Jan-09-02, 07:20 AM (EST) "A 3D attempt at bogies" Hey,I am getting sick of the flat 2D bogies that we are stuck with
on most models.....a few of the experts have made 3D trucks
and they look good but 3D Canvas has trouble with painting
on no square surfaces....so I did this experiment to see how
it would work and look...This is just a bogie truck set with
a standard flat 2D transparency for the outer flat side and
some face surfaces for the top and ends....I can maybe make
the surfaces mate up better and I will add flanges to the wheel
hubs and possibly springs....the amount of polys is 10% of the
normal square attempts for this type of treatment..so it's
not a big hit on frame rates.Message Areas - "A 3D attempt at bogies" – image 1Let me know what you think is it a keeper or junk. Thanks,Controll Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

down but still looking pretty good. It does appear from the
view you posted that the closest wheel has an extreme flat
spot I say keeper ...GaryG

Jan-09-02, 07:34 PM (EST) 9. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" It's better to spend some polygons on 12-sided, or even 16-sided wheels, than on fully 3D trucks. Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 05:01 PM (EST) 5. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" Enocell,If you mean the flanges that stick out over the wheel hubs
or the hubs themselves then yes I will be making them more
3D in later versions...I am trying to use the 2D transparency
and keep it while I build up the parts to give it a more 3D
look so if that becomes a problem then I may switch it to
all 3D parts only...I'll have to see how it goes.Controll Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 05:45 PM (EST) 6. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" HiI use 3D Canvas and with the latest version (5.04) skinning is much more controllable. I did however make the 3D trucks for the Alco S4 and the Sw1500 with an early version of Canvas and they turned out pretty well. The face count IS high however. I have experimented with taking the standard painted flat board and just Stacked about six of them to give the feeling of depth. With some added 3D touches like springs and hubs the effect is pleasing and the face count stays low. Soon I will be releasing an update to the 250 ton Crane set and I have modeled the flatcar trucks 3D and the crane will have the layered trucks

can see how they look...ThanksControll Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-09-02, 10:06 PM (EST) 10. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" This is not work that is ready for prim time. The 3-axle truck is layered with 3D hubs and adapters added for effect. The hubs turn with the axle. I plan to add 3 D springs and I need to do a lot of work on the artwork. The trucks under the flatcar are fully modeled in 3D. These really catch the light well and truly set a car off nicely. I have been making my models with more and more detail expecting to hear complaints at some point about performance. So far no one has complained, so I plan to continue adding detail until I hear some growls of complaint. To me the Trucks, especially on the Locos are a very important part of the experience.I only have a Dell 600 so I am not using a very fast computer by today’s standards. If it will run OK on my machine I feel it will make most people happy.

Jan-09-02, 07:30 PM (EST) 8. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" It's better to spend your polygons on things that are more visible than the trucks. I've made cars with modelled 3D trucks, and they cost far too many polygons which hurts framerates....What I use now is a flat truck (with some "3D" effects in the texture) coupled to 3D bearing boxes that rotate with the wheels. The pictures below show trucks on my 3-car articulated ribside well cars:

Jan-10-02, 01:16 AM (EST) 11. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" Another thing thats not very real apart from the lack of flanges (although some have shown them) is match stick thin axles!
I would think the axles on a 75 ton vehicle would be near 18" Diameter ??
Just pressed the 3 key to look at my train, and saw these power saw blade things about 1/2" wide magically spaced by a 1" axle in 1" thick bogie side frames! But they were tracking the rails very well!
Keep up the good work everyone!

Jan-10-02, 05:04 AM (EST) 12. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" There's no technical problem involved in making wheel flanges, as you can see from the picture below. The problem with the flanges is that they add polygons. Adding flanges to my well cars means a 10% increase in polygons. Which can be roughly translated to being able to run 10% fewer well cars in a consists if you are to keep the same frame rate. Just because of the flanges.Message Areas - "A 3D attempt at bogies" – image 5 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top

Jan-10-02, 06:00 AM (EST) 13. "RE: A 3D attempt at bogies" This is about as much detail as you can have while still having cars that are usable in large consists. The wheels have 12 sides, wheel flanges and contoured axles. The trucks are "semi-3D" with some parts being real 3D and other parts being layered. And the car has details such as raised walkways, stirrups, detailed couplers and brake lines.More details than this and the cars are nice to look at, but you need a 2 GHz multiprocessor computer to move them...Message Areas - "A 3D attempt at bogies" – image 6 Remove | Alert Edit | Reply | Reply With Quote | Top
