Apr-14-02, 09:38 PM (EDT) "Olympic Locos" How's come, with all you "exceptional" builders and skinners out there; we have not seen any attempts at U.P.'s Olympic Torch units. Not and easy task, but food for thought!!! Ron K of Rockford Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-15-02, 04:44 PM (EDT) 1. "RE: Olympic Locos" I'm sure it could be done pasting photographs onto a sd70,but the photo's would have to be "dead-on"-straight views of the actual loco.that's my opinion, but i personally wouldn't even attempt it...I'd like to keep the rest of the hair i have left. Apr-16-02, 10:29 AM (EDT) 2. "RE: Olympic Locos" When they were here in Utah I made sure to get plenty of reference. Still, these would not be an easy task. They have several marks which run from side to side, all of which have to line up perfectly.
I have the reference and the SD70 so..... We'll see.-Jago-

Apr-17-02, 01:44 PM (EDT) 4. "RE: Olympic Locos" A great idea...they are good-looking units...however...have a very good attorney. An acquaintance of mine, who runs an online rail photo web site -nothing big, just a few hunderd pix from his travels ... received a notice from the SLS Olympic Organizing Committee, demanding he remove the pictures of the SD70's and Olympic train from his web site - the reason? ...The "image" is copyrighted. He was told this extends to pictures on free sites, models, items for auction, video, etc. In short, even the image cannot appear without proper licensing arrangements and fee payment, and he was informed licensing is closed.
I'd heard this was the reason Athearn could not decorate their SD70's in Olympic colors, as Overland Models owned the "exclusive" right to "model" the units. You might check into that before you get too far.Bob Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-17-02, 03:19 PM (EDT) 5. "RE: Olympic Locos" <sigh> Another example of the "Olympic Spirit" at work. Too bad it it's true, and I think that it most likely is. Just think about it, if these folks had been in existence back in 1936, then *Hitler* and his bunch of thugs would probably have held the same exclusive rights.Henry<Who remembers when the Olympics at least bothered to make it look like it was about sportmanship/competition rather than $$$> Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-19-02, 08:46 PM (EDT) 7. "RE: Olympic Locos" I just saw one of these units this afternoon while driving back from San Francisco. It was just outside of Paso Robles, and sure looked nice! Does anybody know how many of these units UP has? Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-19-02, 10:17 PM (EDT) 8. "RE: Olympic Locos" I thought it was two - UP 2001 and UP 2002. Don't quote me though. For the official count you'll have to submit your request to the IOC legal people Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-20-02, 00:20 AM (EDT) 9. "RE: Olympic Locos" That's correct. I spoke with the engineer and conductor for a good hour and these are the only 2 of their kind. As stated they are numbered 2001 and 2002. They believed that the engines would eventually be moved to a museum in the near future.-Jago-

Apr-21-02, 05:25 PM (EDT) 10. "RE: Olympic Locos" UP move two $2 mil plus units that are brand new to a museum and loose their revenue? I think that highly unlikely. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-22-02, 01:20 PM (EDT) 12. "RE: Olympic Locos....DO I hear FREEWARE???......" Derek was kind enough to updsate me on this. Apparently, the locomotives not only carry the trademarked color and graphic design of the SLCOC, but they also carry the registered trademarks of corporations such as Coke, Chevrolet, etc. Given all those names and trademearks, I can see (though I don't agree) why the problem with reproducing it. I did order a pair of the Overland units - they are too good looking to pass up.The units are not destined to be put in a museum, as thay are brand new. They will run around in the Olympic scheme for a while then be repainted into standard UP livery and wear their original intended road number. This was on a UP fan site. Jun-03-02, 11:00 PM (EDT) 13. "RE: Olympic Locos" If anyone is interested in seeing what the 2002 Olympic Torch train looked like, check out these web sites:http://members.cox.net/nbratney/omaha-highways/torch/http://4dw.net/railimages/5.htmlhttp://www.railroadpix.com/rrphotos/Special_Trains/UP_Torch_Train_2002/http://www.geocities.com/mvmrrc/flame.htmThere are quite a few web sites where the images have been removed. I guess the SLCOC have not found these yet.

Jun-04-02, 11:51 AM (EDT) 14. "RE: Olympic Locos" I have actually seen one of the Olympic Torch Relay engines myself.. in person. I don't claim to know a lot about trains.. not even a little.. but my fiancee is obsessed with trains.. LoL... some of you might know him.. BlakeTyner.. he posts on here a lot... Anyways.. back to what I was saying... I was by former Southern Pacific (SP, Espee) main through Mt Pleasant, TX...now used by UP for southbound directional running. The purplish blue color of it caught my attention and I saw that it said Olympic Torch Relay on it... I didn't get the number on it.. but I'm sure it was one of the two Olympic Torch units. I told Blake about it later that night and he just looked at me with his jaw dropped... LoL... then he told me what it was... and I was like... wow! ~*Jenn*~ Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
