Apr-04-02, 10:58 PM (EST) "Reworked Grey Clinchfield SD40s" WD Calvert released a grey CRR SD40 sometime back with permission for others to modify his paint scheme. Well, I've been messing around with it a little and would like some feedback. Following are screenshots comparing our two models.
From the rear. WDC's is loco 3012, mine is 3003. I redid the numberboards to make them larger (I have a pic of 3003 with boards this large, but they are white letters on black. Not sure if they stayed this large when changed over to black letters on yellow) and redid the yellow paint, too. I also changed the color of "CLINCHFIELD" and you can see the difference between exhaust fans on this shot, too.
In this view of the conductor's side you can once again see the difference in the cooling fans. I reworked the battery boxes and the yellow paint (angles on both ends and round edges of the "loop" on the side). I also redid the CLINCHFIELD on the side and redid the nose cavity. You can also see a difference in my walkways and steps.
The engineer's side, which was basically worked over in the same way the conductor's side was.
And finally the nose. Major differences here are the reworked angles on the yellow paint, plus adding yellow to the fronts of the steps leading into the cab. I also moved the location of tthe marker lights (but haven't worked on the eng file yet- -I'm still not sure that CRR even used the marker lights. If I find out they didn't, I'll remove them from the eng file). Of course, you can also see the changes to the ditchlights (still irritating to have those on classic locos) and walkways. Overall changes include slightly darkening the yellow. This model is still a work in progress and I NEED YOUR HELP TO FINISH IT! If you have any ideas about how to make it better, or more closely match the CRR scheme, PLEASE post them! Thanks! Clayton Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

May I inquire as to what paint program you use. I had PSP v 7.0 and had a tough time of getting used to it. Still haven't figured out what all it can do.WDC Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Apr-05-02, 07:53 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Reworked Grey Clinchfield SD40s" I appreciate the comments! I use Adobe Photo Shop 5.5, and I still have to do things "the hard way" with it b/c I don't know all the neat little tricks. The SD40-2 is kind of a hard model to repaint b/c some things are mapped in weird places. For instance, the yellow on the steps leading into the cab is mapped on the side of the nose under the "loop"(this area is actually hidden on the 3D model- -it's "behind" the battery boxes) The 2D map file doesn't look uniform or pretty when you paint it like that, but the loco looks OK. There are a couple of other weird places, too (which is why there's a spot of yellow on both of our model's noses that is out of place)- -you sometimes have to wiegh the pros and cons of what to paint. Any way, I'm not trying to "out do" you're model, I'm just trying to get it as close as possible and wanted to post pictures of your model to show how I'd done tihngs a little differently. You actually did all the hard work! Further comments/cristicism/suggestions from the group aimed towards making this model better are greatly appreciated!
