Jan-23-02, 12:56 PM (EST) "Using Railfonts Fonts in MSTS" Basic question: Are the Railroad Roman Fonts available from Railfonts.com compatible for use within MSTS? Their C&O Railroad Roman numbers are a dead on match for my New York, Ontario & Western Number Style. Or... are there other sources out there for True Type RR Roman normal and extended passenger style fonts for use in MSTS?
Thanks for all the help. Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-23-02, 04:06 PM (EST) 1. "RE: Using Railfonts Fonts in MSTS" Joe,Your question can bring two answers. One, if you mean will the font "work" in MSTS, the answer is yes. Once applied to the texture, it becomes part of the texture and is not treated as a "font" by MSTS.Whether a particular font is "appropriate" depends upon the particular railroad and how prototypically accurate you want to be. Just about every railroad uses(ed) a slightly different, or modified lettering style. In many, the differences aren't overly discernable. What is commonly called - "Railroad Roman" is a generic font that approximates the extended (widened) "Roman" style letter widely used by a great many railroads in the early to mid 1900's. The difference, typically, comes in the amount of "extension" applied to the basic "Roman" letter. Some were quite elongated while others, less. Many other lettering styles were used, both extended and non-extended, by other roads. In fact, some of these styles were created specifically for the particular railroad. Union Pacific's lettering style, for example, is a unique style which has come to be known as the "City Of" font (as a result of UP's name train series - "City of"...Los Angeles, ...San Francisco, ... Portland, etc). This is probably more than you wanted to know The bottom line is, study your prototype photos and if it fits . . . use it. -Verne

Jan-23-02, 10:07 PM (EST) 2. "RE: Using Railfonts Fonts in MSTS" Verne.... I can never acquire "too much" information. I am quite familiar with unique RR lettering styles from the HO and N scale model railroading experiences. Is it possible to use PaintShopPro to "elongate" or "extend" the RR Roman Font even more than it is already in the basic font sets? I know the Erie railroad (pre Lackawanna merger) used an exaggerated extension on their passenger equipment that looked really neat. I'm just wondering if there is a method within Paint Shop Pro to modify these fonts and "hyper extend" them?
By the way.... thanks for the great work you guys at Trainartisan are doing. It makes this "hobby" even more exciting and interesting. The variety is potentially infinite.
