I need some help on repainting... here's exactly what I need to know...I want to make a copy of Kurt's BNSF Dash 8, and rename it so that appears as a separate engine with a different name in the Consist Builder and the Engine Selector.------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!

OK first thing is obviously make a copy of the engines folder and rename iteg MKT GP7 to UP GP7next change the name of the .s file the .sd file and the .eng file to the names of your choosing *NOTE* the name must be the same you can't have conflicting names for the fileseg UP GP7.s UP GP7.sd and UP GP7.engnext open the .sd file in wordpad and find the old .s file reference it will look like this: shape ( MKT GP7.s change to this:shape ( UP GP7.snow you're ready to change the .eng file references use the find function in word pad to locate these lines here I am using a MKT loco as the "old" loco so a find for MKT GP7 would turn up all the lines that need to be changed to UP GP7 with the name line being the name you see in the AE and the simWagon ( MKT GP7 WagonShape ( MKT GP7.s ) Engine ( MKT GP7 Wagon ( MKT GP7 ) Name ("MKT GP7 #106")Note you cannot normaly change the .ace file names without uncompressing the .s file and besides there really isn't a need to change the .ace file names unless you plan on housing more than one loco in the same folder of the same model, Hope this helps ya out and good luck reskinning. 1972
That is exactly what I need! Thanks a lot!------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!
Your process doesn't seem to work for me. I bet you've done it before, but I did it step by step and it didn't work. The first try, it gave me an error that it couldn't read the FBL_DASH 8 5000.eng file, then the next try, it barely showed up in the Consist Editor. When I mean "barely" it showed up as a freight car and when I selected it, it gave me an error. Also, when I tried to load up the Steam Engines section, it gave me a blank, grey screen, and a Send/Don't Send errror.------------------------------------------------------------I'll never let go of the railroad that inspired me to involved with trains, the Union Pacific!
Have placed you new/re-named files into a new folder? Also, have you changed all of the referenced items that Stuart named? Even an experienced skinner, like myself, can miss something (like I just did yesterday). Remember the .ENG, .SD and .S file must all have the same name. That name should be used in .SD and .ENG files. An addition to the references that Stuart mentioned, sometimes there is an additional .S reference in the .ENG file for a virtual cab. That one needs to be changed too. The best way to learn how to do this is to download a model with its original skin and then compare it to someone else's re-skin of the same loco.Ken Martello Kenm62's MSTS Website3D Train Stuff http://www.3dtrainstuff.com
