Feb-04-02, 10:09 PM (EST) "How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" My tinkering has yet to produce anything that I would call worth while in the last month. So on that note if some one would be so kind as to take one or two(more) of the fine Espee units and make them look like this I would be grateful.
Here is an SP SW1500 that has Southern Pacific sanded off the sides and yellow painted under the windows with new #'s and U.P.Y. stenciled above the number and a Shiel on the nose. If you look closely you can also see yellow just below the grey on the right hand side with the new #'s.
I do not recall what type of SP engine this was, as I can only see the cab, but I believe it is a GP. But this is the 1st time I have seen the #'s on an engine at 9999. And for all you Rio Grande fans out there here is well used unit.
Anyway here are a few ideas in a world that seems to prefer pure unaltered paint schemes. I like pure paint with no one's markings but the company that they belong to, however in this world of fewer railroads and many lease units it is not all uncommon to see units prowling the roads with several different names on the side.

Funny you should mention this Erik.I was thinking about doing a pair of these when I saw some pics while looking for reference photos for my UP Sw1500's.It would take very little effort to produce these with the SP textures I already have.Freddie A. I assume you would be able to model the sanded off name on the sides as well, correct? I would be grateful if you would be able to model an SW1500 similar to this and if it is a little dirty, all the better.Thankyou

Feb-04-02, 11:06 PM (EST) 4. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" Thats ok, I'll figure the weathering part out. Now if someone else out there knows the ins and outs of weathering, they could have a hand on that end. Erik Pierson

Feb-06-02, 09:08 PM (EST) 6. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" I saw one of these units today, a Cotton Belt GP-60. Had the UP shield up front. What killed me was it also had, in very small lettering, the UP web site address under the cab number, www.uprr.com! Boy talk about the evolution of railroading. Feb-06-02, 10:52 PM (EST) 7. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" Curt, I forgot about that detail. You cannot see it in these pics, but it is on most of the engines with the UP numbering.Erik Pierson

Feb-06-02, 11:00 PM (EST) 8. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" I have tried the weathering following these directions about a month ago and they did not turn out to be very realistic. I have been tinkering with PSP and TSM in an effort to make my own engines and cars. So far I have been able to make a couple of tankers fairly well, but I am having problems with the designing or importing the axle sets, so they just sit in a folder on my hard drive.

Feb-07-02, 00:16 AM (EST) 9. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" WOW, you don't see those D&RGW units with the small letters anymore. I personally don't like the "patched" units. UP recently patched the GP60's that are some of the last units in D&RGW paint. they just don't look same. But if you want to make engines look more "real" that would be an intersting paint job.

Feb-07-02, 01:30 PM (EST) 10. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" LAST EDITED ON Feb-07-02 AT 01:31 PM (EST)No. If (expletive deleted) does come out with one, I'm going to be the first to remove the God damned patch and give it its SP number again. Patch jobs must be the worst thing UP is doing to its engines—even full repaints are better. These patches take SP units that already look fairly crappy and then finish the job by pushing the crappiness level to the point of saturation. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-07-02, 01:33 PM (EST) 11. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" By the way, I would actually be glad if someone did a patched SD40M-2. Those units were very un-SP in many ways and actually look better with the yellow patches. Maybe that's a new project for me.... Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Feb-08-02, 00:43 AM (EST) 12. "RE: How about a few SP units w/yellow numbers?" I do not like the patch jobs either, especially since I live in a town that had five railroads when I was born. Now there is basicly one paint scheme here - Armour Yellow & Grey. There is also a little route called the Yolo Shortline, but this one does not really count. I can rember the smoky WP units and then one day they were gone. The Sacramento Northern disappeared before the WP and with the absorbtion of Espee the Central California Traction Company fell under the sole ownership of the UP.
Now back to the patches. In this era to attempt to make things more realistic I think it is an unfortunate necessity.Erik Pierson
