RE: Burlington Northern SD24

Looks great - prompts a question. I suppose the nose(?)stripes indicate this loco customarily ran short hood forward. There've been some strings here about long-hood-forward operations, the fact that model builders set up their locos to run short-hood when they ran long-hood in the real world, and how the models might be modified to work turned around. By the time the SD24 was put in service, was short-hood-forward the rule? My assumption has always been that there was no physical difference between locos running short-hood v. long-hood - which would mean that in long-hood ops the engineer was on the left side of the cab when facing in the direction of travel, with his back turned to the control panel; and that that would have been contrary to the design assumptions of the manufacturers, and maybe the intentions of the roads as to use. And was this ever a labor-management issue?Got about a ton of your re-paints, Ken; I think of you when I see those big, shiny brown grain hoppers out on the BNSF mainline!

RE: Burlington Northern SD24

Great Northern ran long hood first. They were the only BN ancestor to run them that way. The SD-24 was purchased by the CB&Q. no other predecessor lines owned them so, Ken got it right.Jeff

RE: Burlington Northern SD24

Are you saying the locomotive was mechanically set up in a particular way due to a preference to run short hood forward - like mounting the seat or control console the other way? My point, and what I'm asking is, was there any physical difference between units that ran short hood forward and those that ran long hood forward? Because if there wasn't, all the SD24 paint reflects is that BN was customarily running short hood forward at the time the locomotive was painted. Why would BN run a particular locomotive short hood forward just because CB&Q had?

This loco does indeed represent a former CB&Q unit. A CB&Q re-skin is in the works, too.
BTW, the diagonal stripes are also found on the rear end. Yes, there is a physical difference in the location of the seats and controls. An engineer would get a stiff neck, operating this loco, long hood first, for a great distance. Some railroads bought locomotives with dual controls for bi-directional operation.

RE: Burlington Northern SD24

Thanks for the info, sir - very helpful. I think there have been strings referring to Southern or NS running long-forward, too, with some discussion about fixes that might work to turn the cab around. Any ideas on that?

Q geep 20's, 30's, 35's and 40's were single control as well as the sd45's. basically all main line power was single control and branch power was dual control.

RE: Burlington Northern SD24

fixin2, much obliged. Can you go into that just a little more? What do you mean by "dual control", exactly? Two complete control stands?Incidentally, everybody else has probably figured this out already, but you can run long-hood-forward in MSTS by simply setting up a power MU with the lead locomotive going the "right way", then running it around a siding and back into line so it's behind the turned-around, long-hood-forward no. 2, which then is in the lead but works like a helper. You can click forward onto the "lead" loco in external views and it looks just like the GN Christmas cards. The only sacrifice to realism is that the rear end of the new "lead" loco, your OWN supposed rear end, is in your cab view!

yes sir, 2 complete control stands. one on the engineers side and one on the firemans side only facing in opposite directions. if you were setting on the firemans side (left side)and engine was being run (from right side) short hood foreward, your back would be to the control stand for running long hood foreward and your right arm would be resting on the train line brake handle. (the long hood would be to your back) when ordering engines this was an option, expensive option i would imagine. one thing to remember about north american locomotives, if in doubt which is the front on the engine, the long hood or short hood, look for the F stenciled in front of the first handrail stanchion near the steps. its stenciled on all locomotives, why? probably a law or in the cfr title 49, why? i don't know. was done staring in the early 40's, guessing 1941.

That stencilled "F" deal sounds funny, but no more so than the "No Step" on the soft parts of an airplane or the "Remove Before Flight" tag on the pitot cover! Is there a general edit to change the end of the loco with the lit headlight? I've peeked in some .eng files to look at the light setup, but I can't tell the difference between setups on the (lit)headlights and (unlit) rear lights. I have this question up on another post but I've gotten no responses. What prompted it was I was running a Jasper Burmester loco long-hood-forward, by switching the trailing and leading units as I described, when I noticed the headlight on the long hood end was lit! Never noticed it before, but I guess Jasper had the long hood setup in mind when he re-skinned it - or maybe it was modelled that way.BTW - your own handle reminds me of a story. I was listening to a woman telling about something that had happened and she referred to someone as her "fixin' to be ex-old-man!" I can't think of any better way to describe that situation - 'cept maybe "my un-fiance."

Hi Ken,
I have been hoping for this. I will also take the CB&Q version. I like this locomotive.
Thanks again,
