I have a burning question to ask, since I am a re-painter in the flightsim community, How do you convert .ace files into bmps and back? I really want to paint some trains.
Thanks,

Jan-23-02, 10:28 PM (EST) 2. "RE: How do you convert .ace files into bmps and back?" First of all you must have Tgatool2.I installed mine in the "Utils" folder in MSTS.(where makeace application file is located).Once installed...double-click on tgatool2,then click on file at top of box, click "load" which will bring up a browse folder directory. You will then have to browse to the location of your Trainset folder in MSTS,or where ever you have them stored.Once located,double-click that file folder, then go down to file type and browse till you see ace files, click on that and that will bring up a list of all the ace files in that folder.Chose the ace file that you wish to see, then click "open",and there in the window you will see the bmp,or tga file.(tga files have a alpha channel, and bmp don't)If the file has windows,or transparencies in them, then is is to be saved as a tga file.once you figured out the file type, you need to "save" it into another folder(I use a "document folder").the other option is bmp(no alpha),do the same as far as saving it to another folder. You can save it to the "Utils" folder,so that way when your done painting your files, they're their already. When you want to convert to tga&bmp files back to ace files, you can use the tgatool2 to do that, although i still use make ace. What you do is "double-click" on the makeace utility located in the "Utils" folder, then click on the windows "start" button and scroll to "Run".The make ace .app should show up in the command line, and it will probably be highlighted...move your "pointer" to the end of the command line and click,to get rid of the highlight. Now hit the space bar once, then type in the name of the file...example sd402.bmp,(space)sd402.ace then hit the "Enter" key.You will see the black dos window pop-up.The new ace file will show up at the bottom of the Utils folder. Then move that file to where-ever you want.Hope this helps???
