I've been working on a fictional repaint of Justin Cornell's Dash 9 model into Milwaukee Road paint. I have attached a few pics of the repaint. It is not complete as I have a few more details to finish on the unit. Anyone have comments, suggestions? I plan to upload this unit in a few days once I get an ok from Justin on the model.Future repaints will be a Milwaukee Road SD70 and AC6000, MKT Dash 9 in John Deere paint, and a Missouri Pacific SD90MAC.Thanks,Austin S.

RE: Fictional Milwaukee Road Repaint - Comments? Sugges

OK....you asked for it..I promise I won't be brutal. First of all you said you weren't done yet, so that leaves a little assumption on my part. The color is good and the "lines" look OK too. What you need to do now is to apply the correct colors for your shadows and high-lights of the panels and doors. Including the darker areas such as the "grays". To give it a better "3D" look. Your basic color is "orangish". Take the base color and using your paint program (i.e. PS or PSP) make 3 new colors. Make one color a bright renditions of the "orange", then a medium dark and a darker version of the "orange". These will be your shadows and highlights for your panels. Most skinners or novice texture makers just make solid lines (darker) lines instead of using the shadows and highlights. Placing them in "symetrical" order will give the effect of the light hitting at a certain angle, which gives the paint job some "life" of it's own. Down below is a pic of my SD40 that I had to "re-shadow and re-light" the lines to give the 3D effect. Look at the side panels, you'll notice that one side is darker whereas the other is lighter. This is the "light& shadow" effect. You'll notice that I continued the coloring to the gray areas near the top. Also, if you screen capture your loco's for show, here is a suggestion. When starting MSTS, select "summer" and choose the time between 12noon and 1pm. This gives the loco or area "the perfect" light to capture the colors. And swing your camera around to choose the brightest side. I hope this helps alot for you and your reskin looks fine. Kip

I agree with everything Kip says........I use the same procedure as he does.......how about that Kip.........lol......anyway, the important thing to do is not lose your details and shadows because those make the entire thing look more realistic.........don't be discouraged by these comments......overall it looks very good........but if you go back and take care of this I think you will see a major difference in your reskin......Also remember that light throws shadows beneath ladders and steps and windows, etc........and they are slight variations in the original colors, not black or gray necessarily..........Keep up the good work..........TimFictional Milwaukee Road Repaint - Comments? Howdy, AS a MILW fan, I would suggest using black lettering on the sides and nose. It looks good to me other than that!!Good luck!!Kelley D. Ellison

Wanted to do one of them myself, but you beat me to it!! I like it but I think it needs some billboard lettering on the side and maybe the "sprinting indian" logo on the nose. It looks great, though.

I think those suggestions would finish it off nicely. In fact, I have an undecorated Athearn Dash-9 destined for this treatment in HO scale.Henry

Ok, a couple suggestions.
I agree with Kelley on the black lettering.
As a fellow MILW fan, I'd also suggest a maroon stripe kinda Quasi F units. All that orange just don't look quite right.
I'd drop the black stripe down to the top of the AC unit and continue around the cab.Any way it goes, you can count on my d/lAre you working on the Harlowton-Miles City route for MSTS?

RE: Fictional Milwaukee Road Repaint - Comments? Sugges

Ok, thank you for all the suggestions for the unit. I'm not the best at repainting so I'm not really an expert at this stuff. I will work on the maroon stripe and the black Milwaukee Road lettering on the sides. I never saw the Milwaukee Road in person but I've used many pics of other units to do this one. Again, the repaint is still in the works so that will not be the unit you see in the download.SSW, I am working on the line from Miles City to Harlowton. The line will be done in small 30-60 mile sections. I've got all the dem work complete and have gotten some of the yard in Miles City done. Thanks again for all the suggestions!Austin S.
