you can see, if you need a two tone roof scheme, it gets a little ugly.. its coming, though..
Cheers
Harold

RE: Two New FA Skins and Request

Very nice!I had a heck of a time with the lower "lightning stripe" near the front of the unit. It distorts the paint because of the way the texture wraps around the sides of the nose. I sorta put that one on the back burner and did some of the easier schemes.Looks good!Brian.
