Feb-10-02, 08:01 PM (EST) "Metro-North Genesis" I faked the back of the NH Genesis and called it done. I started on the Metro-North version, and I am going to release both simultaneously. Here's where I am now:
Needs a few more hours work (put in about 20-25 hrs combined so far) and should be complete within the next 5 days.Sorry it's taking so long. Hope it'll be worth it.Michael Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-11-02, 10:27 AM (EST) 2. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" Beautiful engine(s). Ilove 'em!. But that damn broken back seam through the middle ruins it... I wish J-C would take the time to fix it... or ship it over to us or one of the other "design houses" to fix.... Buzz still wants to do this guy in 3DCanvas. He doesn't think too much of TSM because of artifacts like this ruining (in his opinion and he has the modeler's eye for detail) an otherwise excellent job by a talented young designer...

Feb-11-02, 07:44 PM (EST) 4. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" I know what you mean. I don't want to complain about the seam since I'm just glad that we have a new Genesis. But as you can see with the MN skin above, the two sides of the texture do not shade the same (due to MSTS?). J-C knows about the seam and hopefully he's looking into it. Giving it to someone else to tweak might be an alternative for him.One very nice thing about J-C's textures is that there is no stretching on the carbody, which makes the quality of the skin rather nice and detailed when you zoom in on it. That's one thing I noticed on the TA F7s with the nose as opposed to 3DTrains' version - it's rather stretched so the quality of the logos start to fall apart when you get close. From a normal distance they look great though... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-12-02, 08:13 PM (EST) 5. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-02 AT 08:14 PM (EST)The shading is probably a result of the way TSM is exporting the model to MSTS. I know in 3DC i can play with the "Crease" function (a sort of smoothing tool) to exaggerate or hide things like that. In fact, if you search the Loco Design forum, you can find a few screenshots of the F40 with some lighting oddities like that on the nose when i was playing with the Crease tool trying to find the perfect setting. I am not too familiar with TSM, but J-C may want to see what kind of smoothing options he can play with, as that may result in a quick and easy fix.------ BUZZ ------

Feb-15-02, 05:53 AM (EST) 7. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" Hi chuck,
the broken line of Jens-Chris' loco arises from the fact, that he used 2 separeted parts insteed of one to avoid a stretching of the textures and polygon smoothing.
TSM supports no bigger texture than 512 x 512 pixels. The problem could easily be solved with the TSM Pro editions which should support also textures with 1024 x 1024 pixels (but this software is more expensive !).
I think JensChris schould try to separate the side walls from the parts which must be smoothed and let the main parts of the sides unsmoothed (in this case the vertical line will disappear).

Feb-13-02, 07:56 PM (EST) 6. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" I could beta test your metro-north genesis and new haven genesis locomotives. I'll make sure the models detail is perfect.

Feb-15-02, 09:46 AM (EST) 8. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" You can use 1024x1024 with on TSM model already...
Do your texture in 1024x1024, do a resized copy at 512x512 and apply that texture to the model.
Then you can just replace the .ace file with the ace file of the bigger version. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-15-02, 06:38 PM (EST) 9. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" LAST EDITED ON Feb-15-02 AT 06:48 PM (EST)Hi Dave,
sorry but I didn't fully unterstand your tricky procedure !
Can You explain it more detailed ?Is it correct, that the textures in the .ace file are scaled relatively to the extents of the ace file.
i.e if I use a 1024x1024 ace file insteed of a 512x512 ace-file,that the texture-parts in it are automatically scaled by 2 ?
If so, that is a very nice feature !!! (which will help in our case !)Thanks
Tony

Feb-15-02, 08:35 PM (EST) 10. "RE: Metro-North Genesis" Good one Dave! NALW is using the 3DC which in addition to a longer development cycle handles texture development differently than TSM does so we really couldn't help much... What we would wind up doing is redoing the texture in 3DC....
which once you do that you may as well do the whole darn thing....------Chuck Schneider---------
