Is there any solution to avoid the message "...caused an error in makeace..." on ATI boards? I have a Radeon card and I would use makeace, but it won't work.
Or
Is there any other standalone uility to create ACE textures (except TGATool2.exe -> uses makeace..)?

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

I don't think your graphics card has any thing to do with your converting your files?I use the "make-ace" utility that came with MSTS.I personally don't use the make-ace in TGA2tool.exe.If your wanting to learn how to use it,just drop me a line d.shriner@worldnet.att.net

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

I DO know how to use makeace, but it fails to run.
I inspected the APPLOG dir and I saw that it loads
a bunch of directX related dll (but why?? - it's
purpose to convert one file format to another -
console application: no display at all).
So I think the problem can be a driver issue(?).
(Of course I've the latest drivers.)khalox

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

I use both tgatool2 and winace. I haven't had a problem. What I do is, after reloading after edit, I save as a tga. Then I export as an ace which opens makeace.

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

There is a problem with MakeAce that is possibly DirectX-related.
Nobody seems to have got to the bottom of it. MakeAce just suddenly stops working (or for some people never starts working) when something on the System has changed.
I haven`t heard if this problem has continued with the latest version of MakeAce though. This comes with the MS Patch for Trainsim and provides 2 versions (one Console and one GUI). It would be worth giving that a try.

>a line d.shriner@worldnet.att.net MAKEACE WILL NOT RUN ON ATI CARDS. I know exactly how to use Makeace. I currently am running four computers (networked) and Makeace will not run on the one equipped with a Radeon 8500 or the one with an ATI Xpert128. It runs fine on the other two systems (one with an Nvidia Geforce2 400 MX and the other with onboard SiS graphics). I also have an older ATI Xpert@Play which Makeace is incompatable with. Furthermore, I can simply swap out any of the ATI cards and replace with any non-ATI card and guess what ... Makeace runs just great. DEFINATELY AN ATI ISSUE.Currently I do everything on the system with the Radeon, move it over the network to the SiS system, convert in Makeace, and move it back across the network to the Radeon system. Real pain in the arse, but it works. My best advise right now is if you want to use Makeace, don't buy ATI.Ray (very frustrated on this issue ... fighting it for months)

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

Makeace works fine on my ATI Radeon equipped system, running Windows XP pro. I've tried it in command line mode, using the WinAce interface, and TGATool.. no problems at all, textures convert just fine, no hanging at all.. What OS are you running?cheers

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

I am running Windows ME. I had no problems using makeace with my old display adapter (but low frame rates). I upgraded to a RADON 8500 and now I'm getting the same message this guy was getting. There are tons of settings for the RADON card, I think it is just a matter of getting the right combination.
How are yours configured?
Worst case, I can swap back to the old card when I need to run Makeace (Yuck).

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

I have an ATI Rage Fury 128, and the MAKEACE that runs with TCATOOL2 works fine. The card has very slow frame rates, but I use TGATOOL2 a lot and never had a problem.

Hi Marc,
I can't get into my email right now. They are moving/migrating from email.com to mail.com. It was just slow to get in, now it is down. Hopefully it will be back up soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.

You guys are so rude. I was trying to get some help here and you guys want to chat on the thread. Can't you at least start your own thread to chat on so I don't get an email alert each time?

RE: MSTS MakeACE.exe fails on ATI video cards

Sorry marc.
I thought the purpose of the forum was for what I was trying to use it for, which is why there is that check box in the first place.
I expected a childish reply when I typed it. A real man would have said "sorry". Think about it. Now for everybody else that may experience this problem, I have found a work around. It's not perfect but it beats un-installing an offending graphics card and installing an older one. I went to Direct X Diagnostics, Display Tab, and disabled the Direct Draw Acceleration feature. Makeace then works. You will have to turn it back on when you have finished using Makeace or the main simulator will not run. This is all because Makeace is a "Front End" for Direct X .DLL's. It takes the graphics files, sends it to the graphics processor on the graphics card so the calculations are done by hardware (read fast). Turning this off forces Direct X to do the calculations by software.
