I'm relatively new to MSTS and totally hooked. I'm a fan of the Utah RR and very pleased to have downloaded the SD40 & GP38's found in the download section. Utah RR recently acquired some SD50s and GP40s and I was hoping that someone might paint up an SD50 or 2 in the Utah RR scheme sometime. I haven't a clue yet as to how to do this. Here's a great link with the locomotive roster, photos, etc. for reference. http://www.railroadsofutah.com/Utah_Railway/utah_railway.htmlOf course it would be great to see those MK5000C also. I'm also a CSX fan, but like and use all the others as well. I have found that I can go and change several of the consist to my own likings in the various activities. Awesome! Thanks to all for such great work. I live from day to day to see all the new downloads available. Thanks!!!! Michael

GOOD IDEA FOR A NEW PROJECT!! Its on my to-do list now. Gee I almost forgot about it. I travel through Helper a lot and have lots of photo's of the SD50's and the MK5000's. I repainted some SD40-2's a long while back but never uploaded them. Check them out. They need work, but are basically done.

Utah RR SD50 Request Update

Hi Nick - got my Diesel Era magazine in the mail yesterday with some nice pictures of Utah RR. It inspired me so I thought I would inquire as to any progress with the SD40 and/or SD50 to date? Even if you haven't had an opportunity to spruce up the SD40 you pictured, I would still be interested in getting it from you at some future date as is. Thanks and have a great Memorial Day weekend!Michael

LAST EDITED ON May-04-02 AT 11:39 AM (EDT)Hmmmmm, the roster from your website link says GP38, but theses engines have an extra fan in the back like a GP35. But right next to the dynamic brake is a box that looks similar to a GP38. I am confused. I will have to dig up some pictures to try to help figure this out.

In the file library someone painted a GP38 to look like them. So maybe I will go back and paint up some 35's too. I saw the GP40's in Provo, and have pics so maybe I can attempt them too. If only I could just paint engines all day Nick

RE: Utah RR SD50 Request

I'm not sure....I did some research with James W. Kerr's Locomotive Rosters and News back through 1990 and they do not list any GP35's as being on the Utah RR roster. They do list 2 that were SD35's #2959 & 3108. The GP38s range from #'s 2000-2009. Here are some additional sites for Utah RR: http://www.railroadsofutah.com/
http://ole.net/~rcraig/UTAH.HTML
http://www.utahrailway.com/
http://www.trainweb.org/utahrails/utah/utroster.htmlI would certainly use the GP35s if you paint them up. I know what you mean about the time - I would love to be on MSTS all day and night - so much you can do with it. I just got TAs American Classics TS Pack in the mail yesterday and experimenting with it today. Thanks again...much appreciated!!!!! Michael

Ahhhh!! Thanks for the links. I figured out my question. Looking at the roster from
http://www.trainweb.org/utahrails/utah/utgp38.html
I saw that originally the engines were GP35's. OmniTRAX rebuilt them to be GP38-2. So I was right... its a mix of the two. Hmmm maybe I could work with someone to make a "correct" model. Let me see what I can do.Thanks for the links. I had been wondering that for some time.Nick

RE: Utah RR SD50 Request

Ok the "GP35" "GP38" is actually an original GP35, turbocharger removed, and has reworked power assemblies. So in essence a rebuilt GP38, horsepower wise.Same thing goes with some LLPX GP38-2's that are in service in this area.....originally GP40's rebuilt to GP38's just by removing the turbocharger and removing a fan. (Some have the same radiator length from the GP40 so they look kinda weird). As well the Utah SD50's were originally from Australia, so in certain aspects look totally different than the US built SD's, mainly in the radiator section at the back being one of the most notable differences.Jon

YOU'RE RIGHT!!Yep those are from Australia mate. (American doing bad Australian impression). I wish I knew where from but it escapes me. One of these SD50's started a rather large fire in the canyon the other day. Its turbocharger was blowing smoke and sparks and it lit the hillside on fire. Its just too damn dry in the Western US right now.BTW: I hope someday to work on the SD50. Unfortunately I working two jobs which makes playing with MSTS a lot more difficult.Nick
