Mar-08-02, 12:35 PM (EST) "Photoshop trouble" LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-02 AT 12:59 PM (EST)I hope that someone will be able to shed light upon this, as it's got me completely baffled:Fired up computer today, everything runs fine, except Photoshop. Everything I do in photoshop takes several seconds to get a response, whether it's changing tools, selecting a different layer, changing the selected part of the image, pulling down menus, etc. Even the mouse cursor takes forever to change when moving it between the image and a selection window. No other applications are showing any similar symptoms. I have rebooted numerous times, and tried Photoshop from a clean boot and after having run various other applications first. Windows itself seems fine - I can navigate through windows and directories fine with no sluggishness at all. Indeed, the only part of Photoshop that responds properly is the explorer interface of the "open file" dialog box. I have searched Adobe's knowledgebase, but cannot find any description of the problems I am experiencing.Curiously, I can edit text in Photoshop fine - it instantly updates the screen, until I commit the changes so that I can move the text layer about. Then it's back to the several second delay after every mouse click.I have not changed anything on my machine since yesterday - all drivers are exactly as they were. No extra memory resident programs are running, and according to Windows, the system resources when running slow Photoshop are similar to what they were under normal, fast Photoshop (around 65 - 70%).I've checked Photoshop options, bumped up the system resources available to Photoshop, but to no avail. It's like running Photoshop on a ZX Spectrum, and it's infuriating, considering that I haven't touched or altered anything on my system!!Anyone got any ideas as to what might be causing this, or anything I could try to solve it or at least identify the source of the problem? Thanks in advance! Cheers!
TAfanPS Switching to Photoshop from another window that is running also takes forever for Photoshop to fill in all the tools windows, menu bars etc, but going from Photoshop to another window is as quick as can be.... <scratches head>PPS I am running Photoshop 6 on a PIII 500MHz, 256MB PC100 SDRAM, Creative Geforce 2 Ti 64MB, Win98SE.PPPS Ctrl + Alt + Del shows me that I am often running a program called "Aom". It seems to appear with Photoshop but doesn't close with Photoshop. I don't recall ever seeing it before, but then I haven't been looking for anything. Anyone know what it is? Mar-08-02, 01:10 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Photoshop trouble" I am not familiar with Photoshop (I use PaintShop Pro) but it sounds like you have a virus. I suggest you run a full virus scan on your system. Stealth type virii tend to steal all available memory. Also check your swap file. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-08-02, 06:19 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Photoshop trouble" TAFanReally sounds strange. I'm running PS 6 as well, but never had that problem. Everything I can think of to check, you've done. By the way, the only AOM I know of is MS "Age of Mythology" game.
Are you running that by chance?-Verne

Mar-08-02, 08:28 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Photoshop trouble" LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-02 AT 09:06 PM (EST)Thanks for your responses, guys.Cal, I have now (belatedly!) purchased, installed, and used Norton AV 2002. I did indeed have a virus, but it was just a stupid JS.Seeker - nothing related to Photoshop or memory usage. The reason I didn't suspect a virus is because there is nothing wrong with anything else. Only Photoshop is affected. Only Photoshop is exhibiting any strange behaviour. In fact, the rest of the system is running remarkably sweetly!Verne, I don't have the game you refer to, sadly, as it would be one thing to explain this mysterious program!Photoshop does still work, but requires the patience of a saint. And I'm not a saint. So unfortunately all my repaints are on hold until I can resolve this. Some other things that I have discovered, though:-The delay between doing anything in photoshop and observing a result (which includes everything from ordering it to do a complex filter rendering to moving the mouse over different parts of the screen, with simply painting freehand on the image somewhere inbetween!) is quite often accompanied by a click of the hard disk. This normally indicates it is using a swap file, but opening a 150k jpeg image and drawing a line on it should not be any reason to start using a swap file on a freshly booted machine with 256MB RAM.-Running windows system monitor gives interesting results. I've nothing to compare it to, since I don't exactly run system monitor for fun, but even the (delayed) process of switching to Photoshop from another application, even with no images open in photoshop, causes massive intensive (100%) bursts of processor kernal usage. It seems strange that switching to a program already running should require should massive system resources.-Being on a modem, I'm not on-line all the time. However, early this evening I was on-line but my connection was momentarily idle. Apart, that is, from a small burst of transmission (indicated by the little icon in the system tray that I assume all dial-up users are familiar with ) everytime I switch from a browser or explorer window back to Photoshop. Happens everytime I switch to Photoshop, regular as clockwork. Is it sending to Adobe? What else could it be? According to NAV 2002, I don't have any viruses at all...-Anyone know what an "iserror.log" file means? Found one and it contains stuff such as "Total memory allocated = 5452148

I've read reports that it is among the best anti-virus protection you can get. But Liveupdate won't update my virus definitions beyond december 2001 (had to download it manually to get it up to date) and as I type this, hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del tells me "Navw32 (not responding)". What use is an anti-virus program that can't even keep running?Either way, guess I'm heading for the dreaded re-install pretty soon... Thanks for your thoughts though, folks.Cheers!

Mar-08-02, 10:21 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Photoshop trouble" TAfanIt IS that Aom program you're talking about... that applet is a known memory hog.Check out this page... http://performanceart.net/personal/rants/big_brother_online.htmlI'll give you the most relevalent portion here..Aom is a small program inherent in Adobe Photoshop. What it does is very "Big Brother." It tracks and records programs on your computer and send the registration information for ANY program running on the system to Adobe, supposedly to stopy piracy. For all intensive purposes it gives Adobe a "window" into your system. The above mentioned web site gives you instructions on how to get that puppy out of your systemGood LuckQueen"And the meandering of the queen continues for another day..." Mar-12-02, 11:41 AM (EST) 6. "RE: Photoshop trouble" Be careful with that NAV 2002; it's quite buggy, and can crash a lot, if you aren't. You might notice it runs a bit slower than NAV 2001 (if you've ever had it)..in the help file it even states that there are known problems with the program, and you may have to reinstall if there's any errors (which may be almost every other time you use it)
Hauling cars is fun; but crashing them is even better.-Darkfyre Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
