Mar-05-02, 01:26 AM (EST) "Union Pacific Jet Snow "Plow"" I lived in Idaho Falls, ID about 15 years ago. At that time, UP was operating a very unusual snow removal device. It was a jet turbine engine mounted on a railcar. The turbine was angled so that its exhaust discharged downward toward the track so that both the blast and the heat of the exhaust cleared snow from the track. The first time I became aware of this snow removal unit, I was shoveling snow in my front yard when I heard the sound of a jet turbine. I thought it was a commercial jet airliner taking off at the local airport, about 3 miles away. I thought it rather curious that the jet sound didn't dissipate after a couple of minutes. It wasn't until a couple days later that I saw this unit and figured out what it was.My question for the group--has anyone ever seen one of these units and do you have any pictures. At the time I saw this turbine car, it never occured to me to take any pictures of it. If I could find any pictures or specs, I might try to model it for MSTS. Check out this link:http://www.hazegray.org/rail/snow/other/We rarely get any appreciable snowfall in my part of the U.S., so I've never seen any railroad snow plows around here, although most of switches on the NS mainline in town are equipped with gas-powered heaters that prevent them from freezing up.Cameron Lashley,TrainArtisan associate

Mar-05-02, 03:57 PM (EST) 3. "RE: Union Pacific Jet Snow "Plow"" Thanks guys. I checked out both websites and was surprised to find a variety of these turbine snowblowers. I thought the one UP was using in Idaho Falls when I lived there was a one of a kind experimental unit although that was a gut feeling. I never researched the subject.I don't know if the railroads who use(d) these units designed their own or if some company specialized in them. I think I will do some more research on the subject and see if I can locate the manufacturer and possibly some detailed plans or specs. In the meantime, if you have never seen one of these units, check both websites in the postings above. The unit I have seen is yellow with the wide flat discharge nozzle on the jet engine. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
