Are you guys just so good that you can do it freehand? (I would believe that!!!) Do you also have to get permissions from the rail company to repaint? That would p*** me off! Matt

Mar-02-02, 07:13 PM (EST) 1. "RE: How do you guys do the logo's????" LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-02 AT 07:15 PM (EST)Many of the older logos can be scanned in from old commercial paper, such as public timetables. At least in the US, railroad logos were not generally trademarked before the advent of the old Auto Train company, and many of them since still aren't. The same is true for whether the logos are copyrighted. On the model railroading side of things, commercial manufacturers will usually ask an active railroad for permission if it involves a logo or trademark currently in use, as applied to a new model. According to what I've heard, only Union Pacific has made any sort of an issue about this, but I may be mistaken on this. What is copyrighted is the artwork for commercially available decals and other transfers. Since it is copyrighted, it would require permission for commercial reproduction. The legal requirements for non-commercial reproduction as not as strict (or so I'm told); but common courtesy would require the same consideration, as far as I'm concerned. I would afford exsting railroads the same courtesy for their trademarked or copyrighted material as well... -Phil Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Mar-02-02, 10:46 PM (EST) 2. "RE: How do you guys do the logo's????" Are you talking about for instance logos you see on repainted cars and engines? I get mine from several sources. Photos of real trains, scans of HO models, gifs from web sites, are all sources I've used. Once you get good at using Paint Shop Pro, extracting logos from all these sources and incoporating them on a skin is quite easy. As for getting permission from a railroad, I've never done it, and probably neither has most people. As long as you're giving away you're stuff for free, are'nt claiming to have some type of official endorsement, and are'nt depicting a railroad or company in a demeaning manner, you're going to be fine. I asked a friend of mine who has a part time job at a local model train store about this. According to him, most railroad logos, paint schemes, etc. are not trademarked or copyrighted. Grizzly

Mar-03-02, 11:20 AM (EST) 4. "RE: How do you guys do the logo's????" Well...
I just made them free-hand painted, (ok, with computer) saved them, and I'm using these every time again.
I never asked for permission...
I don't know, but as long as it's freeware they won't complain about it, will they ?Jens-Chris----------

Mar-02-02, 11:25 PM (EST) 3. "RE: UP Trademark issue (old news)" Discussed extensively last May when a Union Pacific Public Relations VP denounced MSTS as "Dangerous and irresponsible" and threatened legal action against any one using UP trademarks (This included predecessors SP, D&RGW, MP, etc). He even expanded it a bit to suggest this included modeling of UP routes.Later, when questioned by "Trains Magazine" about their position, they seem to back down a bit and say they would not object to non-commercial exchange.Given many decades of friendly cooperation between the railroad and both modellers and commercial model railroad manufacturers, it was hard for many in the upcoming hobby to understand why virtual model railroaders were given different treatment. Apparently, it came down to a fear by this particular UP executive that someone might use the knowledge from MSTS to "Steal a train".I don't think an explanation was ever offered as to why a locomotive thief would care what the logo on a locomotive was or why it would make a difference if the simulated model was commercial or freeware. Mar-04-02, 08:55 AM (EST) 5. "RE: UP Trademark issue (old news)" i usually get my logos from scanned pictures, scanned HO models, official website for that railroad etc. usually have to do some serious heavy editing to them in photoshop in order to get it looking good. the higher resolution the scan or graphic is, the better. some logos are easy to do freehand such as Penn Central, SEPTA, and some other logos which are rather simple to draw freehand.

Mar-05-02, 01:31 AM (EST) 10. "RE: How do you guys do the logo's????" I find that scanned pages from the Microscale catalog are quite helpful, although If I were to ever do a model for either payware or donationware I would either ask Microscale for permission or I would probably draw my own.The voice of insanity in a seemingly normal world. Mar-10-02, 02:16 AM (EST) 15. "RE: How do you guys do the logo's????" I go to websites for tough ones
example: Chicago NorthwesternBut for things like CSX I just use the text editor of my graphics program.
For instance use a Bold Rockwell for CSX.
