Mar-25-02, 02:35 PM (EST) "File sizes of Add -on Locomotives ...What did I do wrong?" Hello , I did my first re-paint of SF_8061 "Kodachrome". When I viewed the files in the library it is in excess of 5.4mb. I've noticed that most add-ons are around 2.0mb. What did I do wrong? I used tgatool2 - saved the targa files as 24 bit and converted to ace.
Was I supposed to compress the ace files?
Thanks,
Dennis

I've seen uncompressed ace files shrink from over 1.3 MB to under 250 KB with the most recent version of makeace. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

I have been experimenting aorund with .ace files sizes lately and have been getting files to compress from 1029kb sizes down to about 170kb almost 10X compression with not any noticible quality loss. (back up your work before doing this). Sometimes I have been losing the alpha channel thats why I say back it up. With the image open head to colors and then goto decrease color depth and set to 32k (24 bit)
if you notice any change in quality change it back. You have to stay in the 24bit range for alpha channels I believe but if you don't have an alpha channel on the image then you even can decrease the colors to 256k if you notice no quality loss some image you see no quality loss others you do. Once you have the tga file goto winace and pick the input and out put then if you have an alpha channel check the first optiuon one bit transparency and have the Zlib compression on. Then convert. You can also try the DXT which compresses even more but not all video cars support it. Stick with Zlib if your distributing your file. Just a sec ago I took a 1029kb tga file got it down to a 400 sme kb tga file then converted to a 130kb .ace file =) That should work for you Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
