Mar-26-02, 11:00 AM (EST) "Just plain Yellow ..." Can any of you Yankees out there help a poor ole Limey. Union Pacific is Armour Yellow right? Wrong! Sun and weather must fade out the paint to various shades of yella? Right? My real question is do you ever see a string of UP diesels ALL the same colour (sorry, color)? To illustrate my point I include some shots of TA's wonderful diesels, so real you can almost smell the new paint?Message Areas - "Just plain Yellow ..." – image 1 The lead loco is darker than the next one, here they are coming atcha ...Message Areas - "Just plain Yellow ..." – image 2 So what happens in real life? You don't get many UP locos around South Wales!

Mar-26-02, 01:26 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." I live almost on the UP triple main in Nebraska. The newer locomotives (SD70 in particular) are slightly brighter and much cleaner. The older locomotives are not as faded as shown, but have much more gray from grime (coal dust and dirt and soot). C40-8W units are particularly grimey (lots of coal train use). The C41-8 spartan cab units run more intermodal and autoracks, and are cleaner.

Mar-26-02, 07:53 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." Hi Guys,
While we're on the subject of UP, does anyone have the exact color values for Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray? I use PSP7 and it would be nice to have those rather than guessing. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-26-02, 09:05 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." Well, I don't know exactly what you mean by "values" but, I do have some color samples from a book by the name of "Pullman Paint And Lettering Handbook". And, yes Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Grey are both included. Maybe I could scan these and e-mail 'em your way.Jeff Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

There are two values, the RGB and Hexadecimal value. Armour Yellow: R253 G175 B2 - Hex value is FDAF02
Harbor Mist: R128 G128 B128 - Hex value is 808080Based on Jens-Chris Baraenz' UP turbine. He seems to be the closest to UP colors of anybody out there. Your mileage may vary! Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-27-02, 01:45 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." I only notice this on SD70Ms. The SD60s all look like the rest of the fleet. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-27-02, 02:56 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." Thanks for the reply, but coincidentally, I already had those. I've been using the colors from some of Jens-Chris's stuff already. They've always looked pretty close to my UP photos. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-29-02, 06:54 AM (EST) 9. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-02 AT 06:56 AM (EST)Ok, there were many people who mailed to me and said "Jens, you have the closest UP yellow, that there is..." (from America)
and there were some people who mailed to me and said "Jens, your UP yellow is the #####. Make it like the other UP yellows..." (from New Zealand)Now, to get it right.
IMHO my colors look pretty good, if you want to use the fresh-clean-factory-painted version.
If you want dirty locos, it's of course more faded...Thanks to all of you, who support me... Jens-Chris<EDIT>
BTW, anyone interested in a Armour Yellow Big Boy ??

Mar-29-02, 11:58 AM (EST) 10. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-02 AT 12:03 PM (EST)I am sorry, but your assumption that older locomotives are faded just is not correct. They get gray and dirty, not a faded yellow. The faded versions I have seen in the sim are not seen on the tracks. I just saw a SD40-2 with one box car, and 15 gondolas yesterday and the yellow was not faded as some are doing in the sim. The gray area may fade some and gets a little murky, but the yellow just gets grayish and dirty, not lighter.

Mar-29-02, 12:17 PM (EST) 11. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." I love posts like this..Depending on the locomotive, and where it has been based out of, yes, the paint will began to fade, change into some wierd color, and flaking, but this happens after years of service. Unless you was the company that painted the 4500s series for the BNSF, you'll notice it has a sickening paint scheme after a month or so. The orange was not mixed right, making the engines have there own paint scheme - which I call Heritage 3.UP Examples, this was in Albina, Oregon.

And last, This was at Moody, Oregon. Note the Third unit, and how faded it is.

So, as you can see... there is never a true "clean" unit except a locomotive(s) first 100 or so hours in service. Amazing how tunnels, canyons and hard loading quicken the process up.Just my 9 1/2 cents worth of change. later!!

Hi Brian,
I agree, there are some locomotives that will look different, but I think the model you show "faded" may have had some other problem, (spill or damage). Note that some sharp "unfaded" ares appear in the same paint? The vast majority of UP equipment I see come through Nebraska, is not faded, but a dingy gray particularly those models like AC4400CW and C40-8W, that see lots of coal service. The SD70s certainly don't look like the faded SD70 I have seen in the sim, maybe they run them different in other parts of the country?
BTW, I also saw SD9043AC #8000 come through yesterday on an empty coal train (westbound) as well.

Mar-29-02, 07:47 PM (EST) 13. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." Bob,
I have seen some pretty faded Armour Yellow here in Waco.....Now, I didn't have my camera, but YES, UP units DO fade. For the record It seems as if they were SD40's and GP38-2's, and they were faded, and looked extremely ratty. BNSF 4359 is in Temple right now. That warpumpkin looks like she's been scalped! Mar-30-02, 01:40 AM (EST) 14. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." I have not seen many of the GP38-2s up here. The SD40-2s I have seen were still pretty unfaded, but a little dull, but we probably get the better SD40-2s running through here. I have not seen anything that looked like the pale SD70 that is available. UP locos seem to weather more dull than lighter except the gray weathers much more than the yellow.
BNSF stock seems to fade more. I see some pretty faded stuff on that line. The SD70Macs though are generally washed a lot more often than the UP AC4400s, not gray and smudged even in coal service.

Mar-30-02, 02:42 AM (EST) 15. "RE: Just plain Yellow ..." Hi Guys, Sorry to say this again if it already has, but the fadded orange of the BNSF CAME DELIVERED that way!!! It was a screw up at the factory!! This happned on both the GE's and the EMD stuff!! The UP paint on some of the fleet is sooooo badly faded or peeling, it makes me wonder if they didn't inherit some of the SP's habits!!!! Kelley
